Shalin's head was buried in the TYPE: FULL MANUAL as she sat on a bench just inside the New Mauville entrance. She was deep in thought. She knew it was necessary to go through with the stem cell extraction to create Type: Null, as it would put her on as even footing as possible with Rocket's Avatars. Squeals, the saddled Raticate next to her, gently rubbed her stubby forward paws against her trainer in an attempt to cheer her up.

Nothing was bringing Pharika back now.

Corona, Clapper, and Grimmie, despite the Walrein being out of water, all kept Shalin company. They were Pokémon the scientist would have been familiar with, from either extracting their cells directly, or checking the misting storage cube her team's extracted stem cells were in. She had chosen to meet JAMES BAKER here due to its secluded location and her need for an electric Pokmon, as she did not have one. Shalin also wanted to keep the meeting in a more secluded location. If a League official heard about the details of how Pharika passed, then that could lead to being wrapped in the penal system for a while. She had enough of a hard time dealing with the loss as it was.

these past few weeks have not been the easiest for james. as someone who takes pride in knowledge and discovery, he knows that sometimes those things come at great costs.[break][break]

the reality of having to put Shalin Nariya's pokemon through all that doesn't sit well with him but he sees no other choice. to further investigate ANOMALIES and to connect all the dots, this is something he has to do.[break][break]

Shalin's eyes shifted to ensure no one was around before answering the scientist's question. "Still not great," she answered, a tear sliding down the girl's cheek. "Pharika is... a hard loss. I have a lot of memories with her." She shared the story of how she went on a big smission to repel a Dynamax Huntail from the Ever Grande area, protecting an underwater dig team from its wrath by being on the front lines on her Dragalge steed. All she had to remember Pharika with was her saddle and bridle, which she had with her.

"She was one of the strongest aquatic Pokémon I had. And now she's gone. Yet...we're a little less than a third of the way done with gathering stem cells for the synthesis." She paused to ask an important question. "How strong is Type: Null? Ever since Pharika's passing, and after thinking about how helpless I was at Littleroot, where gods clashed against one another and I felt like I didn't make a difference..." She did, though. She repelled Elisabeth Fiorelli that day. And she would happily repeat that outcome if they met again. "Keldeo... if you're out there... I need you."

So Type: Null were created specifically to combat Ultra Beasts, which were populating inside the rifts. This was a giant problem waiting to happen. If one of those gave way... she didn't want to think about it. Hoenn already had enough problems dealing with Team Rocket. The region didn't need another big, world ending problem. Meteno, though it was months ago, felt like yesterday.

"If they can handle Ultra Beasts, then they're stronger than ordinary Pokémon. No matter the cost." Grimmie stepped forward and gently nuzzled Shalin, sensing the girl was about to start crying again. "It pains me to go through with this. But it has to be done. Have you worked with anyone else trying to create a Type: Null? If so, is it always this difficult? With this much loss of life and pain?"

Shalin frowned; it seemed the cost of synthesizing Type: Null was unavoidable. She moaned at the idea of having to catch Pokémon only to harvest their stem cells, such as the Shieldon before her. She didn't want to do it, but she had little choice. Reluctantly, she sent out her Charizard, Corona, the scientist likely able to notice a black spot on the dragon's arm near where the stem cell extraction had taken place.

ANCIENT POWER and INFERNO crossed one another, both Pokémon falling to each others' attacks. Her frown growing, she grasped Poké Balls in both hands: the Charizard's in her left, which she used to recall her fallen partner, and an empty one in her right, which had the Shieldon's name on it.

"So I'll have to go through this no matter what..." Shalin trailed off. "So what makes Type: Null special, other than just being rare?"

"So like Porygon?" Shalin asked, the only other synthetic Pokémon she knew about. It seemed that much about the species was shrouded in mystery. She wanted to find out for herself, and she wasn't sure the price was worth it. She didn't have a choice in the matter, though. If she wanted to be a meaningful combatant next time she was conscripted into battle, she needed a potent weapon like Type: Null. Something that could stand up to the terrifying might of an Avatar. While she had not been on the receiving end of one before, she had seen the raw might MATIAS SILPH and Groudon had wielded. As things stood now, if she found herself on the receiving end of one, it would be the end of Hoenn's Wildest Rider.

"...Meaning they are unlikely to bond with a trainer over anything but battle," Shalin sighed, "right?" After all, if it was solely designed to combat Ultra Beasts, it wouldn't think like other Pokémon, would it? Would it even have a heart to open up to?
