“It shouldn’t be far away now,” he muttered aloud, half to himself as he turned the touchpad in his hand. The screen swiveled around, defeating his purpose in trying to see the map from another angle.[break][break]
“I think..?” Lam grimaced, offering it over to the other, much more capable man. Though Lam had come quite a long way from the panicked, fumbling trainer that Gunner likely remembered from the conflict Ultra Deep Sea, he hadn’t become any better with maps or directions.[break][break]
Well, at least they had a map this time. And they weren’t stumbling around in the dark. He certainly didn’t feel lost, though they might have been a bit too far west of the mark that’s stamped in bright green on the screen.[break][break]
The glow of tera crystals embedded and climbing up the walls cast a glow over them. The pristinely white feathers of his altaria’s wings looked like they had been tie-dyed.[break][break]
“At least I don’t think we’re far off the mark…” he was consoling himself more than Gunner. He watched the tunnel ahead of them as it continued to wind onward. Keen to spot any ominous, unblinking unown eyes.

Taking the tablet from Lam, Gunner turned it around so it was right side up. Years of working in intelligence had taught him how to read maps, so when his eyes scanned the screen, he understood at once where they had to go. [break][break]

"This way." [break][break]

He led Lam and their Pokémon down the tunnels toward their destination. Tera crystals glittered ominously above them, reflecting the full spectrum of colors in their sharp facets. [break][break]

Eventually, the tunnel opened to a wider chamber. The men stood upon a ledge at the top of a winding slope. Below them was an encampment with buildings of unfamiliar construction. Figures moved throughout the base of operations: ones that looked human, and ones that did not. [break][break]

"There it is," Gunner said in hushed tones, crouching to avoid being seen. Beside him, his Scizor tensed in anticipation of a fight. "What's the plan?" [break][break]

“Better you leading than me,” he remarked with a short laugh, relieved that someone knew how to follow coordinates. And sure enough, Gunner put them right back on track.[break][break]
Lam stooped as well, pointing at the tablet again. “There’s a generator on the left side of the main building. We take that out, we dismantle the power grid and halt operations. They’ll have to regroup to a different base.”[break][break]
Peering over the edge again, he followed the gridwork of the buildings below. “If one of us provides coverage, the other can focus on taking the generator offline.”[break][break]
His birdwatching binoculars had been hung around his neck, and now he lifted them to his face to squint through the lens.[break][break]
“Place is littered with unown, though.” The little black letters hovered about, dotting the cavern rather than forming a chain outright. So it was just a matter of getting past the lackeys that were undoubtedly skulking around their ocular companions.

Lam's plan was solid, and Gunner had a plan for getting past the Unown, too. As surreptitiously as possible, he opened a Pokéball taken from his belt. His Zoroark appeared between him and Lam. [break][break]

"Hector and I will provide a distraction," the agent said, gesturing to his Scizor. "Go disable the generator, and take Mordred with you. His illusions should provide you enough cover, even against those Unown." [break][break]

The Zoroark huffed a greeting at the Gym Leader and his Pokémon. [break][break]

"I'll go first to draw their attention, then you go once it looks clear." [break][break]

Gunner set off with Hector, who immediately MEGA EVOLVED. The Pincer Pokémon unleashed a FLASH CANNON at a building on the opposite side of the camp from the generator, drawing the DRK Triad's attention. [break][break]

Immediately, the entire base erupted in noise and movement as the operatives rose up in defense. [break][break]

“Sounds good.” Lam nodded a returned greeting toward the zoroark. “We’ll back you up once we disable it.”[break][break]
Flight goggles nested in his hair, his hand passed over the keystone embedded in the thick strap. Within moments, his altaria had mega evolved as well. With a last nod toward Gunner, Lam waited until he had set off before setting off on a more direct route toward the generator.[break][break]
Under the cover of Mordred’s ILLUSION, Lam ducked behind another building—peering out when the loud blast from the scizor’s attack pulled the attention of their opposition.[break][break]
“Go, go!” Fortunately, no one seemed to notice the cloaked gym leader and his pokemon moving in the opposite direction of the chaos, rather than join the convergence upon it.
They cleared the corner of one building, then rounded another. “There—!“[break][break]
The mechanical hum of the generator rumbled outward, and he pointed toward the soft electrical glow it kicked off where it was nested in the shadow of the building.[break][break]
Mallow responded quickly. Her long neck stretched forward, beak opening to unleash a MOON BLAST that struck the generator head on. Shimmering pink energy mingled with dense smoke as the mechanics chugged and groaned before sputtering out entirely.[break][break]
Then, section by section, any light from the surrounding buildings started to go out.

