Nomi deposited the small, spherical object onto the lab table with reverent care, then stepped back so that her companions could observe it.[break][break]
It never ceased to amaze her, how harmless and insignificant the METENO DEOXYS CORE seemed, based on its rather mundane appearance. But she knew very well how much power the little metallic sphere held. She could picture the Meteno Deoxys clearly, its violent opposition to all who had made their way to its domain a memory she would not soon forget. Nomi desperately wished to know what Killian Decker had experienced when his Deoxys and the other Deoxys had communicated. There were rumors that his Deoxys was now missing in action, somehow separated from him. Had it gone looking for its...sibling?[break][break]
It was worrisome. Deoxys had been an asset to Rocket.[break][break]
"I admit, extraterrestrial entities are beyond even my purview as a scientist," Nomi murmured, feeling a mix of apprehension and excitement at the prospect of uncovering whatever secrets the core held. "But I suppose we could begin to test it the way we might the Tera crystals, which also technically come from space...weight, chemical makeup, energy readings, reactivity..." She looked to Cillian Quinn in particular, given his experience in scientific research.[break][break]
Why she had wanted Zev Harcourt here, she could not say exactly. Something felt right about it, like his perspective would be useful. He wasn't a scientist, but he was a member of SPECTRA. If something dangerous manifested during their studies, he would be more than capable of handling it. As would Valerian, who lay by the laboratory door, one eye cracked open, vigilant.

Cillian was not a Rocket scientist in any official capacity, yet the natural curiousity borne of his background and education has never left him. He'll insert himself wherever he's welcome in their labs, and this is no different.[break][break]

He speaks up in reply to Naomi Sato, his deep voice coloured once more with its native accent.[break][break]

Further binding him in her mind, no doubt, to Lulu Flint.[break][break]

Speaking of his sister...[break][break]

"We might consult with Flint, when she's not so busy." His sister had become more reclusive of late. He worries for her, but keeps that to himself. "She assisted in the original search for Deoxys."[break][break]

He means, of course, the one that had previously inhabited Killian Decker. He wonders where it is now.[break][break]

"Perhaps we could utilize the Unown to find out more." He knew Nomi had taken an interest in the alphabetic anomalies, especially in the absence of the underboss who'd once controlled them. "As to testing... you know, in M.A.G.M.A, we tested for Pokerus. We ought to do the same, here. It may help us foster an understanding of where it might've come from."[break][break]

He keeps his distance from it despite his curiosity, leaving the muscle to their resident Beast. His arm is still bandaged after the battle in the Deep Sea, and he'd be of little use in a scuffle.

The odd person out of their little gathering, Zev nevertheless stood closest to the Deoxys core that Team Rocket had obtained from the meteoroid. He had never seen it before and knew little of the powers Killian Decker had possessed, but neither fact stopped him.[break][break]

In fact, he felt no awe, caution, or apprehension as he peered at the orb. He'd know how to react once their testing revealed the core's nature and capabilities.[break][break]

"What do we know of it already?" he asked, hoping for answers that might lead to an understanding of it as a weapon. "How did it react on METENO to attacks or damage — do you remember?" This question was directed toward Naomi Sato specifically.[break][break]

Zev's Gengar hovered nearby, ready to defend the humans in the laboratory.

Nomi thought back to her experience on the surface of Meteno. She had witnessed Killian Decker and his Deoxys attempt to communicate with the Meteno-Deoxys, but to no avail. The strange alien creature had been so angry, so violently opposed to the foreign presence of humanity intruding upon its home.[break][break]
"The Meteno-Deoxys did not seem lucid," Nomi answered finally, expression thoughtful. "It mindlessly attacked everything around it - League, Rocket, even its own kin."[break][break]
She considered the nature of its attacks. Undirected, mindless, drone-like, constant. It had hardly seemed to care about calculating threat levels, assessing risks. It just wanted to destroy. Or had been directed to by some greater power.[break][break]
"It was capable of Terastallization," Nomi suddenly remembered. And then her eyes widened, another memory surfacing. "Holo was shocked."[break][break]
"What?! No. That shouldn't be here...it shouldn't be able to do that!" Nomi remembered the way the DRK Triad member had yelled in surprise as if it were yesterday.[break][break]
"It was strong in ways not even the DRK Triad had seen before," the head scientist concluded. "In fact, they hadn't expected it to appear at all. It used a powerful beam of meteoric energy to attack, like a super-charged Tera Blast."

