Fernando's expression flattens.

"I'm not going to die now am I, Ivanov?"

While he had no qualms with artistic freedom granted to Gym Leaders and their respective challenges, there is a line they cannot cross. The League cannot allow trainers to risk their lives all for a chance to prove their worth. The scandal would be immeasurable. Thankfully, Fernando has faith that this is not the case and teeters along his own suspicions carefully. At least until Alexei clarifies and steers him away from his dreadful conclusion.

There's little more to elaborate on and Fernando sidelines the conversation with his own thoughts of a potential roster. It's been a while since he's utilized his flyers.

“No, you’re not going to die—as long as you trust your companion while we’re up in the air,” was all he could say.[break][break]

To be fair he had been doing test runs with some of the more willing staff members who didn’t mind hanging on for dear life as their boss was trying out variations of this non-traditional attempt he was trying to fine-tune and perfect.[break][break]

“Get ready now,” he continued, humming slightly as he pulled out a thin whistle he wore around his neck and blew exactly one note. The sounds of many wings flapping overhead, shadows flying—before a Salamence circled around and came in for a landing.[break][break]

“Not sure if you’ve flown in extreme conditions before, so this is actually going to be a legitimate test run with an actual challenger,” he admitted as he fished out a small earpiece before hooking it up and turning around, allowing the other to get ready.[break][break]

While his back was turned, he was already giving instructions to his staff. If Fernando would notice, all manner of non-Flying Pokémon would start gathering around the area, like spectators… watching, waiting, until Alexei himself was up in the air astride his Salamence.[break][break]

Let the mayhem begin.

His eyes narrow in when Alexei adds in that this isn't a challenge he's practiced before. Fernando's reservations were to grant Alexei the benefit of the doubt but the Gym Leader's words make it hard to argue in his favor. "Sounds dangerous. I think I have just the Pokemon." Still wary of the actual entails of such a match, Fernando plucks one of the Pokeballs on his belt and tosses it forward.

"This is Porygon," he doesn't bother renaming it despite its evolution. "One of my most trusted Pokemon. It may be a little small but I assume this'll suffice?"

Fernando doesn't mount the Pokemon yet. Riding it will prove difficult considering its small size but that doesn't mean it's impossible. If anything, it'll look like an adult riding on a rideable toy Ponyta.

I guess I have to put down a specific rule for my non-traditional challenge… at least, this variation would have one stipulation, he thought as he was waiting for the other to join him up in the air.[break][break]

He figured, since he was alone for now, he could take advantage of the quiet as he quickly sent instructions to the rest of his willing staff members down on the ground.[break][break]

Alexei waited until the other had joined him up in the sky.[break][break]

“Welcome to the non-traditional challenge… the main theme of this is trust,” he began, deciding to keep it short and simple. Flying over to where the other was most likely hovering, he then pulled out a blindfold.[break][break]

“Since it’s trust… I would like to ask you to cover your Pokémon’s eyes,” before pulling out a second blindfold and doing the same with his Salamence.[break][break]

“What the eyes cannot see, the other senses would compensate,” he continued, before a sudden, powerful Sandstorm began to whip throughout the aerial arena. At the same time, boulders from several directions came cascading down—his other Pokémon who could use Rock Slide were raising hell around the area.[break][break]

“See you on the other side of the storm!” he called out, before flying straight into the howling grit and crashing boulders raining down around them.[break][break]

Truth be told, he was inspired by the fallout that the false Ho-oh had caused for this first part of the challenge.

[attr="class","spiral"]Hesitance comes from a lack of reassurance. The sight of a grown man encumbering his limbs around a Porygon2 begs for concern. It's almost to the point that Fernando swaps his Pokemon for something more mobile. However, the challenge emphasized trust and there's no one else Fernando believes in more than his own creation. They'll have to take it slow and steady but there's no doubt in his mind they'll be able to cross the finish line.

"Flight routine set."

Liftoff is nerve-racking. Fernando holds on for dear life even though the Porygon rises in a fluid, stable motion upward. It's more levitation than flying but that's only due to the Pokemon's lack of appendages. After all, a Helicopter is considered a flying automobile.

"Execute."

Alexei had been correct. The addition of the blindfold accelerates the Pokemon's senses. It has to rely in hearing and it's memory of the buildings layout in order to calculate it's flight path. Even with the addition of the SANDSTORM, Fernando's Porygon relies on measurements and calculations to path its destination. What Alexei faces isn't another breathing creature but a super computer Pokeialized. The only issue is that the Porgyon can only calculate what it already knows. Adding ROCK SLIDE to the mix is something Fernando will have to call out in order for the Porygon to respond.

"Projectiles from above!"

Porygon takes its time moving forward. There's no rush. What's more important is continually firing off a myriad of TRI-FORCE blasts upwards to divert the oncoming ROCK SLIDE elsewhere. Thunder, ice, and fire shoot straight up, knocking any incoming boulders off their path and harmlessly to either side.

Slow and safe beats fast and reckless any day.

