Area Zero Excursion C: Cull the Horde (Tying up Loose Ends)

This was, by far, the strangest time to be a part of Team Rocket. Not only did other Rockets have problems with the scourge of Iron Bundles, but they were a problem for everyone. Evidenced by the reports of scouts never coming back– frozen solid or submerged in water with several holes in their chests. Red and Yellow.

So, Grigori decided to (and was told to) deal with the problem once and for all. Down in the depths of the tunnel system was their home. But he’d been allied with a rather peculiar partner. The air between them couldn’t be thicker with tension as they traversed the caves of Area Zero.

None other than Cillian Quinn led the way, careful not to touch any Tera crystals that sprouted from the walls like flowers. Their last meeting was still fresh in the grunt’s mind. How contentious it was. How awful he felt afterward. He hadn’t forgotten the moment, and he had a suspicion that the Underboss hadn’t either.

“If reports are correct, Mr. Quinn,” Grigori cleared his throat and stepped around a bright blue crystal, “then we should be close to the source of the creatures.”

Now wasn’t the time to let petty squabbles and personal vendettas get in the way of their mission. They needed to be on the same page. Work together. Otherwise, they’d be washed away by the tide. “Perhaps we should strategize a little. Create a game plan. What do you think would work best against the large amount of mechanical machines?”

Scizor was a rather violent and efficient one. Perfect for the massive amount of slaughter they’d need to perform. He knew that Cillian controlled had a rather significant Pokémon in his possession, but he also didn’t know their relationship. How often he liked to utilize it.

“Area attacks might work best, but speed could cover any holes in a single-target assault.”

The sour notes of their last encounter sit foul in the back of his throat, but Cillian is nothing if not professional. Rocket came first, no matter what, and he would not let this cloud his judgement when it came to such a serious mission.[break][break]

"I'm afraid my best large-scale coverage won't hold up well against their heavy usage of Water and Ice. My shadows are strong, however, and the miasma makes them quick. Evasive."[break][break]

He releases a Luxray, whose ordinarily blue fur is instead deep purple. [break][break]

"I'm afraid it won't work on yours, though. What are you thinking?"

Luxray would work well on the partial-Water types that they’d be going up against. Grigori released his own first choice for a combatant, a Scizor with violence on the mind and a love for clicking its pincers together. The gentle taps filled the small cave, like someone with ADHD who held a pen.

“Scizor has been performing very well, my last few run-ins. I’m confident we’ll be able to perform adequately,” the grunt said. The odds of them directly competing with the likes of Cillian were not high, but this wasn’t a competition. They just needed to thin the herd, so to speak. Prevent these dangerous creatures from causing more problems.

They could only pray and hope it worked.

And they’d soon find out, too. As they went further into the cave, a particular noise got louder. The whine of machinery and splashes of water filled the space, and Scizor finally stopped its incessant clacks. At the very end was an entrance, and Grigori peeked inside.

Dozens upon dozens of red-white-and-blue Pokémon filled the space, doing various things. Some fought with one another, others sat in the corner with unlit eyes. A few ran around the open space, or from entrance to entrance. It was like a nest, except the creatures that inhabited it were soulless, lifeless hell spawn hellbent on the death of anything that wasn’t them.

The weight of his Rocket Insignia, tucked inside his suit pocket, felt twice as heavy. “The sources were correct. All that's left is to eliminate the threat. How do you wish to proceed?”

Undisguised approval settles on Cillian's features as the Scizor was released; if Grigori knew even a small amount about Cillian Quinn beyond his rank and reputation, perhaps he'd know the underboss had specialized in Steel-types before growing his shadowed horde.[break][break]

Grigori asks for direction, and Cillian clicks his tongue gently to stay the Luxray's aggression. She seems eager to go on the prowl, obsidian claws digging into the damp earth and jaws parted to scent the air.[break][break]

"If your Scizor buffs up before an assault, do so now. As soon as you're ready, I'll signal Scathach to start picking off targets."[break][break]

Sounded like Luxray and Scizor were two sides of the same coin. It’s all Grigori can guess while Cillian clicked his tongue (his favorite method of communication, it seemed) to stay the Luxray’s actions. He knew it all too well; the Scizor had its habit, and he’d been unsuccessful in trying to calm it. Just how it was.

This also means they’re in good, capable hands with their selection of Pokémon. Scizor nodded at Cillian’s suggestion and quickly did a little jig. A Swords Dance, more akin to a pre-celebration celebration. As if the odds of their success were one hundred percent. The grunt hoped this wouldn’t be their downfall.

But he gave the Underboss a short nod. No point in waiting around. If anything, it prevented the Iron Bundle from potentially coming out of their dank home and surprising them instead. Thus, their assault began in earnest.

With any luck, it wouldn’t turn around on them in a horrific manner.

