"a mission?" ashton echoed tilting his head like a questioning lillipup, his expression was one of mild confusion. but it quickly broke out into a wide, mischievous, grin. "finally some actual WORK!" he all but cheered at the idea of finally getting out and doing something! he wanted to show what he could do! and he couldn't do that just sitting around in the stupid submarine all day!

the mission-giver told him something about having someone watch him while he did his job, but ash had long since stopped paying attention. more than happy to get going. he was getting antsy and he needed to get rid of some of this pent up energy. he was more excited to do something he was good at! stealing things from unwitting idiots! and those "things" happened to be pokemon!

so here he was, on route 123 - trying to catch a glimpse of any wayward trainers who happened to leave themselves vulnerable. his mask in hand to hide his identity so the trainers couldn't tag him, at least for now.

he had his trusty bat on him, who he named 'lil' slugger'. which was useless against pokemon but was really nice to use on uncooperative humans! "right... wait, wasn't i supposed to meet someone here?" he questioned aloud, finally remembering this was a team mission.

He fiddled with the Pokeball he pulled from his belt within his hands and pressed the release button. The Zoroark appeared as he nodded at it, pointing to an unsuspecting duo of trainers as the fox pokemon got the idea and utilized its illusion powers to befuddle them.

The one trainer stumbled terrified as the other one reacted by ordering its Pokemon to attack. However, Ash would end up behind said trainer and slam into their skull with the metal bat.

Out from the shadows leapt out Garou, his Zoroark which slammed down at the poison Pokemon with a Night Slash, knocking out the confused and dazed Drapion.

The grey haired Rocket would then take the Pokeball that once belonged to the Trainer and recalled it. Before adding it to his belt. "One down." Hah! That went off without a hitch! But wait... Where did the second trainer go?

He arches his brow as Ashton swings the bat through the air, the soft woosh blending with the wind through the trees. As his golden gaze settles on the unsuspecting duo's approach, Cillian steps back into the sanctuary of the copse.[break][break]

By the time the SHADOW MIASMA creeps across the trail, they're already reeling under the Zoroark's spell.[break][break]

A sharp whistle cuts through the air, a click of Cillian's tongue seemingly directing his Lycanroc. It lets out a terrifying howl, its SHADOW DOWN slashing defenses as it buries the VAROOM beneath a ROCK SLIDE.[break][break]

Cillian, too, has noticed the trainer's attempt to escape. Moving faster than any human should, he cuts her off with a patient, predatory smile.[break][break]

"I wouldn't."[break][break]

The werewolf looms behind her, paws burning with FIRE in threat of a PUNCH. Cillian can feel the heat of it as he holds out his hand. She looks at him with suspicion, as if unsure whether he's offering to help her up or expecting something from her.[break][break]

"Your Pokémon, unless you'd like to end up like your friend." He'd prefer not to go that route, but Ashton's aggressive approach had set them on a certain course. "Your phone, too."[break][break]

His ROTOM sweeps her for any further technology as Cillian pockets the phone, zipping back into Cillian's own when it finds nothing of interest.[break][break]

"Do you make a career of assaulting random strangers, or is this a special occasion?"[break][break]

Cillian glances to @ashton as the girl runs off, uncontested. They were far enough away from civilization that it'd be a while before she got any help.

"well, it's how i did things back home. why waste time with a pokemon battle when i can just finish a fight before it starts?" a part of him knew the answer to his question. but he wasn't in the mood to confront it. instead he shrugged a bit as he took off his mask.

he asked genuinely curious, only to feel something crawl on his shoulder... a spinarak. and not just a spinarak, but a shiny one. it must've crawled on him when he didn't notice. his zoroark reacted quickly and batted off ash's shoulder, knocking the spider pokemon to the ground as it writhed. only to get up really irritated. his zoroark didn't pause and used a night slash on the small bug pokemon, knocking it out. as ash blinked.

not one to take a gift ponyta to the mouth, he threw an empty pokeball at it. guess it was lucky day today! "what would you prefer i do? got any tips, boss?" it was a big change from petty small time gang to international crime syndicate and ash found the transition a jarring. he didn't know how the big wigs at rocket did things. but it wasn't like he was adverse to learnin'.

Back home. Cillian wonders where that is, for Ashton.[break][break]

Circhester's cold mountain air and old architecture come to mind, filling the underboss with a bitter nostalgia chased down by the acrid tang of Kanto's smoke and violence.[break][break]

"I don't recall engaging in a battle."[break][break]

No; Cillian leveraged the strength and fearsome nature of his Pokémon, as well as his own infamous reputation, to his advantage. It wasn't something everyone could do. He understood as much. Yet when Ashton inquires after his advice, Cillian is honest.[break][break]

His Lycanroc engages a Malamar without need for his intervention, allowing him to speak freely.[break][break]

"Rocket cares for profit and results. But that doesn't mean we can't encourage efficiency." He shrugs. "Kill someone, and you can't later extort them further." The trainer on the ground wasn't necessarily deceased, but Cillian didn't like their chances after taking a metal bat to the skull. "Draw the attention of the League, you invite complications. As underboss, he saw his fair share of paperwork. It exhausted him.[break][break]

"Try a subtler approach." Another shrug. "Or, if that doesn't suit you, lean into it. Take the jobs that'll be glad of violence."[break][break]

The Malamar falls, but Cillian only steps over its unconscious form. He'd never liked them.

ash hesitated for a moment. trying to think a little bit ahead. a mischievous grin spread across his face as he beckoned his zoroark to his side. the foxian pokemon leaned down as ashton whispered in its ear before it too smiled wickedly and nodded.

the creature would vanish under an illusion as it cloaked itself to blend in with its surroundings. before sneaking up on a trainer with their pokeball next to them. unleashing a wild demonic cackle the trainer jumped up and looked around in terror and fright before a miasma with a terrifying face began to take form in front of them.

the illusory being twisted and contorted before taking on various body parts of different pokemon. looking like an unholy frankenstein. the trainer would scream and flee. leaving it's defenseless pokeball to be picked up by an amused ashton. who knew that fucking with people was more fun than beating their kneecaps!

ashton would look expectantly at Cillian as though expecting praise like some sort of eager puppy. whether he got it didn't matter though. he was just curious at the man's reaction. ashton wasn't stupid, he just didn't care to use the brain that arceus blessed him with.

he could be cunning and intelligent, but that would take too much effort most of the time. in the end, ash wanted to prove himself. to his superiors. prove that he was useful and a good asset to rocket. that they didn't make a mistake by getting him.

fatherless behavior? perhaps. maybe he really was an overgrown child looking for recognition by others. but that didn't stop him from wanting to do his best. money, power, that was all great and all. and he'd do everything to achieve it for team rocket. but at the end of the day, ash was simply looking for a 'home'. and team rocket... well, they came into his life at the perfect moment for him.
