“Thank god,” Kepler said, both in real relief and for the irony of it all, "for a second there I thought I was going to have to kill you.”

It’s a joke. He really couldn’t. Probably couldn’t have before Mars was all funky and super-powered but definitely couldn’t now.

His two little nightmares spin an Exeggutor around in circles until its dizzy and falling over. then they tug at its palm fronds. kepler throws a pokeball to save it further suffering.

“i don’t do any of that shit,” kepler said, a wry, forceful sort of unimpressed. “i have hashimoto’s and cardiomyopathy.” he exhaled a cloud of smoke and tapped the cigarette between his fingers to ash it in the air. "it isn’t a competition. but i’m the kind of fucked up that doesn’t come with supernatural perks.”

his gaze flashes up to mars’ face: petulant, bratty. “is that a rhetorical question?” he asked with a snort.

after a beat of silence, he added, "i think it’s just hoenn that does it, mostly.”

The joke gets a chuckle out of him, yet at that moment, he can’t help but wonder if kepler brueshaber has actually ever killed. He doesn’t seem like the type, and some Team Rocket members have never had to do such things… Not yet, at least. Eventually, this life of their catches up with all of them. It can’t be avoided.

Kepler arched an eyebrow, deciding it was time to move on from self-pity and go back to what he did best, which was being a fucking genius.

“Could you use all your Unown?” he asked, cocking his head and looking up at Mars. “There were a lot of them there, right? And that’s where they, like, reprogrammed you, or whatever. Maybe they could get you back in?”

And I could hitch a ride and get some of that sweet, sweet data. Though he didn’t know what he’d fucking do with it. The Naganadel stuff… that was easy. Building weaponry based on the Ultra Beast, determining what made it so powerful… that was all quantifiable.

But a world made out of pure data? What on earth would he do with that?

Objectively, Kepler isn’t wrong. It should be simple enough, right? Just ask the Unown to make a portal. He has done so before, so why not now? That’s a bit more complicated…

Some had worked, some had not, and some had almost gotten him killed. Granted, the latter had been Palkia’s fault, but Mars isn’t fully aware of that at this point in time. He just has suspicions.

As he considers it, he watches the Unown-X, which seems all too interested in a cluster of eggs. An Exeggcute, as it soon learns. The wild pokémon attempts to CONFUSE the Unown, and of course, this doesn’t sit well with Xero at all.

HIDDEN POWER soon interrupts their conversation. Mars pays it little mind, though.

Of course it wouldn’t be as easy as just making a portal. That was like saying interdimensional travel was as simple as opening a door.

Kepler was about to point this out when a Pokemon that should not be in Hoenn made an appearance, marigold-shaped and pink and blue and so fucking weird that Phobos and Deimos hounded it from the moment it showed. They spun around it in increasingly tighter circles, hoping to get it to drop its ball so they could steal it, to no avail. Eventually, Kepler got dizzy watching them, so he threw a Pokeball to end their fun.

“Does a Bewear shit in the woods? Of course I’d want to go.”

When the Rabsca appears, he too can’t help but watch. It’s one of the only Psychic type pokémon missing in Mars’ own collection, but not only that, it’s a Paldean pokémon, and it sure as hell shouldn’t be in Hoenn.

“Hope is a logical fallacy,” Kepler says, unhelpfully.

He zooms in on the little squid and has flashbacks to Mars’ attacking his fucking face. Almost as though they’re going off of his vitriol, Phobos and Deimos zoom in on the cephalopod, terrorizing it with a smattering of ghost-type attacks and leaving it dazed and confused as Kepler throws a Pokeball.

“How do we start? Go back out to the ocean? Make a whirlpool? Maybe that can conjure up the doorway again.”

The word conjure comes out as a half-snorted laugh, a hint of wry humor in the otherwise insistent nature.
