These are the words of disbelief that tumble from his lips as he sees some of the other volunteer staff, running in and carrying injured Pokémon.[break][break]

“There’s even more! We don’t know who’s done it, but—“ the staff member stammers, and for a few moments points over Alexei’s shoulder. It’s not too far away, but rather alarmingly close—seeing that there’s a plume of black smoke rising from somewhere, complete with Flying-types fleeing the scene.[break][break]

“Ah, shit!” was all he could say next. “Who the hell set a fire so close to the forest?!”[break][break]

“We don’t know!”[break][break]

“If anyone else brings injured Pokémon in, treat them! Don’t turn them away,” he says, and in a flash he’s running towards where the field is, pulling out a whistle and blowing a single harsh blast on it.[break][break]

In a flurry of wings, several shadows come soaring out from nowhere—some had come to a dive down from the sky, while others were just soaring around the area came converging in a single mass, close to where he stood.[break][break]

“Okay, so—there’s a fire. I’m going to need help. Cygne, Mike, go with Kyouya and help out out the fire. Mike, I know your thing is special, please douse the fire quickly! Kyouya, you take the lead and help those two. If you see any Pokémon that need help, bring them back here! Cherre—I can’t believe I’m saying this, but you and Shuyin are coming with me, too. Gabriel, stay close,” he says, doing a quick headcount and sending off the Swanna and Pelipper along with a Braviary, who nods and flies ahead.[break][break]

The Wartortle and Marshtomp waddle over, before being called into beams of red light, while the Salamence stands quiet, waiting—the rest of the Flying-types and non-Flying-types scatter, back into the distance to keep watch around the Gym proper.[break][break]

“What a fucking mess,” he grumbles as he’s about to get on the Salamence’s back to join the other three Pokémon he’d sent on ahead.

[attr="class","spiral"] fernando is no stranger to unintentional fires. the shrine during new years is too recent to be a vague memory and his time with victor evans lead to stopping what would've been a disastrous tragedy. the fire in fortree is no different and fernando approaches with a calm collectiveness that's been molded by countless experiences.

"battle routine set."

the quagsire and azumarill are the natural choice to bring out. it is the mimikyu and riolu that accompany them that may raise a few eyebrows but luckily fernando knows what he's doing. some trainers prefer a certain type of pokemon over another but fernando plays no favors. his expertise are techniques and how to work around them. the ditto that leaps from his shoulders and next to the rest of his pokemon are an ample example.

"execute."

one RAIN DANCE may not be enough to put out the raging fire but what about five? dark clouds manifest above and the rain that follows threatens to drown out any flames that dare to encroach on the expansive canopy of the city's trees.

so much for just visiting.

Over where the Braviary had flown ahead, the thick smoke began to obscure its field of vision, and so he let out a piercing warning call to his companions.[break][break]

The Swanna and Pelipper that were following him had already summoned up dark storm clouds above where the fire had spread—one had summoned a Rain Dance, while the other’s Drizzle had activated, an attempt to drench the fire.[break][break]

Now that there was torrential water pouring down all around them, the Braviary continued to fly deeper into the woods, now the smoke was becoming some kind of rolling fog—but up ahead he could still hear the crackling of flames.[break][break]

Calling out another time, the Pelipper made to follow the Braviary, while the Swanna set down in one of the trees, intent on keeping the downpour contained to that part of the forest.[break][break]

Back out where Alexei was now on his Salamence, he sees something else—wait a second, he didn’t have those two Pokémon. While he did have a Riolu of his own, he could only wonder if that was a—no that was certainly not a Pikachu—if there was someone else who’d spotted the fire and came to help.[break][break]

Hovering near the edge of the woods, he looked around, wondering who those Pokémon belonged to. He had to get ready just in case there was someone else in the woods—what if the person who’d set the fire was still in there?

[attr="class","spiral"] the rain pours thick and fernando becomes drenched in the heavy downpour. his hair droops onto his forehead and covers his eyes, much like the lingering flames. he enjoys the foreign sensation of wet clothes against his skin if only because that means that the forest will suffer the same relief.

"good job."

he keeps them out just in case there's more damage than meets the eye. burnt wood, heavy rain, perfect ingredients for old trees to collapse and potentially harm anyone caught underneath. he approaches fortree with purpose, one that is not unforgotten despite the momentary detour.