Well, he figured to himself—the grit would make things a lot more complicated—that was because his own clothes were still dripping wet. He could only guess as to why the other had favored such a most unusual choice for an aerial mount, but if it worked for the man…[break][break]

Alexei would just have to confuse and confound him in this mess, then![break][break]

“Incoming from below!” he said as he flattened himself on the Salamence, who let out a surprised screech before feeling the weight shift upward. Right then and there several aerial boulders came flying towards where the two had been previously, cracking and smashing against each other.[break][break]

Shit, I should really have my flying goggles with me all the time… this is insane! He thought to himself as more boulders were headed their way helter-skelter.[break][break]

“Left! Barrel-roll, strafe right!” he called out as he continued to squint through the grit, seeing more of the obstacles headed their way and hanging on for dear life.[break][break]

How far would he have to fly—[break][break]

“Climb!” he added a few moments later and the Salamence bucked for a few seconds before shifting the flight pattern and flying upward, barely missing a particularly large boulder that had come hurtling from out of nowhere.

[attr="class","spiral"]Wherein Alexei relies on his Salamence's superior speed and mobility to navigate through the obstacle course, Fernando prefers the much more defensive snail's pace. Without any of the fancy tricks, his Porygon2 continues to steadily sail through the air without any fancy maneuvers. All those fancy rolls and sudden jerks are bound to leave the rider with whiplash and dizziness. Why risk it when the task is just to make it through the course.

"Above."

"STAY."

They remain motionless as a boulder passes a few meters in front of them.

"CLEAR."

And they continue.

"ELEVEN."

He had no idea if the other man was either on his tail or had flown ahead of him—all Alexei was concentrated on now was swerving and avoiding the boulders that were coming from so many directions, it was practically insanity to try and knock them away head-on.[break][break]

Adding to the howling grit that was swirling around them and increasing in intensity—he knew he had to find the fastest way out of the area before he got flattened between the boulders—or worse, got knocked off some of them and forced to concede early.[break][break]

“Whoa!” he yelped as he hung on tight for dear life, forcing the Salamence to quickly do a corkscrew turn as several large boulders came hurtling down on him from above. Yikes, that’s way too close for comfort! He thought to himself as he squinted through the mess of sand and rock pelting through the area.[break][break]

“Right—no, your other right—and bank skyward!” he commanded as several more rocks came crashing down their way. The Salamence, initially confused by the command, quickly changed directions mid-air to avoid getting smacked hard across the stomach before pulling upward.[break][break]

The air was considerably less… messy up here, but they weren’t out of the woods just yet![break][break]

“Forward!” he added a few moments later as the grit cleared somewhat, offering him a path towards the other side of the storm and to safety.

[attr="class","spiral"] Fernando's much further behind than Alexei. However, his paths is more efficient and his Pokemon's stamina is reserved only for attacking. Instead of having to use elaborate maneuvers, the Pokemon's only exertion is the constant attacks its lets out when ordered. However, considering the difference in actions, his Porygon is more than fine with continuing.

"Forward."

In a stroke of luck, Fernando's sees a path where the boulders don't seem to fall in line. He orders his Porygon forward, timing it as he keeps an eye out for any spontaneous debris. He can only see so much in the weathering SANDSTORM but the councilman finds himself coincidentally making it pass without harm.

Just how much could his Salamence take?[break][break]

The sand was admittedly getting into both their eyes, but he hung on for dear life as the draconid rocketed forward, eventually clearing out of the howling grit and falling boulders.[break][break]

They were flying too fast, too soon, and he was concerned for the Salamence the moment they’d cleared the first weather condition.[break][break]

“Gabe, are you okay?” he asked the draconid, to which he got a huff, a shake of the head, before letting out a roar. He then urged the Salamence to turn around and watch the sandstorm, awaiting the emergence of the other man from within its depths.[break][break]

Now, how was he going to handle the second half of this? Snow, or rain? They’d already had rainy conditions previously, and he wondered if the other was prepared to fly in frigid weather… well, everything was a test at this point.[break][break]

He watched, and waited.

In exchange for speed, neither him nor his Porygon look as exhausted as the other pair. "That was pretty dangerous for something you've never tested before," Fernando answers, shaking his wrist to clear off any lingering sand. "I would hope you have mechanisms to assist less skilled trainers."

With a sharp whistle, the Salamnece flew right into the torrential downpour, conditions going from perfect to almost zero with how much rain was pouring through the aerial arena. Not too long after, the strong updrafts would start blowing through the rain storm.

Wait— he has to catch a Pokemon that's much faster than him and trained by Hoenn's arguable most proficient flying type trainer?

Fernando scoffs inwardly. He'll have to remind Alexei that detailing the entirety of the challenge beforehand is essential to ensuring a trainer's success. Bringing up rules once the challenge is underway can be both demoralizing and reek of collusion.

"Fair."

If Alexie wants to bring out the rules last moment then he'll abide by them. Skating by the skin of his teeth is Fernando's specialty. There's another reason he had picked his Porygon.

"Go ahead."

The cybernetic Pokemon lets out a weird tangent of electrical noises before the entire area is covered in a psychic distortion. Intense GRAVITY prevents them for any further flying as they're tethered to the ground. Their descent is slow but inevitable. Although they're low enough to be hit by GROUND type attacks, the Porygon still levitates several inches from the floor, using its natural magnetic properties to move albeit not as freely. Could the same be said about a Pokemon that relies solely on its wing to achieve flight?

Fernando puts his money on no.

Crossing the distance should be simple now that neither of them can achieve flight.

Is a hovering Porygon faster than a crawl Salamence? Fernando's Porygon LOCKS-ON just in case.
