Now see, the funny thing about this was—Jack was one of those few people who didn’t own a phone, mostly because well—who would contact him?

Otherwise, the grin was still on his face as he took the paper that had the number scrawled down on it; at least he’d be able to find her again later once he’d scrounged up a Wooloo that wouldn’t get so attached to his herd!

He then let out another cackle, before he realized—in the chaos that happened, they’d clean forgotten to introduce themselves; since their Pokémon (well, his mostly) had taken the spotlight!

“Oop, there we go,” he chuckled at last as he shook her hand back.

“My name’s Jack, and you already know the names of all my little herd,” he bantered back.

“Nice to meet you Jack! And your herd,” Maoja glanced down at the various blobs of white. Sure, she knew the names. But the identifiers were too hard to make out for her. As long as Jack didn’t quiz her on it then she’d be perfectly fine! Right?

“Anyway,” she sipped from her lukewarm coffee and leaned further into the park bench, “My plans were to just… sit here for a while. You’re more than welcome to join me, if you really want! Just trying to relax after work.”

Out of sight, out of mind. She wasn’t in that awful building getting yelled at or harassed by the people or her coworkers: she was in nature, with a guy who had four really nice and soft Wooloo and a cup of warm coffee in her hands. This is good! I am good! This is just what the doctor ordered.

“What do you do for a living?” She asked. "Are the Wooloo the breadwinners? Or do you just really like them?"

Like I now do, she added mentally.

“Well, you know how there’s always this one poor shepherd that’s getting memed when it comes to their flock getting lost? I can’t help but think that’s me,” he laughed as he took the invitation to join her on the bench.

“Well, see, I’m that shepherd, plus my Yamper is all but useless—maybe I’ll introduce you to Sumi another time,” he added a few moments later.

He thought he saw a ball of white escaping, before he whistled once in that direction.

“Ger! Keep an eye on your sibling for me, will you?” he asked the grumpy Wooloo who by now was finished chomping on some grass. “Thanks.”

Returning his attention to his companion, he then leaned back against said park bench.

“I travel where the wind takes me. If anyone needs some kind of herding help, well, I’m here to fill out that niche.”

“A wandering shepherd, eh?” Maoja stared off into blank space, eyes hidden behind her black sunglasses. “Sounds kinda nice, in a way. Just get to walk around, meet all sorts of people, and always get to walk away from those you don’t!”

How can you lose them anyway? She glanced down at the obvious balls of fluff, which stood out like sore thumbs against the dying grass and wide strip of concrete. Well, mostly stood out. However, she was the exception rather than the rule. I shouldn’t say anything on the matter, then. Not my place.

“Well, can’t be the worst thing in the world,” she sipped her coffee. “Like meeting people! Look how that’s going for you right now!”

Frank walked over to the pair and stood behind the both of them. He looked entirely unfazed by the cold (or didn’t show it), but kept his gaze affixed to the various living cotton balls. Maoja put one of her now gloved hands on his, “And I’m sure that anyone that needs your expertise is mighty glad to see you when it matters.”

“Living on the road does allow me that much freedom,” he continued with this wistful look on his face as he turned to look over where his four Wooloo were now… apparently running circles around the Alakazam without a singular care in the world!

…more like, it was three of the four Wooloo; Ger the grumpy one could only give the other Pokémon this tiny little sigh of apology and shake his head because his siblings were being total goofballs again—especially Wain! Wain was the worst violator of the entire bunch.

“I go wherever the wind… or my Wooloo—yes, all four of them—take me,” he chuckled afterward.

“They pick the destination, I follow them on their journey to make sure nobody gets hurt. Or lost. Like what happened earlier. That was a fluke. Oh my god I am so sorry if I took up your time!” he apologized a few moments afterward.

“And your coffee’s gotten cold by now. Do… do you want a replacement? I can get you another one,” he offered.

“Oh, don’t worry about my time! Came out here just to enjoy it, and enjoy it I did,” Maoja reassured Jack. After all, what better way to spend a day out in the park with a herd of Wooloo? Even if their owner didn’t think so, his description of daily life sounded just as dreamy as she assumed.

But…

“If you want some coffee, we can get some more,” she stood up suddenly from the bench. It wasn’t late enough (hopefully) for her to stay up all night with one more cup of coffee. Even if hers wasn’t as warm as she liked, the opportunity presented itself as the livestock did earlier.

Perfectly on time and in the best position for me possible!

“However, if you want to lead the way, I’d appreciate it. I’d feel a lot more comfortable with a shepherd in the lead,” she said. It wasn’t an entire lie: having someone in the lead was always easier. But she didn’t remember the exact way back, and navigation at this time of day tended to cause problems.

Better to let an expert handle it. And handle it he did as they walked down the chilly street sidewalk, Alakazam and four Wooloo in tow. At least Frank made sure they didn’t run into the street– or roll.