The rain intensified—he was pretty certain that it wasn’t the doing of his Swanna or his Pelipper—even Drizzle had limits as to how strong the downpour could really be. Much as he didn’t want to go into the downpour that was now blanketing the forests, he knew he had to, if but to check for any last-minute stragglers.[break][break]

Or maybe catch whoever it was in the act?[break][break]

Eventually, he squared his shoulders and threw the hood over his head, zipping up his jacket and flying into the torrential downpour to see if he would be able to find the culprit.[break][break]

While he eventually spotted his Swanna holed up in a tree somewhere, it took him a while before he eventually found the Pelipper and the Braviary, who was forced to alight on a rickety-looking tree, the better to let the smoke clear out.[break][break]

“No sign?” he asks.[break][break]

A shake of the head from the Braviary, a caw of neglect from the Pelipper.[break][break]

“Either way, whoever else summoned the Rain Dance, really did a good job. Let’s go find whoever this other person is,” he hums, quickly recalling the Braviary and the Pelipper. Along the way back out, he also recalls the Swanna, reduced to preening her feathers.[break][break]

Eventually, Alexei lands near where he spotted the Riolu and the Pikachu-wannabe before coming in for a landing. Even if he knew he would look stupid, he looks around before quietly muttering, “Where’s your owner? I’m pretty sure you have someone, somewhere…”

[attr="class","spiral"] The series of bird Pokemon go unnoticed. Fernando cannot piece together which Pokemon are wild or tame by their behavior. With the recent fire quelled, the torrent of rainfall make this neither the time or place to prey upon any Pokemon that crosses his path. Not unless it acts as the aggressor but this isn't the case. Alexei's Pokemon will roam freely and Fernando continues onward toward Fortree.

From the foliage, Fernando finds himself back on the road leading out of the forest and closer to Fortree. His Riolu and Mimikyu remain by his side, the former walking by his side while the other sit atop his shoulder. The visage of the councilman is distinguishable even from a distance, even with his wet mop of hair.

Now that he’s back on stable land, he gives the Salamence a reassuring neck rub as well, before recalling the draconid back to rest. Only when he looks up does he sight he’s no longer alone—and boy he was not prepared for this at all.[break][break]

One of the high-ranking councilmen, who normally shut themselves away in Evergrande doing who knew what, was actually down and out, in the flesh, wandering around?![break][break]

“What—what brings you here?” he inquires quietly, recognizing the mop of hair. The one rumored to have so many siblings doing who knew what. In fact Alexei had already met one of them, the Lavaridge Gym Leader previously. His eyebrows slightly went up at the sight of councilman Silph, right there, in the flesh.[break][break]

“You—was that your Rain Dance that helped put out the fire?” he asks next, bringing down the hood of his jacket and unzipping it so that he could let it dry in the humid air.[break][break]

Much as he wanted to ask about the Riolu and the Pikachu-lookalike, he decided not to.[break][break]

At least, not yet.

As far as he knows, it's another trainer and he answer accordingly, as he would have with any other stranger in public: with courtesy appropriate for his public image. "I'm on the way to Fortree to visit." A plain answer but there's only so much he has to disclose to a complete stranger.

It isn't until Alexei reveals himself does Fernando recognize the visage. While his meeting with Alexei have never been anything substantial, he recognizes all high-ranking League officials from their certified mugshots. How lucky, just the individual he was looking for. "It was. I couldn't just allow our precious Fortree to go up in flames now can I?" His smile is welcoming, satisfied now that his prey has presented itself.

“Wait… are you here for a challenge?” he breathed out a few moments later. Best to pull out the thorn and get it done and over with. He knew that whoever else with a name that sought him out either wanted a challenge or was after him because of something he may have unintentionally done, so…[break][break]

“If you are, well, it’s a short way back to the outdoor arena. Are you here for the traditional or the non-traditional challenge?” he inquired a few moments afterward. He wondered if the rumors were true—that this man, in front of him, was nigh-unbeatable.[break][break]

Like a monolith.

