[attr="class","inner-finally"]Another girl. Despite all the love and support she's given in her life, Eris has realised that she has an astonishing lack of sister figures in her life. Curiosity piqued, she leans her weight onto her right foot and tries to take a better peek at the mysterious friend. And what catches her attention first is the mask, then the rather comfy looking poncho that the stranger wears.[break][break]

"I really like your mask! It's cute!" Sincere, but almost painfully ignorant to the way that Navy struggles with mental gymnastics. She feels a tap on her shoulder as the old lady hands her the Shinx mask, smiling oh so brightly as she wears it on the side of her head.[break][break]

Luckily enough, Navy seems to get back into the flow, pulling words from his knotted tongue and revealing a name close to his heart. Gabe. Must be a nickname, just like Navy's. Extending both hands to receive her share of takoyaki, she snickers as Reiner leaps right at those held before his snout.[break][break]

"Good thing you got him his own share, or I'd have to share mine!"

“I’d never forget my favorite Luxray!” Gabe grins. His smile always carries the innocent, angelic light of a considerate younger brother. “I kept asking Navy if we could get a Shinx, but he said we didn’t have room in our place.” Gabe wanted whatever Pokemon was popular at the time. Luxray was by far his favorite electric Pokemon. It’s a natural leap in logic that he’d be taken with Reiner.[break][break]
“Upupu.” The masked girl laughs, giving Eris a thumbs up. She reaches for the girl’s hand, urging her to follow. There are dozens of other stalls. Games of luck, games of skill, games of will. Every kind of game a young child could want to play in a summer festival.[break][break]
“Gonna miss the heat.” Navy quips to Eris. “Arceus I wish it was summer in the real world.”[break][break]
“Acting like you’re LARPing is Kyle’s thing.” Gabe huffs, looking around. Perhaps he’s looking for kyle lopez. “I wonder if they have a Magikarp catching game.”[break][break]
Come to think of it…he did win Kohryu for Gabe at a festival just like this.[break][break]

Anyone who has seen just how cool Reiner is would absolutely back up her claims.[break][break]

Before she can pull up her whole list of why Luxray's are a must-have in his household, Eris finds herself tugged along by the nameless girl. Curiosity wanes in the face of sheer wonder, colours, laughter and endless prizes pulling her attention in far too many directions to count.[break][break]

"Really? I kind of like the cold..." Is she weird for thinking that? She imagines it must seem kind of weird, considering just where she'd been born and raised. "Snow makes a place really pretty, and sledding is really fun!"[break][break]

And right as it all ends, she still has little festivals like this to look forward to.[break][break]

"Mmm..." Asking her to pick her favourite game feels akin to asking her to pick what bizarre ice cream flavour she likes best. They all come with their different good sides but at the end of the day, all that really matters is whether she had fun. That, and how many prizes she's won.[break][break]

"I think I like the ones with the cork guns... where you aim at the prize you want and shoot 'em? I'm really good at that!"

“Oh yeah?” His eyes come alight with the promise of competition. The brothers are alike in that regard, although Gabriel’s area of expertise is far broader. Whether by some trick of the simulation or fate, they happen to be close to such a game when the question is answered. Prizes line the booth. Big, small, hard targets, figurines in the shapes of curious Pokemon, anything you could want to take home to your significant other or forget on your shelf.[break][break]
“Come on, then. Let’s see who’s better.” Gabe and his companion fall into place. Raising their guns, they shoot with practiced ease. The younger brother points his gun sideways. His masked friend follows suit. Pop, pop, pop, they shoot.[break][break]
“Come on, Navy. Join in.” Beneath the heavy brown mask, Navy knows his brother is pouting. The older brother knows that tone, knows it very well. His teeth grind, mind alight with mixed emotion.[break][break]
“I’m good. Don’t wanna one-up you.”[break][break]
“What do you mean, one up me?” Gabe’s pout turns fierce, as fierce of a boy about to hit puberty can manage.[break][break]
“You cried like a baby the first time Ironsides and Kohryu fought. Think I’m gonna give you the chance to embarrass yourself in front of a girl?”[break][break]
“B-Battle you? Girl? What’re you--?” A moment later, he is composed. “Kohryu’s a cool name. Come on, Eris. Maybe if you can get the hardest prize, he’ll get a shinx!”

"Do we really-" It's too late once they've picked up those guns, a spot very obviously left open for her to join in. With Navy refusing to take up arms, she too wonders if she can afford to take that option.[break][break]

Not when Gabe is directly addressing her, nor when that other girl watches her so intently. At the end of the day, peer pressure is far too effective over little things like this, a low sigh blown through her lips as she reaches for one.[break][break]

"Reiner."[break][break]

He's already there by her side, supporting her just in case she somehow falls over during the process of aiming. Looking over the shelves, the hardest prize to win seems to be a giant -[break][break]

"Clodsire..."[break][break]

Now she absolutely has to do her best.[break][break]

Five shots, three weak points to aim for. The first misses, her eye squinting as she adjusts for the margin of error. The second hits on the giant snout, barely moving the stuffed toy. Three more tries and she takes a deep breath, shrugging her shoulder back as she cracks her neck.[break][break]

Pop! Pop! Pop! The plushie teeters upon the edge of the shelf, leaning heavily to one side as if holding on for dear life. The duo watches with bated breath, the gun gingerly placed back onto the counter as they pray with all their might. And finally, it falls right off.[break][break]

Her eye lights up, her posture straightened as she turns to look at Navy, her tongue too far tied to express any of her feelings.