DRK Triad grunts and their Unown swarmed Gunner and Hector. The Mega Scizor continued his assault, blasting away buildings and beings alike. HIDDEN POWER battered his steel carapace, doing little damage. [break][break]

Gunner fared worse, especially since he was still healing from his back injury at the beginning of the year. To compensate, he released a third Pokémon, his Iron Valiant. [break][break]

"Set up defenses here, Kahadin!" the HBIC agent shouted over the noise of battle. At once, a WIDE GUARD went up around him and his two Pokémon. [break][break]

Then came an explosion at the other end of the campsite, followed by the sudden extinguishing of all lights. Lam! He did it! Gunner realized. Pride surged through his chest. The younger man had come a long way from their encounter in the Ultra Deep Sea. [break][break]

Gunner turned to his Pokémon. "Give it your all!" [break][break]

They obeyed, launching attack after attack at the DRK Triad. [break][break]

Not today. There was nothing left to do now, but reconverge and help so that they could hopefully carve their way back out.[break][break]

“Alright, Mallow! Come in from above!” The altaria trilled and rose higher in the air. Leading the charge, she flew above the building tops as Lam and Mordred followed in her wake.[break][break]

The din of battle rose up around them, and suddenly they burst upon the scene. His altaria cried out again, the sound swelling to a shrill pitch in her throat as she unleashed a resounding DISARMING VOICE on a scattering of unown at the fringes of the conflict.

Gunner spotted Lam, Mellow, and Mordred moments before the Altaria unleashed her DISARMING VOICE. As the Unown scattered, Gunner gave Lam a swift nod of approval and a thumbs up. [break][break]

And then, as the battle reached a fever pitch, a small, sparkling figure zoomed into the chamber from one of the tunnels. From its body launched an impressive beam of sunlight—DOOM DESIRE—that sliced through the DRK Triad operatives and the surrounding buildings. [break][break]

"Back up! Back up!" Gunner shouted as one nearby buckled on its supports. He retreated some distance, his Pokémon following suit. [break][break]

A glint of light from above caught his eye. Looking up, he recognized the small figure that had entered the fray: the Jirachi under the League's protection. It spun in the air for a moment, then took off, disappearing back into the shadows. [break][break]

The thumbs up was swiftly returned in Gunner’s direction once Lam spotted him. Unown continued to circle, the random fire of HIDDEN POWER filling the space.[break][break]

It was the appearance of Jirachi that turned the tide with more finality. As DOOM DESIRE sliced through the horde of DRK Triad operatives. Familiar with the Wishmaker from his time spent with freya morningstar, his eyes sought out the small creature before it spun away.[break][break]

For a moment, he thought he met its eye, but he did, Jirachi gave no indication.[break][break]

“Think we better split before they regroup!” he called out to Gunner. His hand rose to his mouth to whistle. It summoned Mallow back to his side, so that he could slip on the mega altaria’s back.[break][break]

He looked to the agent again, ready to offer a lift if needed.

Gunner grasped Lam's extended hand and hauled himself onto the Mega Altaria's back. Then he recalled all of his Pokémon, returning them to the safety of their Pokéballs. [break][break]

As Mellow flew them from the site of the encampment, he glanced back over his shoulder. As buildings crumbled to the cavern floor, the agents of the DRK Triad blinked out of sight. From what he knew, they were teleporting back to safety. [break][break]

They, too, had to recuperate after a loss. [break][break]

Gunner faced forward again and clapped Lam on the shoulder. "Good work back there, Logan," the agent said, meaning it. "We make a good team." [break][break]