"I haven't heard much about your Gym or it's challenges but my intent is to visit each Gym and confirm that their challenges are all passable by accomplished trainers." He takes after Alexei and follows his direction, having more faith in the native's direction of the endless trees than his own.

"We need to make sure each Gym Leader is judging their challengers on the merit of their capabilities as a trainer, so I'll partake in whichever one you think is the most extreme or controversial."

The way the councilman had expressed his intent sent him on an internal kind of panic, but on the outside he was perfectly fine and calm. How did he even manage this?[break][break]

He had no idea.[break][break]

To actually see one of the so-called ‘faceless’ council members who oversaw the region in the flesh and mingling with the people, well, it was quite a surprise for him.[break][break]

“I’ve heard… rumors. About your battle style…” he began, taking a turn and eventually following a path down and out of the winding trees, which placed them back within proximity of the city’s border limits. “They say you’re like a monolith in battle. Is this true?” he inquired, wondering if he was going to get a straight answer.[break][break]

“If you want to try extreme, I hope you have a Pokémon that can fly you up in the air,” he continued after a few moments of silence.[break][break]

That was all he was going to spoil for him, either way.[break][break]

To be honest it was still in the works, but now was the best time to actually try what he was thinking of when it came to non-traditional challenges!

Fernando smiles at the comment, playing coy but ultimately laughing at Alexei's suggestion — anything to downplay his leaking reputation that seems to saturate well beyond his desires. "If you mean I stand around not doing much then I suppose that's correct. I would hope you had heard better things about me but truth be told I'm not much of a battler. My Pokemon are more skilled than myself but that's because I've had help training them."

The mention of flying Pokemon is something that Fernando had somewhat expected but hadn't prepared for. Not enough to meet his own criteria for what was acceptable. But that could change. He just needs to make a detour. "Depends what else it needs to do. I might have to stop by a PC if that's okay. I brought some of my smaller Pokemon with me to Fortree."

His eyebrows went up slightly at the mention of him not being a battler—it didn’t sit well with him. He had his own ways of gathering information, of course, and he didn’t believe what the other was saying.[break][break]

Of course, on the outside, he gave the other man a surprised look.[break][break]

“Really? I beg to differ,” he continued a few moments later. “I’ve heard stories from other trainers that they’ve seen you battling. And it’s scary, admittedly. Well, of course they would be scared because everything you throw at them just goes back to them,” he added in an off-hand manner. He wasn’t going to reveal his sources—well, at least not yet anyway.[break][break]

Not until he was asked.[break][break]

“You just need one that you can ride up into the sky, that’s all—that’s one of the main things at least. Since my arena is open-air, well, who knows what’s waiting for you up there,” he went on, mischievous twinkle in his eyes.[break][break]

He had several options before him now—rain, sand, or snow. He wasn’t too sure about having an extreme sunlight motif yet, but the first three he had already decided on.[break][break]

And now it was time to take it out for a test run against the Man himself.

"If Olivia Abbiati is calling me an expert because I used THUNDERSHOCK against her water Pokemon then I guess I'll take it. I suppose what qualifies as scary battling has loosened up since I was a kid watching the Gym circuit in Kanto."

Naturally, Fernando's way off the mark but that the only assumption he can make with how little he knows about Alexei and who could've sewn such a yarn. Not that it was wrong, but perspective is all in the eye of the beholder. "Unless, that tale came from someone else? I haven't battled anyone in quite a while so maybe my memories fuzzy." Which is why Fernando leaves the conversation on a vague cliffhanger, subtly prying for a few more clues in-between small talk.

Fernando stares back at Alexei with a plain expression, curious but muted about the man's odd enthusiasm about his Gym challenge. "I suppose I'll need to stop by a PC then. What's more important for your challenge? A Pokemon that can fly fast or fly high. I should probably choose something stable and safe if I'm going to be riding it, no?"

“Well, I need to switch mine out too. Should you know the way toward the Fortree Rescue and Treatment Sanctuary, that’s where the Gym is—it’s part of the outdoor facilities. I take you want to see another kind of challenge… I can give you that,” he added.[break][break]

He then looked down and realized that his clothes were still dripping wet. Would he change out of them now?[break][break]

“If you want to get a change of clothes, go ahead and do that while I get the outdoor arena ready.”