"Doubtful that it's from our world, then, if it could terastallize." Unfortunately, that didn't narrow it down by much. How many other universes were out there? Infinite?

So the other Deoxys had been outside of anyone's control — even Killian Decker's, even the DRK Triad's. Zev crossed his arms as he contemplated the ramifications. But they could speculate all they wanted and still not reach any answers.[break][break]

"Then let's begin the test," he suggested. He assumed, of course, that either Nomi or Cillian would instruct him on his role in the proceedings, as he had no clue.[break][break]

For the moment, Zev stepped back to allow the scientist to work. His Gengar floated next to him, ready to defend or attack as needed.

The subject of testing reminded Nomi that Cillian Quinn had made two suggestions she had meant to circle back to. The vivid memories of what had happened on Meteno had momentarily distracted her.[break][break]
"The Unown might be able to help," she agreed, considering the suggestion. "If there are any electro-magnetic radio waves coming from the core, the Unown will be able to communicate with it." Assuming it was even something that could be communicated with, of course.[break][break]
Nomi took out a Pokeball and released her UNOWN-K. It stared at Cillian and Zev with its wide, unblinking singular eye. After a moment, it turned away from them and slowly drifted down to the core, needing no direction from Nomi to begin to assess the small sphere. While she waited to see if anything significant would happen, she glanced at Cillian.[break][break]
"Testing for Pokerus is an interesting suggestion," she said to him. "Such a thing would normally suggest the DRK Triad's tampering, but if they did not know the Meteno-Deoxys existed...then how could they have infected its core?" She trailed off, lost in thought. "Unless Pokerus does not originate with them, but perhaps elsewhere...could it be from space, just like Deoxys?"[break][break]
All of a sudden, the Unown-K began to bob up and down, as if excited. Nomi's attention was drawn back to it like a magnet. "What is it?" She asked. How curious. Was it...actually communicating with the core?

Previously under the impression that it was only the terastallization that had surprised them, Cillian is further intrigued by this apparent gap in the Triad's knowledge.[break][break]

As the group converse, Cillian lets out his Unown-A so that it might assist its kin in establishing a line of communication with the core. Dubbed 'Albedo' for the word it was most drawn to, the hovering letter was the only remnant of Cillian's small collection — the rest, he'd given to Mars.[break][break]

"Xerneas has Pokerus as well. I don't know if that was the Triad's doing. But it was certainly from another world."[break][break]

He's drawn from his thoughts, eyes widening with uncontained excitement as Nomi's Unown reacts.

While Cillian and Nomi talked about scientific things outside of Zev's knowledge, he merely stood with arms crossed, staring at the Deoxys core. A simple orb, it seemed totally innocuous. He couldn't see at all why Nomi's Unown-K had started bouncing.[break][break]

Zev's Gengar, however, thought it was wildly entertaining. Smoke floated over to the two Unown. He looked at them both, then started bouncing up and down himself.[break][break]

"Get a grip," Zev hissed at the Gengar.[break][break]

But Smoke only giggled, pointing emphatically at the Unown and the Deoxys core.

THE TWO UNOWN attempt to communicate with the PARTIALLY FROZEN DEOXYS CORE. The NEVERMELTICE/GLACIATE ICE that had prevented its previous owner from accessing it in full is a frustrating substance. It does not chip. It does not melt. It just obstructs and chills and taunts.

Through the ice, the Unown pick up a repeating psychic frequency... little blips so slow:

There is a Deoxys present within this core indeed.

The Unown were definitely reacting to something. Zev's Gengar seemed to be playing along in jest, but could he also sense something about the core?[break][break]
Nomi approached the Unown, then reached down and touched the core with a careful fingertip. It was cold. Beyond cold. Colder than she remembered it being, as if something about it had...activated. A protective measure? She frowned, removing her finger. The sensation reminded her of the way it had felt traversing through the Silent Icelands: a frigidness that went beyond temperature.[break][break]
"Is it alive?" Nomi asked the Unown, deeply curious. They bobbed up and down as if to indicate the affirmative, singular eyes rapidly moving from the core to Nomi then back to the core again. She wasn't entirely sure how she knew it - some sort of intuitive understanding of the strange symbol Pokemon she'd been studying nonstop for months now - but she was suddenly absolutely certain they had successfully communicated with the core.[break][break]
"There is something in there," she concluded, looking to Cillian. "I think...I think it's the Meteno Deoxys."
