THE NIGHTMARE BEGINS

With your waiver signed and your nerves steeled, you enter the looming mansion. You find yourself within a bare lobby, another GMH attendant standing in front of four distinct doors. After a moment of waiting, you are directed toward a door with a red handprint smeared across its surface. The attendant opens the door, and once you enter the door will close and lock behind you.[break][break]

You find yourself in a mundane hallway, unusually well-lit for what is supposed to be a haunted house. You begin your journey down the hall, slowly making your way to the red door that waits for you at its end. Unassuming mementos hang from the beige walls: a family portrait, a ticking clock, even some soothing paintings. Finally, you reach the door and open it without hesitation. However, on the other side of the door is the very same hallway—only longer and with more doors. These doors lead into the very same hallway, over and over again in an endless loop. As you keep moving forward, minor changes in the hallway begin to add up. The beige wallpaper begins to rot, the family portraits grow demented and violent, the paintings become frantic and grotesque. More and more doors get added to the hallway; sounds can be heard behind nearly every one yet they all lead into the same hallway. Every loop twists the hallway further, yet you have no choice but to move forward. There has to be an end—you just need to keep moving.

The actual game occurs at the end of your post. Here is an overview of the rules:

Roll three times. At least one of your rolls must meet the win condition of this thread. This Thread’s Win Condition: At least one rolled number must be Even.
Every player starts with 50 resolve. Failure to meet the win condition on any of your rolls will cost the player 10 resolve. Reaching 0 resolve will eliminate that player from the game. Be sure to keep track of your resolve somewhere within your post.
Continue taking turns posting until there is only one player left standing. Every eight posts I will interject with an event that may modify the game, so stay vigilant.

So this is supposed to be a haunted house, right? Johanna thought as she walked through the first hallway. The place was unusually well-lit for such a place. The smell was rather decent as well, and the honestly couldn’t hear any screams or some such as she had expected.

She was mildly confused about this as her memory returned to the waiver she had signed. Why would they have us sign something like that if it was THIS mild? She continued into the next Hallways. She looked around. Nothing unusual to see. A few mementos, some pictures, just a copy of the other hallway, right?

She moved on. The same hallway. This was getting annoying. She had signed up to be scared, and this was disappointing. Wait, was there a door there before? She halted in front of a new door that had appeared in the hallway. She knew the answer was no. She finally looked at the pictures and mementos that she had been ignoring in favor of growing frustrations. All the things were warped with depictions of various terror-inducing imagery of violence and gore.

Tch, disgusting.

Johanna moved through what she assumed would be the correct door. Another hallway yet again, but now with another door. Sounds of scratching, and quiet wailing came from each separate door. Johanna gulped. She tried to think of this as all silly games, reminding herself that this was a horror house. But something wasn’t adding up. She had been going in a straight line all this time. How many hallways had she gone through in that time? And it hadn’t been small ones either.

Something was off, the sheer size of the house shouldn’t accommodate this many hallways. She walked through the next hallway, but instead of going in a straight line, she took the door to the left. For a brief moment she had expected something different, maybe a jump scare.

But no… Just another hallway.

“What have I gotten myself into…”

“Well this is…quaint,” Fern murmurs in an aside to jayden cross as they’re led through the initial door to a brightly lit hallway. It’s certainly not what they anticipated when signing up to wander through a supposed house of horrors. Even more so when the door they came through had a big ol’ bloody handprint slapped across it.[break][break]

This is like any other hallway–perfectly normal, mundane. Nothing amiss. The door at the end must lead to something darker. They’re sure of it. And well, it better because they came into this expecting to be startled, and if that wasn’t the result, badgering Jayden into coming along with them will have fallen flat entirely.[break][break]

Only the next door yields…another hallway.[break][break]

The changes are imperceptible at first, and it makes Fern a bit cross that they can’t just be done with hallways already. And then the doors begin to appear. Little offshoots. He tries one, and it’s locked. In the next hall, he tries another. Locked. By the time he tries a third, the air within the halls (hall, singular?) has grown heavy with the permeation of rot. Mildew and wet, worn wood. Water stains sink from the ceiling down the walls, and the once pretty-patterned paper curls in different places.[break][break]

