CONTRARY TO ITS NAME, THE MAJORITY OF THE ULTRA DEEP SEA IS A VAST CAVE-LIKE WORLD. Shafts of light from an unknown source barely penetrate the dark, causing colorful diamond-like rocks to glisten against humid walls. The dim lighting makes the place seem like you're thousands of leagues under the sea... Eerily, an unceasing pulse can be heard like a heart beat that rumbles throughout the realm.[break][break]

Oddly enough, one is able to "swim" through this realm like Water-type Pokemon floating in air.[break][break]

One may stumble upon deep, cold pools of dark water and alien seaweed as they scout out the realm. Segments of this place open up into an astral sea, where islands of mysterious stone are suspended mid-air.

Nenet had a plan this time - at least a marginal one. First, avoiding the rift seemed a necessity for everyone's sanity, so the pair took off in the opposite direction. Second, she brought a camcorder and camera for comparing against her memory. Finally, her Hatterene shuffled alongside the pair, already released in case of impending danger.

One could never be too careful.

A shape quickly took place, a recess in the seabed-like cave where a ship lay, The Quaestor Lucis emblazoned on its side. "Have you ever seen anything like this," Nenet asks, eyes wide with curiosity at the sight of the ship. She pulls her camera from her pack, ready to take pictures.

Then, delightedly, "We should go inside."

Nomi had been thrilled when Neffatari Nzingha had reached out to her regarding a second attempt at exploring the Ultra Deep Sea together: after all, she was eager to continue getting to know the astrobiologist. Everything had been organized fairly quickly - only a few days after their first expedition - and this time, both women were better prepared to deal with any potential psychological horror.[break][break]
For Nomi, this meant already having one of her Unown out, ready to record whatever it saw. Together, they drifted after Nenet, weaving between sparkling crystals and undulating seaweeds until they reached a familiar hulking shape.[break][break]
"Ah, yes," Nomi murmured. "I did see a ship like this, several months ago...when I came here with a few colleagues of mine. It didn't end up being the most...productive mission, unfortunately."[break][break]
That was an understatement, of course. Rocket Underboss Elisabeth Fiorelli had tried to kill Nomi during that particular expedition - but Nenet didn't need to know about that.[break][break]
"We should be wary of Nihilego, when we go down there," Nomi cautioned. Their poison had been the cause of Elisabeth's frenzied state, the reason she'd attacked Nomi in the first place (or so Nomi had convinced herself).[break][break]
"Anyway, let's check it out. We can set up a research station there." She smiled, eager and encouraging. "I'll follow you down."

"Do you think it's the same one?" Nenet asks, glancing over her shoulder to Nomi for confirmation or denial.

They tread down to an opening in the ship where Nenet pauses them. Looking to her Hatterene, she tips her chin towards the ship as she directs, "See if anything's right inside." As her pokemon ducks inside she looks around the immediate area thoughtfully.

"That sounds good," she agrees. "We can use the first few rooms as a base and set up in there." Once she's finished speaking her Hatterene pops its head out and coos softly, indicating the area is safe for the time being.

Upon entering the dark recesses of the room, Nenet fishes out a flashlight and sweeps it across the area. Finding a table, she uses that to unpack her belongings and set up a camera. With a glance over to Nomi she asks, "Tell me more about the Nihilego? That's the jellyfish-like one, correct?"

