That was true for her, at least.[break][break]

The waiter then leaned in, questioning in a low tone what her preferred spiciness level was, and Elisabeth met Matias's gaze with a slight frown. "Whatever your usual spiciness level is, I'm sure is fine," she replied back, though she had no idea what that might be. How spicy was spicy?[break][break]

The truth was that Elisabeth Fiorelli had never eaten curry before. However, she intended to double down on this deceit the same way he apparently intended to double down on his.[break][break]

"I guess we're both full of surprises today," she replied mildly, taking a sip of her drink.

"A Gracidea?"[break][break]

She blinked, taken aback by the gesture as he placed the dainty pink flower in her hands.[break][break]

A tiny fear overtook her for a moment that the blossom might wither at her touch, and she hesitated before she looked down, only to realize it hadn't shriveled up at all.[break][break]

Instead, the hibiscus's petals seemed oddly vibrant in the palm of her hand -- radiant with the glow of early springtime.[break][break]

"They're supposed to only bloom when you're grateful for something," she said, averting his gaze as she studied the mythical blossom. She tucked it finally behind her ear, brushing back her golden hair with the motion. There was something peculiarly vulnerable in the gesture, but she couldn't place her finger on why.[break][break]

This moment echoed another distant memory, though she couldn't quite place that feeling either, not so many years later.[break][break]

"Are you?" she asked, her eyes flitting up to meet his, wavering with slight uncertainty. "Grateful, I mean."

She struggled to believe him, sometimes. What puzzled her the most was how earnest he was -- how simple, as he put it.[break][break]

Why should he, or anyone else, enjoy her company? Time spent with her was never worth much.[break][break]

Her hand drifted from the flower to toy with a loose curl of hair, winding it around a finger as a nervous laugh fluttered out of her.[break][break]

"I don't think I've done much to be grateful for," she deflected, attempting to feign a more playful tone with him than she felt. "But it's been a pleasant evening so far, hasn't it?"[break][break]

Unbeknownst to her, the hibiscus she wore shyly curled ever-so-slightly in on itself.

It wasn't a wilting, exactly. This was more a winding back into time, a flower retreating back into that moment before full-bloom.[break][break]

"I'm not the best at assessing myself," she admitted. Her hand quietly worried at her skirt, trying to distract herself from how awkward this conversation had unexpectedly become. "I don't even know how to say what it is I'm grateful for, exactly?"[break][break]

To have some of her mind returned to her again. To feel a bit more human again.[break][break]

Suddenly her hand ceased in its restless moveents, and she felt what she wanted to say come back to her with slow-dawning clarity.[break][break]

"Would you believe me if I said I'm grateful that I can feel gratitude at all again?"

"What good will that do?" she blurted out, utterly perplexed by his vehemence on this subject. "I don't need... that is..."[break][break]

Why was he looking at her like this? She shrank before his gaze, like being caught in the full beams of a searchlight.[break][break]

She didn't feel like someone who deserved gratitude, most of the time. She survived despite all the reasons she shouldn't. She existed despite all the unhappiness that came with existing. She remained powerful despite the unthinkable costs of what made her powerful.[break][break]

Finally she closed her eyes, inhaling deeply in an attempt to silence her inner discomfort.[break][break]

Elisabeth let the sea distract her from the puzzle of him, studying the way the rays of moonlight glimmered on blue-black glass instead. Her expression softened as a whirling, salt-kissed breeze teased out ringlets of her hair.[break][break]

She brushed a few of the loose strands out of her eyes, and she bit her lip.[break][break]

"My father used to say something. That you could always find light in the darkest of places, if you knew where to look."[break][break]

The stars overhead twinkled faintly, sleepily blinking into view as night hung the heaviness of its dark curtain around them both. Above them, a misty cloud draped across the light of a full moon.[break][break]

"Sometimes I've gotten tired of looking for that light. Sometimes it's easier to simply get attuned to feeling your way through the darkness."[break][break]

A peacefulness settled over her features then, and she turned back to him, the Gracidea subtly brightening as she did so.[break][break]

"But yes. I am grateful for what light I've found, I think. Whether or not it lasts for very long."[break][break]

It never did. Perhaps that was what made it so valuable, in the end.

the way the gracidea subtly brightens is not missed. he has seen the oppposite happen, not just tonight but before, remembering how she had blighted the vegetation with such ease. so the brightening gracidea is a welcome sight, one he spends a moment appreciating with a smile.[break][break]

"you know that light needs to be nurtured, too. maybe that's why it's never lasted for long."[break][break]