Cillian recognizes, appreciates, the energy that thrums through the Scizor as it prepares for battle. It was the same energy, if less intense, that often took hold of the underbosses Shadow Pokémon. They were made for the slaughter, reveled in it.[break][break]

Scathach is no different. As soon as Cillian clicks his tongue again, signals for her to move, she leaps into the cave with a furious yowl.[break][break]

The Iron Bundle aren't expecting the sudden interruption. Who knows how long they've lived down here, undisturbed? The SCARY FACE of the Luxray catches one of them off guard, and she capitalizes on its slow response with a WILD CHARGE.[break][break]

Cillian's SHADOW MIASMA swells to encompass her. Under its spell, they're faster than they should be. Quicker to react.[break][break]

Stronger.

Was the grunt ever glad that Cillian was not his opponent, but instead his ally. Grigori watched with careful eyes as the duo began their assault upon the group of mechanical death traps. Brutally efficient in the way they dismantled the machines one by one.

While the Luxray darted around and tackled them with dangerous Wild Charges, the Scizor surgically removed heads and limbs with steely Bullet Punches. Together, the initial horde of Iron Bundle was decimated. Especially with the help of the ominous Shadow Miasma.

While robotic parts and attacks unfurled in front of him, Grigori stepped away from the opening, “Things look to be going smoothly so far. How many do you think are inside this one cave, Mr. Quinn?”

Truth be told, Grigori had a strange feeling inside his chest. One that said there would be some sort of complication to their assault. Things were never as they seemed, and this seemed too easy.

Grigori nervously peeked back into the chaos of the assault. Some of the Iron Bundle had wised up as they came out of their burrows. Water and Ice stared to fly around the enclose area, but that was to be expected. No, the bigger thing was…

“Mr. Quinn, why does it look like they haven’t made a dent in the horde?”

Gazing into the mouth of the cave, having seen it lit only in brief flashes of lightning, the underboss shakes his head.[break][break]

"Hard to say. It could plunge down for miles, or this could be it."[break][break]

That was the problem with such a vast, unexplored landscape. You just didn't know. And as a scientist, Cillian was well and truly familiar with admitting the gaps in his own knowledge.[break][break]

But he could tell one thing for sure:[break][break]

"Because they haven't."[break][break]

His Luxray VOLT SWITCHES as she's been instructed to do when overwhelmed, a brilliant nova of energy briefly illuminating a horde that seems to have grown, not shrunk.[break][break]

As he always did when faced with greater threat, Cillian reaches for the Beast Ball at his hip, and for his patron in turn. He feels it turn to a heavy weight in his grasp, and pitches it into the air. Her shadow engulfs them.[break][break]

And then it moves, twisting into a cyclone, the SHADOW STORM howling violently through the mouth of the cave.[break][break]

"Once we take care of them, we'll need to survey the cave. Maybe block up the tunnels, until we can get a team down here to do a more thorough geological survey."

Oh no. Even Cillian’s Pokemon knew better than to test fate, the way they Volt Switched out of the fray. If he was going to do that, then he’d need to get serious too. Especially if the Underbosses next choice was THAT beast. A great, monstrous thing that causes a great stir in the cave. Iron Bundle, little more than sacks of potatoes, get thrown around.

“Scizor, I think it’s time!” Grigori pulled a band out of his pocket. A Mega Band, which twinkled brightly as he tapped into its power. Soon enough, a transformation occurred within the red bug; his claws doubled in length, and he adopted a fierce visage of ‘armor’. Additional protection for his metal carapace.

The transformation didn’t take long before the Scizor became Mega, and even deadlier by default. Despite the constant water and ice moves, a heat started to fill the enclosed space. The grunt knew he could only maintain the form for so long until he melted into a steel puddle.

“Please target their burrows! We need to stem the tide,” Grigori called out. Scizor nodded– now wasn’t the time to increase his kill count. He snapped his claws on any Iron Bundle in the way, until he reached the first burrow that they stemmed from. A crushing Close Combat crumbled the stone, which shortly collapsed in on itself. One down… who knew how many to go.

Like plugging holes in a sinking ship.

But as the winds whipped and jostled the machines, living and dead, Grigori saw something strange: deep prints in the floor of the cave. When did those get there? He quickly pointed to them, “Mr. Quinn, do you see those? They seem awfully larage for an Iron Bundle…”

Large as she was, Lugia could not fit into the mouth of the den. Neither did Cillian wish to risk endangering the Scizor as it moves deeper within, shattering one of the burrows with an impressive display of force.[break][break]

He did not often command her as he would his other Pokémon. She had her own agency... but she was a force of destruction, of storms. He knows her intent when the warm winds of spring cut begin to build beneath her wings.[break][break]

"Keep them off the Scizor!"[break][break]

Red eyes fix upon him for a moment, PRESSURE intensifying beneath her glare. But the Guardian must sense the urgency in his tone, the anxiety through their psychic link, and the winds die down as she instead summons the might of her Seas to their defense.[break][break]

A WHIRLPOOL forms in the cave's center, drawing in the Iron Bundle and giving the Scizor space to breathe. To act. To destroy.[break][break]

"I see them," Cillian affirms of the prints, tensing as a cry echoes from deep below. "And I think I hear what's making them."[break][break]

“Then I pray that the beast responsible does not keep it up,” Grigori said as the whirlpool began to sweep away the riffraff. A welcome reprieve; several had been ready to blast the beefed-up insect into watery dust. This let him Close Combat yet another piece of wall and another opening crumbled to rubble.

