Though one scenario was far more accurate than the other. Still, watching him adjust his expectations of her despite the mountains of arrogance and pride he possessed was oddly endearing.[break][break]

Would he follow her all the way to Fortree? She realized then she didn't know.[break][break]

Their footsteps began to slow, and she squeezed his hand gently, as if telegraphing her uncertainty at their change in pace. Was he hesitating for some reason? Or just taking his time?[break][break]

"Have you been here before?" she asked instead, indicating ahead of them.

That earned a bright laugh from her, and she shook her head. "What a low bar for success you've set for yourself," she quipped, entertained that it meant the night not devolving into attempted murder.[break][break]

Self-consciously, she brushed a strand of golden hair out of her face as they approached the cafe, wondering if her own disguise was too subtle. Most of her infamy had been earned during her time under the height of Wo-chien's influence, with pitch-black hair and blood-red eyes. Sightings of her since then had been infrequent, but not avoided entirely.[break][break]

Only members of AQUA, she suspected, remained fully aware of the shift in her appearance between then and now. Or so she reasoned at present. Most people wouldn't be looking for an underboss at a tiny Lilycove restaurant, particularly one dressed in such a nonthreatening manner.[break][break]

Just the same, a borrowed Zorua in her purse managed to alter key details here and there to dissuade any potential recognition.[break][break]

Her hand traveled up his arm as she moved closer to him, leaning in to whisper in his ear.[break][break]

"If someone recognizes me, you'll need to act surprised and attack me. Do you understand?"[break][break]

That was the price of this public outing she'd agreed upon.

it's then that he wonders if his words have ever managed to soothe Elisabeth Fiorelli. likely not, considering the volatile nature of their relationship so far has always put them in fight or flight, and that saddens him a little.[break][break]

he smiles, offering support as he leans in to whisper more assurances.[break][break]

"just trust me."[break][break]

and as they approach the quaint restaurant, they are led to their table, not in the restaurant itself but out on the beach, lit by dim candles and hanging lanterns strung out along the area, affixed to rock formations.[break][break]

though there are a few other patrons, the distance between them is more than enough to give them their much-needed privacy.[break][break]

All the soothing reassurances in the world couldn't dissuade the suspicion that had taken hold of her, born of years of tired cynicism and realism.[break][break]

She didn't know what she'd expected from MATIAS SILPH, but it hadn't been this.[break][break]

Elisabeth hesitated as she glanced at the twinkling lanterns and low-lit candles of this outdoor space, unable to suppress her apparent surprise at the prepared table for them both.[break][break]

Something like this took a certain amount of foresight that she hadn't anticipated from him; he'd always seemed impulsive to her, the sort to force others to deal with the consequences of his ill-conceived actions.[break][break]

None of this matched the mental image of him she'd built up in her head. It startled her.[break][break]

Her hands clasped in front of her as she looked up at him, strangely lost for words.[break][break]

"You've never called me that before," she said finally, taking her seat. "Elisa, that is."

the other Elisabeth Fiorelli, the one from a distant universe and the one he had lost told him once that she preferred it, and so he assumes it'd be the same for her.

She fiddled absently with a loose curl of blonde hair, attempting to focus her distracted attention on the menu. How many people still considered her 'Elisa' now? Precious few, she thought.[break][break]

Without realizing it, hearing her childhood nickname brought a soft smile to her lips. She'd quietly missed being that name.[break][break]

"Do you have a name you like to be called?" she asked then, looking over the menu at him. "Besides Matias, and not 'The Volatile.' Something that conveys closeness or familiarity."[break][break]

He seemed the type to have a nickname wholly unrelated to his own name, but she couldn't place why she thought so.

he shakes his head, not needing to look through the menu as he already knows what he wants, so his gaze never strays far from Elisabeth Fiorelli.[break][break]

"people used to call me matty."[break][break]

but that name has been soiled by different parties, namely KING WAYLAND and other rocket operatives who used it to taunt and goade him, not realizing that he doesn't care much for it. he does miss the familiarity of it, however, and it brings an odd sense of nostalgia back.[break][break]

"i don't think i'd mind being called that by you, but matias is also fine."[break][break]

he knows he wouldn't mind because it's what she called him in another universe.

Why was this so funny to her? A fit of giggles threatened to burst out of her at the sound of the unexpectedly boyish nickname, and she took a quick drink of water to silence them before they could escape.[break][break]

"I feel like I'm scolding you if I call you that," she said in explanation. "Like you're a misbehaving Poochyena or something."[break][break]

Although considering their dynamic, that might apply to them both more often than not.[break][break]

Of all the things he could order, he picked a simple and nostalgic recipe from her homeland. Really?[break][break]
