Born the second child of a widowed father, boys River and Lake were all their father had left of his wife. Money was tight for them, forcing their father to fall into the grip of Team Rocket for money. Uprooted from Konikoni City in Alola to Lavender City in Kanto early on into the recruitment, River spent most of his childhood in Kanto playing with his older brother and their two rockruff's. Lake was in to battling and getting stronger, but River was timid and shy, choosing to play with his pokemon rather than train it. When River was 15 and Lake 18, their father died in an accident on a mission. Lake was quick to recruit at their fathers death, eager to follow in his footsteps, leaving River behind. After having just lost his father, River felt as though he'd lost Lake as well. Depressed and now alone, River dwelled. It was when Kanto was overtaken by Team Rocket that he heard the news of Lake's death. Defeated, River moved to Hoenn in an attempt to start new. Unfortunately with Team Rocket being the only thing he knew, he latched on to what he was familiar with and joined the team, desperate for some kind of family.

River is essentially an overgrown, moody teenager. Although he's reached his mid-twenties, that doesn't stop him from brooding about his losses in life and simple day to day things. He finds it incredibly difficult to connect with anyone since the loss of his brother and often avoids social situations. When forced in to one, River is incredibly unpleasant to deal with. Reclunctant but in desperate need of structure and money, River could turn only towards Team Rocket. Despite his childhood fear of battling and injuring Pokemon, river has grown in many ways and now sees battling as a way of survival and money. He deeply cares for his own pokemon, and for them and himself, he'll do whatever necessary to take care of and protect them. Unfortunately, that includes stealing others pokemon for money. A stranger in a sea of Rocket members, River's made little effort to make himself known. Trying to put all of his effort into something to block out the pain unfortunately hardly works when what you're working for is the reason for the pain. With Team Rocket being the only semblance of a family he's got, even he's struggling to keep from pushing them away.
