Eddie lingered near the outpost, leaning against some bit of flimsy fencing that had been constructed along its perimeter. Even after a day spent driving off whatever threats still lingered in this place, he felt some restless energy that compelled him to extend his vigil. Maybe it was just the warm weather of this prehistoric place emboldening him with ancient vigor. Maybe Achilles was starting to rub off on him. [break][break]

In any case, he watched the nearby treeline warily, his gaze only leaving it long enough to make sure that the Gouging Fire was still at his side. The next creature that aimed to take this outpost down was in for a world of hurt.

A green snout poked out from the greenery beyond, and Eddie chuckled when he saw the tottering Appletun sniff the air with curiosity. The Gouging Fire next to him remained at ease; it was obvious to both of them that the pastry-shaped dragon posed no threat, [break][break]

“Oh shit, that reminds me,” Eddie suddenly mumbled to himself as he grabbed his smartphone. [break][break]

Achilles watched him curiously as his trainer typed himself a reminder to grab some more of his own Appletun's favored produce. It was kinda funny how the smallest and most laid-back of Eddie's Pokemon also turned out to be the pickiest.

The next creature that came stomping out of the woods was far larger and more imposing. Even before he looked up, Eddie recognized the heavy footfalls of the Aggron emerging from the trees, [break][break]

“Eyes up, Achilles. Don't know if they're gunnin' for the outpost, but we prob'ly oughta scare 'em off.” [break][break]

The Gouging Fire snarled in agreement and bounded toward the wayward kaiju. The species was strong, and tough as hell from Eddie's own experience, but they weren't entirely indomitable. A decisive DRAGON RUSH and the element of surprise was all it took for the metal Goliath to be sent stumbling back towards it's own territory.

And with that, it was just about time for Eddie to start heading back home. Achilles returned to his side, a little weary from the day's efforts, and stopped to lick at one of his paws as he settled back at his trainer's side, [break][break]

“C'mon bud,” Eddie muttered affectionately as he reached down to ruffle the Gouging Fire's thick mane, “You wanna grab some dinner on the way home? Think there's a McPognalds back in Petalburg.” [break][break]

Before the Pokemon could voice their opinion the matter, a final challenger emerged from the treeline, and Eddie's gaze suddenly shot up to assess whatever threat was coming for them. Whatever it was, it was noisy, carrying with it hollow drumming sounds like sticks rapping against tree bark. As it turned out, that's exactly what the sound was, when Eddie noticed the Thwackey rapidly rolling its makeshift drumsticks against a hollow log, [break][break]

“Huh. Seems harmless enough; right, Achilles?” [break][break]

The Gouging Fire hissed low in reply, agitation evident on his leonine face. Eddie recalled the paradox Pokemon to his ball to spare him further annoyance as he carefully departed. Maybe the little monkey would prove to be an annoyance, but maybe the noise would be just as much of a deterrent to other wild Pokemon as it had proved to be for Achilles.