All her friends crowd around her, offering their congratulations. All save Navy, who hovers back. It is, after all, claustrophobic, being boxed in by people. So, to save her the worry, he calls out, grabs some attention.[break][break]
“Looks like you’re not just all talk, troublemaker. Clodsire’s yours.” Nodding, the man manning the counter reaches up, pulls the plush Clodsire off of his resting place, and hands him down to Eris. Her masked friend cheers, offering a noise that sounds like yippee![break][break]
“Yeah, that was good…” Gabe huffs, placing his hands in the pockets of his hakama. The sun is starting to droop. Time seems to move at an accelerated rate here in this strange universe.[break][break]
“You should come shoot with Kyle and me sometime. We’re always hitting up the arcade while Navy’s busy with work.”[break][break]
Their friend tugs at Gabe and Eris’s sleeve. It seems to want to lead them somewhere. Running past them all, they make for the stairs leading away from the festival. Turning back, she waves once again.[break][break]
“Huh.” For the first time since landing in this particular spin of the simulation, Navy’s posture straightens. Even beneath the mask, his eyes flit about, wondering where the trick is. There’s no way this is just a simple festival.[break][break]
“Wonder where she’s going.” Gabe says, his prize forgotten owing to this new point of curiosity.

[attr="class","inner-finally"]"Yippee..." When the masked girl cheers, Eris can't help but echo it softly, perhaps made a little antsy by the lack of space. But as she receives the Clodsire and squishes it, she can feel a bit of the tension beginning to slip.[break][break]

"If it's fun, I guess?" Would playing games with Kyle... well, the only Kyle she knows is the champion of Hoenn. And given Navy's position in the League, she can imagine that they could be friends in some capacity. But ultimately, where the simulation go, she follows, stumbling a little over her feet as she lets her eye wander through the blurring colours and shapes.[break][break]

"H- hold up!"[break][break]

What lays up beyond those steps? Feather light steps carry her closer and closer, a chill tapping at her spine as she quickly ascends.

It is clear over time that this is no human, but a Pokemon. However, you play along, enjoying your time with this friendly creature.[break][break]

Eventually, the Pokemon brings you to the outskirts of the festival to offer gratitude before its departure. But the good times do not last. Its crystal mask begins to crack as a TOXIC CHAIN bursts from inside it. As the scene begins to change, it swings its IVY CUDGEL at you.

“Aw, I guess she’s gotta go. Her parents must be strict.” Gabe pouts, no more pleased by the notion than Eris probably is. “Well…hopefully we’ll get to see her again soon.”[break][break]
“Maybe.” There’s a note of danger in Navy’s voice. Darkness creeps around them. The light of the festival seems dim, distant. It would take them a handful of steps and they would be back among the festive, but those steps seem a high labor.[break][break]
“Say your goodbyes.” Beneath his poncho, Navy has six pokeballs ready to go. Gabe bows. The ogre, too, bows. Afterwards, there is an awkward pause. A soft smile. She turns to Eris. A wave is punctuated by the crack of a mask.[break][break]
Hairline fractures cascade towards a split. Scenes from a bygone horror spill over. Chains dripping with poison spill out, threatening to envelop Eris and Gave both.[break][break]
“Reiner.” It is not often that he speaks to the Luxray directly, but today he bellows the word. They’re united in purpose: keep the young ones safe.

The wave is innocent, the smile and farewells should be the same. And yet, the splinter in the mask oozes with thick sludge, familiar chains exploding towards them as she instinctively takes a step back.[break][break]

Reiner doesn't need to be told twice, claws grinding deep into stone as he charges at the strange creature. A Springtide Storm surges from his side, blasting it backwards for just enough space to grab Gabe and Eris before they tumble down the steps in shock.

Amidst the surging storm, Roland flies. Held in his hand is a pink blade. A blade can be many things. Today, here in this what-if, it is a blade of salvation. Roland is Navy’s champion for this battle, stepping forward with frantic energy.[break][break]
He, too, once loved Gabe. He, too, cares for Eris. Even a machine’s heart aches for innocence lost.[break][break]
“What the heck is that abomination?” Gabe’s voice changes abruptly upon seeing Roland. Spasming out of Reiner’s grasp, he falls to the floor. His face is split open. Navy has seen his face take that shape before. He has seen his brother with that tissue damage, laying on a morgue slab.[break][break]
Roland doesn’t see. Roland doesn’t need to see. All he knows is that the monster before him is about to swing. She swings a cudgel lined with grass. The machine’s blade ignites with fire. He fights this ogre with the power of possibility. In his machine heart, he sees a world engulfed by flames. In that world is a boy who would burn so others did not have to burn. In that fantasy world, his heart kindles with fire’s strength.[break][break]
A crown of flames adorns his head. Flames meet grass. A single blade meets the cudgel. The world goes white. The story ends. What comes next is not a tale for Navy and Eris to write alone. This is but a simulation of what could be, somewhere, some when.
