After all, Gavin had no chance of being put into that predicament in the first place.[break][break] There was honor here in a training exercise, so long as they colored within the lines Gavin had assigned for them. But that didn't mean Gavin couldn't change the rules whenever he damned pleased. Honestly, there were times where Isaac considered breaking the rules of the duel to try and even the odds. However, he knew that anything he could come up with, Gavin could answer five times harder. The rules were just as much a mercy as they were a restriction.[break][break] Shadows were hyperaggressive, extra powerful, and completely incapable of bonding with humans. There was one exception, and Isaac was looking right at him. Perhaps some members of the League saw this as an example of the worst adhering to the worst. But Isaac saw someone who had challenged Walsh just to keep Pacifildog's head above water. He saw someone who swallowed his pride and accepted Dahlia's propaganda-slathered aide for Sootopolis' sake. And now he saw someone who could bond with the unbondable.[break][break] "How do you do it?" Isaac asked. Briefly, he wondered how much of a difference Gavin could make if he hadn't fallen into this abyss.[break][break] Clearly, the answer was "not easily." The scars etched across Gavin's chest were enough to leave Isaac shuddering. The fact that he could comment on the Sandslash's viciousness while scritching under its chin like a beloved family pet sure was a contrast. Would he be able to be so forgiving if he had gotten scarred for life like that?[break][break] "You and me both, man," Isaac said, offering a fistbump Ashley's way.