There’s the unnerving crawl under their skin–the one they were expecting from the jump. Set to the dissonance of out of tune squalls of string instruments and wailing behind thin wooden doors. At one point, something thumps hard against the wall directly beside Fern as he passes and he jumps before he laughs at himself, low and thin.[break][break]

“Here goes,” they mutter with a scoff of laughter, expecting more of the same. At first, it doesn’t turn. Bending, they lower to peer through the keyhole because they swear in the gloom of the dimming overhead lights, there’s a light shining through under the crack. Abruptly, the light through the hole is shadowed–replaced by a watery, blinking blue eye, the sclera gone yellow and bloodshot.[break][break]

It’s enough to make them stumble back, nearly falling flat before they catch themself with another laugh. Maybe they should leave it alone and keep going. Catch up with Jayden and the others stuck wandering down the looping halls. But it’s just a silly trick so…they try it again.[break][break]

The grimy antique knob rattles…and then gives. The door swings open with a long groan on creaky hinges.[break][break]

Inside is nothing. Nothing at all. Emboldened, Fern steps inside for a better look, not noticing the door easing shut behind them. There’s no decor, no furniture, no windows. Just corner to corner, moldering shag carpet and warped wood panel walls. They stand there, and there’s another twinge of disappointment before they glance back and recall that they’re alone in here.[break][break]

Fern moves and– bumps into the wall? Frowning, they look around and is the room getting smaller? The room is getting smaller. No thanks. The feeling of space closing in around them trips their flight instinct and they return to the door, only to pause again, hand holding the knob in place when it rattles under their touch. From the outside, a lighthearted murmur accompanies it. A shadow dances in the light coming through and they think maybe it’s someone pulling a fast one on them. Unease settles like a stone in their stomach as they repeat their earlier movement and peer through the keyhole.[break][break]

That’s definitely his eye staring back at him. This time Fern does topple back, just to spring up and grab at the handle. How long has he been in here? Enough to look haggard? He was going to get out there and there was going to be no one–just him, and then he’d be alone as he’d been in this room and–[break][break]

Bursting through the door yielded no change. A rush up the same hall resulted in another hall. But gratefully, the return of another, familiar presence. Only then could they laugh at themselves again, but it was still a bit more wary than before.

Creepy. Atmospherically anyway. He's not too affected by gore and viscera. Once you see what your own insides look like up close, depictions like the ones in the strange paintings weren't enough to move you. Teal eyes trail past photos and the like. While he knew this was a haunted house, there's still the aspect of surprise. He didn't like jump scares. The way they activated his fight or flight. Especially when, more often than not, he chose fight. [break][break]

But CALLISTA MOON has mentioned she'd like to try this and he had wanted to spend time with her. Unfortunately it seemed they weren't in the same group. He sees blue hair, but its not the right share. Posture isn't right either. Still he offered a slow greeting so as to not catch her by surprise and get hit by Johanna Joy 's own fight or flight instinct. "Hello." He stayed still, waving if she looked at him. [break][break]

Music, strange notes flying off easily for man old record player made his ears perk and he's curious enough to turn to lean for a door. He's just about to shoot off when another person bursts back into the hallway. Paxton tensed, eyes wide for a moment before he watched that same door slam shut on itself. Gods. How complex was this place? [break][break]

His eyes lay on semi familiar blue ones and he paused to think before his eyes narrowed. The memory is recalled. He knows him only as an alias with a fake ID but he remembered the face well enough. And the irritating way they talked. Paxton doesn't greet them like he does the girl, practically turning his nose at fern delaney and well enough to carry on like he doesn't know them. And then he sees their companion. Teal meets purple and- aw fuck. It's jayden cross from the swim suit contest. He blinked slowly offering a quick, "Hey." and a half shrug before turning away. He didn't make it a habit of talking with his ex hook ups. Messy. [break][break]

how did he get persuaded into this activity? as with most anything that didn't have to do with his immediate work or corporate responsibilities, it was the fault of a third party.

[break][break] fern delaney could convince him of anything after all.

[break][break] or so it seemed.