Slowly, but surely, Scizor made progress. Hole after hole was destroyed, and the progress made by the Beast’s Shadow Lugia started to matter. Even if it seemed upset by Cillian’s command to support the insect.

But Grigori knew the true problem that lay with the scenario: there were a lot more burrows than they could’ve ever predicted, and the heat build-up started to show. Thanks to the sudden flow of water that splashed the walls, they could all see the steady supply of steam that bubbled on its carapace. And it only grew more violent, the sizzle audible across the cave as he continued his mad dash to the finish line.

Would he cross, or would he melt into the floor before he could accomplish the task? Hard to say, but Grigori didn’t like the possibility. Something tugged in his heart, a primal fear seldom felt.

“Scizor, please don’t push yourself!”

“SCIZOR SCIZOR!” The bug didn’t even spare his trainer a glance. For he only had one thought on his mind: get the job done. He was a proud Team Rocket Pokémon, and he’d not fall in the clear view of Underboss Cillian. Another Close Combat destroyed another burrow. His muscles protested, but he dashed to the next one with determation in his eyes. Only a couple more left…

“Mr. Cillian, almost there! Just a little further…” he said. For the Underboss, or for himself? He clutched the left side of his shirt tight, enough to turn his knuckles as white as the underbelly of the Shadow Pokémon. “Please work, please work…”

Beneath the suffocating PRESSURE of Lugia's presence, the tension is nigh unbearable. Her avatar conceals it well beneath the practice of a hundred battles, a thousand close calls, but like Grigori Sokolov, his muscles are rigid with concern.[break][break]

No healing would grant Scizor the strength it required to push on. MEGA EVOLUTION went beyond such bounds. And Cillian, who did not often utilize it due to its incompatibility with Shadows, had left his EXTENDERS elsewhere.[break][break]

No. Scizor's ability to succeed remained in its pincers.[break][break]

Lugia aids where she can. ICY WINDS slow the movements of the steel bug's pursuers, turning their favoured elements against them.[break][break]

Situated near the mouth of the den, Cillian notes long gashes in packed ice. They resembled almost the marks of a sword upon a training dummy, the likes of which he barely recalled in a half-forgotten memory of a place that hadn't been real.[break][break]

He doesn't dwell on it.[break][break]

"If we must, we'll bring the whole place down." His tone is grim. It would mean sacrificing the knowledge of what might lurk beneath. "I hope it doesn't come to that."[break][break]

The winds begin to respond to the beating of Lugia's wings, the makings of a HURRICANE...[break][break]

Three more. Something howled, far away. Its cry filled the area Grigori and Cillian occupied. The grunt could only register the sound as a distraction, and those held no place here. His eyes trained on the red, sizzling metal that ran faster and faster. White steam filled the cavern rapidly now, and turned the room into a deadly sauna.

Two more. Icy winds helped keep the heat off of Scizor, but it could not take the heat from his exoskeleton. Ice quickly melted on his skin and fueled the creation of even more steam. Wisps of white obscured their vision while the chaos continued to unfold. “Come on… come on…”

One more. Scizor breathed heavily now. Even through the thick of the evaporation and dismantling of dozens of war machines, his labored breaths pushed through to the trainer's ears. Grigori knew what was happening– and he cupped his hands around his mouth. “SCIZOR, RETREAT! WE CAN DESTROY THE CAVE, GET OUT OF THERE!”

One more. Just one more. All he needed to do was put one leg in front of the other, flap his wings, and pull his pincer back.

Just as one last Iron Bundle poked its head from the stone, his claws sunk into the hard rock and tore it down upon its head. The crash filled the cave, now more rubble than stone by this point. There were still plenty of Iron Bundle, but there would be no more reinforcements.

Now, to slaughter them all.

Winds whipped, and Scizor, in all hiss battered glory, covered in ghostly pale white from the rapid evaporation, raised his claws again. Winds whipped across his shell, and he stood strong. Rockets did not back down from nothing. Not even a beast like Shadow Lugia, one that did not care if he was in the crossfire.

"Scizor!"

Quiet admiration for the Scizor burns in Cillian's gaze. Though no words are exchanged between them, Lugia's HURRICANE winds transition into something softer, and it begins to RAIN. The air tastes of a storm's aftermath.[break][break]