Nomi followed after Nenet, touching down on the deck of the ship. She frowned, trying to remember if this was, indeed, the ship she had visited before. "Hm, the name does sound familiar," she murmured, running a hand idly along a cracked wooden beam with seaweed starting to grow out of it. "It could have been this ship. Or one with a similar naming convention, at least."[break][break]
Alpha followed after Nenet's Hatterene, and together, the two Pokemon scouted the immediate area below deck. Nenet did not hesitate to venture below the moment the all-clear had been given, and Nomi was impressed - not for the first time - with the other woman's steadfast resolve. She's not someone to mess with, Nomi thought, grateful to be partnered with someone straightforward and no-nonsense. Things were often much easier that way.[break][break]
The cabin was cool, damp, and dark. Nomi followed suite with her own flashlight, the light allowing them to begin putting together a makeshift research lab. Nomi unpacked her own equipment - mostly for taking energy readings and collecting organic samples - while Nenet set up her camera.[break][break]
"Oh, Nihilego are fascinating," Nomi replied excitedly in response to Nenet's inquiry. "We know they are capable of creating illusions, but it is also believed that they have the ability to read minds...and see into our memories. This would explain why their illusions have more substance than, say, a Zorua's - which are mere mimicry. Nihilego can personalize their illusions...not unlike the dream mist, actually," she realized, thinking of her last encounter with the mysterious substance, herald of the Interdream Zone.[break][break]
"Which, of course, makes them especially dangerous. Once they have you locked inside one of your own memories, they can inject a toxin that can subtly alter your thoughts and actions. From mind reading to...well, mind control."[break][break]
Her tone was casual, pleasant even, but inwardly, she shuddered at the memory of what Nihilego toxin had done to Elisabeth Fiorelli.[break][break]
"We have the cure for it, of course." She paused. "Er, the League does, I mean. Hospitals and such."[break][break]
Rocket too, which is what she'd initially meant.[break][break]
Something rectangular caught Nomi's eye, on a shelf by Nenet's shoulder. "Hey, it looks like there's something behind you," she pointed out. "Some kind of book, maybe?"

Nenet's eyes flash as Nomi describes Nihilego and their ability to create illusions; she wonders if it's merely a hyperactive brain that leads to mind reading abilities or if the creature is something akin to a psychic pokemon.

"I should hope so," she muses as to the news there was a cure, "though I cannot imagine trying to work out the cure for that."
[break][break]
She then looks over her shoulder at Nomi's directive, her attention alighting upon a book left here. Reaching out to open it, Nenet tips her chin towards Nomi to shine her light on its pages as she sets it on the table and opens it to the first page.

Scanning the words thereupon, she muses, "Some sort of ship's log?" With that spoken she flips through the pages, quickly scanning through them. "Odd," she murmurs as she pauses on one of the last pages, "are there any common pokemon listed in here? Only ultra beasts..."

A clank from the depths of the ship draws Nenet's attention, and she shines her flashlight to the nearby doorway that leads deeper into the ship. "I think something's living here," she breathes, a touch of excitement evident in her voice.

It was odd. If true, it was more concrete evidence that the Ultra Deep Sea was some kind of...hub for Ultra Beasts like Nihilego and Poipole. Conditions did appear especially harsh, so it made sense that many common Pokemon species would not choose to live here, but for it to be only Ultra Beasts...that made Nomi think of another possibility.[break][break]
"Perhaps they originate here," she suggested. "Nihilego and Poipole, and whatever other Ultra Beasts might creep about in the shadows of this place." She paused, considering. "Maybe this is their origin point...like the Interdream Zone is the origin of the paradox Pokemon."[break][break]
If so, what did that mean? And how did it explain the rhythmic pulse they often heard when venturing here? Surely the entire rift wasn't some kind of living creature, a massive as-of-yet undiscovered Ultra Beast...[break][break]
The loud clanking caught Nomi's attention just as it had Nenet's, and she whirled around with a sudden burst of adrenaline. Nothing stormed through the cabin door, however, so Nomi crept quietly forward, then peered carefully out into the dark hall. Eyes adjusting, she pointed her flashlight ahead.[break][break]
Something shifted down the hallway: a large, grotesque vaguely humanoid shape, ambling in their direction. It seemed drawn to the light, and when the flashlight shone towards it, it began to pick up speed. She yelped, backing up, then beckoned for Nenet to come over.[break][break]
"It's an undead Megalopolan!" She exclaimed, shocked. "But I've only ever encountered them in Lesser Megalopolis. What's one doing here?"[break][break]
No time to question it further, they had to act. With a deft motion, Nomi activated the Tera orb she carried at her waist. Alpha began to glow, the Unown-A shimmering as clear quartz crystals covered its symbol body.

