Absol. The mention of the pokémon and the disasters they warn of brings back memories of times long passed; of Lacunosa and of a red Absol standing atop of a cavern’s entrance. They had ignored it because they had known the species to inhabit the area. They should have known better than that.

”Yeah… People should listen to Absol more often, it would save them a lot of trouble.” There’s no need to explain why he thinks as much, and for once, Tam is glad. He generally doesn’t care much when it comes to speaking of most things, but Lacunosa is something he’d rather never mention to anyone.

It’s not like they have the time for it, anyway.

They have a job to do, which he’s immediately reminded of by the Froslass that decides this is now a ‘No Smoking’ zone. Honestly? Tam would have been annoyed, but since he can’t see them, for a second there he had forgotten about the amount of ghosts that must be in this manor. He has never liked smoking indoors when there’s pokémon close.

”You've got snow all in your hair."

”Do I?” A gloved hand runs through blond locks, getting rid of some of the snowflakes. But, most of them remain, and in the end, Tam doesn’t really mind them. He had spent just about half of his life with snow in his hair. ”That’s fine, but… be careful.”

He wouldn’t think the reminder to be needed, but then the Froslass immediately attacks the cadet.

Tam has to resist the urge to jump in, becoming all too aware of the way his heart is pounding. Is he worried? Absolutely. Still, he stays by the doorframe, choosing to trust Orion’s judgement when it comes to this. He had meant what he said before: he’s only here as backup, he trusts Orion to deal with this.

It takes a moment, but the Froslass eventually seems to realise that they really don’t mean her any harm at all.

”Looks like she calmed down.”

Be careful.

After the warehouse, Orion understands the sentiment for what it is: worry. So he offers a tight smile, and a promise, "I will be."

He is, in spite of how it looks, knowing to block the defensive attack even before it's fired. Ghosts weren't too different from most Pokémon when it came to feeling threatened. If you cornered a dog, it would bite you. He's careful to step away from the door as he talks.

Eventually, when neither Tam nor Orion move to aggression, the icy spirit giggles and vanishes in a puff of ICY WIND. She reappears next to Orion, who doesn't flinch away in spite of his instinct, holding out a pokeball in the palm of his hand.

"Only temporary." He means it.

The Misdreavus is much easier, given its eagerness to spook them. It targets Tam Fawley in particular, sensing him as an easier target and appearing in front of him at the bottom of the stairs with another high-pitched shriek. Orion takes the opportunity to nail her with a capsule as she's trying to capitalize on her act.

"Well, at least it didn't do it while we were on the stairs." A dead victim wouldn't provide any fear with which to nourish the spirit, after all.

Orion is careful and Tam is thankful for that. It helps him notice things he would have otherwise perhaps seen under a different light. Like the way Orion doesn’t move away from the Froslass even when it suddenly appears next to him. Like how kind he is to her. Like how he clearly cares a lot about the well-being of this pokémon he just met a moment ago. There’s something sweet about it, and when the thought crosses Tam’s mind, he attributes it to Orion being the great ranger he knows him to be.

Once the Froslass is safely (and temporarily) captured, they make their way down the stairs, and of course, as should only be expected, it’s just as Tam is starting to feel less on edge that he’s reminded that there’s a second ghost haunting this manor…

”Do you think the Misdreavus will be easier to f–”

He doesn’t get to finish the sentence because it appears in front of him. Screaming.

Tam takes a step back, and it’s then that his heel hits the staircase right behind him. Ouch.

Thankfully, Orion is quick to act, and within seconds the Misdreavus is also within a pokéball’s confines. Tam sighs, clearly not nearly as amused as his companion.

”Ugh. Let’s just get out of here so I can smoke in peace.”

Still, if ever so faintly, he smirks.

Orion resists the urge to laugh at Tam, even if it is hilarious when the Misdreavus interrupts him mid-sentence. He's teased the captain enough for one night; poor Tam probably needs a long break and a cigarette.

He expresses as much, and Orion nods.

"You did great." They step outside into the warm Hoenn air, and Orion's grateful for it as the gooseflesh on his arms finally recedes. "A lot of the time when I'm partnered up for stuff like this, they end up staying outside for half the mission."

A lot of people were easily spooked. He hadn't expected Tam to be one of those people, yet the fact that the captain had braved that anxiety to finish the job was admirable. It was also endearing as hell, but Orion keeps that to himself.

"You go ahead and smoke," he invites. "I'll update dispatch."

Haunt complete.