[break][break] "quaint is one way to put it," he remarks, as they walk through the mansion. as each hallway leads deeper into darkness, a mixture of twists and turns that are to make any sane person have their gut churn, jayden's gaze seems almost painfully placid. what someone may not immediately notice, however, is the curious tint to his eyes as he views the various picture frames and momentos on the doors, the way his gaze swivels ever so slightly at the creak of sounds echoing in the distance.

[break][break] is he looking for ghosts, perhaps?

[break][break] either way, he lets his companion lead the way — it was fern's idea that they go on this adventure together, after all - and makes no noises as each new door leads to yet another door. it seems nearly hopeless, and jayden almost seems like he is about to offer an alternative, when fern jolts and nearly bumps into him. hands go up to catch the other, ghosting around his shoulders, when the familiar laughter of theirs settles something deep in his chest that he hadn't even known was there. (strange.. had he been worried?)

as he's contemplating this own change in his own mental state, there is the presence of another. jayden blinks for a moment, filled with a sense of deja vu, although he is not quite sure why. this other person seems familiar and yet, he cannot place him.

either way, he drops his hands from fern delaney 's shoulders and give a nod. "hey."

[break][break] a witch's cackle sounds in the distance, sending a shiver down his own spine. not even jayden was immune to the horrors of a haunted house.

Johanna kept moving on. Her eyes searched each room for the small differences just to confirm that she had indeed changed rooms. Though the grotesqueness of the mementos grew it didn’t affect her as much as the increasing feeling of isolation.

What if this isn’t a trick?

The thought though tiny and quiet suddenly sent a shiver down her spine. No, she couldn’t be. And as she walked past a door she heard the cackling of a witch. She grabbed the door and slammed it open ready to fight off anything in there. But all she saw was yet another hallway.

Johanna took a deep breath, the first she had taken since she grabbed the door.

“Pull yourself together Johanna, this is just a Haunted House nothing more.” She murmured to herself as she continued onward. She walked past a door, from which she was sure she heard the sound of two men. Just another trick, keep moving. There’s nothing there, just like with all the other doors.

And so Johanna pressed onward. Feeling ever more alone with each hallway she passed.

Tension makes their posture rigid and sharp, nerves crawling under their skin as their heart struggles to slow back down to a normal pace again after the startle they've had. Jumpy as they are, Fern's shoulders hike up when hands settle on their shoulders as they stumble back - nearly in time with a howling peal of laughter that rolls from a room to their left. "Oh, sorry," they mutter before the amused laughter at themself starts. One hand lifts to settle atop one of jayden cross 's as they glance back to offer a weak smile. They're not scared, no way...but the added security of their companion's presence is a comfort.[break][break]

A flash of movement catches Fern's eye, though, and they notice the additional presence coming up from behind. Or was he ahead at some point? Like the blue-haired woman not too far out of sight as well? He can't say he's sure anymore. The halls keep on coming, and though they progressively deteriorate, it can no longer be determined if the hall is the original, or just stretching longer and longer and longer and longer and--[break][break]

Straightening his posture, Fern internally peps himself and pats at his face sternly to regather his resolve. The man addresses Jayden, but ignores him, which is...funny. But also fine by Fern. He loses track of the girl with blue hair (Johanna Joy ) but he's sure they'll catch up with her. Probably. He doesn't expect much past that with jayden cross and he doesn't press it. They seem to know fern delaney and that's enough of a relief for him. Distractions are good. Especially when trying to navigate through a haunted house. [break][break]

"I wonder what the pattern here is." he said, not addressing anyone in specific as he continued trying and opening doors. Maybe it was like a maze? Maybe that was the trick. he's still getting used to their presence, and the spark of a feeling in his chest when their fingers brush against his. but in the presence of company, jayden is more than able to hide it.

[break][break] sure enough, there isn't much else to do but go forward so jayden alongside fern delaney and paxton concordas makes his way through the spinning corridors. a cackle whistles through the air, this time much more high-pitched and echoey, one that is nearly enough to make him stop in his steps. this all has to be an illusion... doesn't it?

[break][break] he jerks when fingers slide along the cuff of his shirt, only to realize that it's fern. he blinks softly, before he slides his hands in theirs. affectionate. silent.