"They very well could," Nenet muses as to the source of the Ultra Beasts. Her thinking too follows along the same as Nomi's. The vague heartbeat ever-present in the area leaves Nenet curious if they are perhaps inside an even larger organism - one so large it houses an entire ecosystem within its very being.

Thrust out of her thoughts, Nenet peers down the hallway - something inside it shifts and lumbers, and she catches sight of whatever it is moving towards them. "Undead," she asks, bewildered and fascinated at the same time. She looks intently at Nomi as if to grasp further meaning of the younger woman's words, undead, but there's no time for clarifications.

Nomi's pokemon terastalises and Nenet moves to snatch up the ship's log. Deeper into the ship would be a mistake - they could easily get caught up in a room with no exits and whatever lived here surely knew its way around better than they would.

"Back outside," Nenet urges; her gaze cuts over to where her recorder is - hopefully it makes it through the encounter unscathed and they can return later for the footage.

Nomi didn't need to be told twice. She dashed into the hallway just as Alpha disappeared with a pop, reappearing directly in front of the horrific monster closing in on the two women. The terastallized Unown-A glowed a bright white, then released an ICE TERA BLAST directly at the undead Megalopolan.[break][break]
Shards of ice coated the creature, and it jerked, feet now stuck to the decaying wooden floor. As Nomi made for the stairs leading back out to the ship's deck, she paused, noticing something behind the zombie: pale ethereal tendrils of translucent flesh, a star-adorned mushroom-shaped head peeking out from behind the monstrosity. Nomi gasped, all thoughts of escape superseded by her sudden shock.[break][break]

"A Nihilego is controlling it!" She breathed, excited. Nihilego toxin was an extremely potent substance - but to be able to reanimate a dead body? That was another level of mind control beyond what Nomi had already discovered in her research on the parasitic Ultra Beast.[break][break]
"Alpha, change of plans - ignore the Megalopolan. Attack the Nihilego!" Nomi shouted at her Unown.[break][break]
Another ICE TERA BLAST rocketed towards the Nihilego, forcing it to detach from its undead shield, which caused the Megalopolan to stagger awkwardly to the side. It released a spray of sickly acid at Alpha, but the Unown was too quick. Using its ability to teleport, it shifted behind the Nihilego, then attempted to freeze it again. This time, its attack landed.[break][break]
Nomi pulled out a Pokeball and hurled it at the ice-coated Nihilego, who's movements were now sluggish and delayed. Unable to avoid the capture, it swivelled what seemed to be its face around to glance at Nomi, and for half-a-second she felt it regarding her - its touch on her mind as cold as the ice that held it hostage, causing her to shiver. Then there was a burst of light, and it was swallowed up into the Pokeball.[break][break]
"Watch my back while I go and collect it," Nomi murmured to Nenet. The undead Megalopolan would likely still be dangerous until the toxin drained from its body. Hopefully Nenet would be able to thoroughly subdue it.

The cold of the Unknown's terastallisation blasts out in all directions, chilling Nenet to the bone. When she looks up Nomi is no longer retreating and instead advancing; much to her shock a pokeball is thrown towards the now-frozen Nihilego, the body it was toting falling to the ground like a marionette with its strings cut.

There's a moment of nerve-rattling silence as the pokeball shakes, and then ultimately stills, and Nenet exhales a breath she didn't even know she was holding.

"You caught it," she breathes out in equal parts excitement and surprise. Her attention is diverted when, as Nomi nears, the Megalopolan's arms and legs twitch; eyes narrowing, Nenet directs her Hatterene with, "Psycho Cut, push it back!"

With a well-placed sweep of its arm, the Hatterene sends a brutal Psycho Cut towards the jerking corpse to send it sprawling back into the darkness of the ship, allowing Nomi to safely retrieve her pokeball and the Nihilego within.

Continuing to peer into the darkness, the ship's log clutched tightly to her chest, Nenet murmurs after a moment, "I think something's moving in the dark again."