[break][break] the admin glances sideways at paxton concordas, however, as his fingers slide along the wall. "careful," he warns. you never knew what could pop up along the wall.

[break][break] as they continue forth along the dark corridor, a howl joins the mixture of uncanny whistles and hushes murmurs. even as jayden strains to hear it, he can't make out the sound — whether they're words or illusions, he has no idea. he takes a breath, and it's only then that he realizes that he's been holding it.

Passage after passage. Door after door. The continued sensation of isolation was wearing down upon her mental strength. But she was sure to run into someone right? There were other people in here. She had seen them at the beginning. They had taken different paths, but they were here. Surely this Haunted House was not so large that they could simply up and disappear.

A brief lapse of judgment made her open a door before checking for any sounds. Her eyes shot wide as a tall ghoulish woman stood at the far exit. Slowly Johanna backed out and closed the door. And all was well. Thinking it was just another part of the scenery.

But then she heard the slamming against the door. The rustling of the doorknob as the ghoulish woman tried to open the door.

Johanna jumped backward in fear. “NO NO NO NO NONO NO NO.” She cried out in fear as she hurried through another door. But she heard the Ghoulish woman behind her follow.

And so the hunt was on.

The longer they wander the halls, the more uneasy Fern grows. When his fingers ball into shirt fabric and Jayden startles, he’s quick to mouth a silent sorry at him with apologetic eyes. But then their hands link and a hum of relief follows. It’s not so bad–until it’s bad.[break][break]

The shrill, wooden creek of a door easing open stops him in his tracks. His glance shifts sideways to jayden cross , and then past him toward where paxton concordas stands. It seems they’ve lost the blue-haired woman (Johanna Joy .) The door at the far end of the hall is the culprit–swing wide slowly as the dimmed lights overhead flicker. His hand curled in Jayden’s squeezes unconsciously.[break][break]

It’s a tall, unearthly, banshee-looking woman who emerges. All dark-haired tangles and curling claws. Fern feels his stomach drop, and that chilled prickle of dread rush through him in the beat of silence that follows before her yawning, wide mouth opens to howl.[break][break]

In the wake of the ghoul woman’s shrieking, Fern shakes his head decidedly. “Mmmm nah. Nope,” is all he says, flat and deadpan before whirling around on his heels to dart away. His hand tugs at his companion’s, in a bid to get him to run without letting go. If they break apart, though, there’s no telling if they’ll manage to stick together. He figures that Paxton is keeping up, if he’s not already sprinted off– beat cops can run fast, right? Probably, surely.[break][break]

A glance back over his shoulders reveals the alarming speed of the woman, arms outstretched despite her stilted, jerky movement. It almost has the effect of a bunch of photograph stills all snapshot and crammed together in a loop. But he’s not going to take the time and evaluate it further as his heartbeat thumps in his ears, and he tries to stay just out of reach with the more ground she gains.

Even Paxton, a more controlled and stoic presence than most, cannot avoid the sudden jolt in his heart and the cut off "SHIT-" that erupts form him as the ghoulish woman drops into view and immediately began running after them. He backpedaled. HARD. The maze trick is forgotten, as he managed to gesture for jayden cross and fern delaney to turn back around. [break][break]

"Go,go,go,go!" he said trying not to shove them as he ran away, yanking and testing doors as he did. Another way, another exit. Gotta scramble and get away.

static tingles where their palms link up and it's a mild comfort in the dark hallway. jayden doesn't consider himself a fearful person — after all, he's had enough trauma in his life to last a lifetime, and then some. but there is just something about the eerie quiet of the house that sets him on edge — like a warning — and he's right.

[break][break] the door swings wide open and a horrifying woman appears at the center of it. he can almost see the similarities with his own mother, the way that she would look whenever alexei disappointed her.

[break][break] he doesn't need fern delaney's uncomfortable squeeze to alert him — his body is already tense.

[break][break] "we have to go," he mutters in a hurry, just as his two companions seem to think the same. they tear through the hallway with the ease of individuals trying to spare their own life. it's just an illusion, he reminds himself, logically, even as he tears down the path.
