Arms crossed, Alison stood next to THEO BECKETT with a questioning disposition. She wouldn’t deny that his presence was chilling. She had read about his endeavours, the cold-blooded history that ran through his veins like poisoned ink. She had been sceptical of the rumours at first, as always with gossip, but with him now towering over her, ominous and stoic, her perspective was quickly revised.

“Right,” she said steadily, shrugging off her coat to reveal a black pirouette skort and scoop necked sports top. Style first, as always, even in the presence of an underboss.

She stared at the volterb lined in front of her, sparking as if to imminently SELF-DESTRUCT. Surveying the scene, she pursed her lips with unease. Surely not? She snuck a quick look at him through her peripheral vision.

“What is this exactly?” she said, hopeful it wasn’t what she thought.

though not a loud advocate for style, the underboss has always been one to dress well himself. even now, as he oversees a physical and rigorous training session, he dresses more for style than utility, his form-fitting white shirt, smart black tie, and slim pants and dress shoes communicating as much.[break][break]

Her agility?

Alison tried not to noticeably grimace, looking between the panels beneath the voltorb as her fears were confirmed with each blink. Crap. This was going to blemish her skin. She should have worn longer sleeves.

Walking up closer to the course, she retied her shoe laces, threw her hair back in a pony tail, and let out a deep breath. Even if she didn’t want to do this, she had a feeling Theo wouldn’t take no for an answer.

“So, jumping from one panel to the other. I assume, preferably without the the voltorb exploding?” She asked in clarification, a final attempt to stall. Pushing down every ounce of anxiety, she knelt into a starting position as if to sprint.

“Tell me when to begin.”

With a final deep breath, she nodded and kicked off. Her trainers squeaked on the floor as she ran, Alison reaching the first panel faster than she wanted. Her years of performing had made her fairly athletic, but avoiding voltorb was going to be a different ball game.

The first panel felt easy, her core managing to keep her steady. Leaping to the next, she felt the vibration of the voltorb beneath her feet, causing her balance to waver for a moment. Looking over at Theo briefly, she composed herself and proceeded to the next. And the next.

Don’t SELF-DESTRUCT. Don’t SELF-DESTRUCT. Don’t-

Reaching the eighth panel, her ankle slipped. Landing on her knees with a thud, she looked forward towards the finish, willing herself to get up. As she attempted to stand, the panel rumbled beneath her, static crawling over the edges. Her eyes widened.

Fuck.

She heard the explosion before she felt it.

thankfully for the young performer-turn-grunt, the SELF-DESTRUCT is controlled, designed not to kill but to hurt. the bright flash is accompanied by flames that singe; again, not potent enough to scar, but just enough to dissuade them from making the same mistake again.[break][break]

when the flames die down, the underboss is standing beside her with a bayleef by his side. a HEAL PULSE looks to ease the pain.[break][break]

The bayleef’s HEAL PULSE allows Alison to catch her breath, her legs wobbling as she stands. Her limbs now scorched with black, she tries to ignore the dull ache that ripples across her skin. While not fatal, she wouldn’t deny that it hurt.

Hearing the underboss’ command, she finds herself again at the starting line. Crouching down into the same starting position as before, she stares at the floor, unable to will herself to move. Now knowing her fate if she wasn’t to reach the finish line again, her body was tense. Fearful.

“How many times do I have to do this?” She asks, regretting the question as soon as it was uttered.

She turns her face away from him as he approaches.

“I’m not.”

Her lie was barely audible. Even though simple, the explosive element of the course had left her heart pounding. She hadn’t realised until the smoke had covered her eyes how the memory of her final performance lingered beneath her skin. How a simple spark from a voltorb could take her back to a moment she spent everyday repressing. Back to sparking lights and a blaze of fire.

She needed to get this over with.

“The explosion just… Startled me more than I thought. I’ll try again.”

“I’ll repress it until this is over. It’ll just – make it harder otherwise.”

It felt strange to hear a man she believed to be phlegmatic and ruthless offer support in response to her anxiety. While seemingly in good faith, she couldn’t help feeling uneasy. Training with a side of a therapy with an underboss? She wasn’t sure how she felt about that.

“You say that, but performing doesn’t usually include traversing across exploding Voltorb,” she responds coolly, shooting him a sharp look. Performing, while difficult, didn't normally leave her seared.

Remembering who she was talking to, Alison quickly turns to look back at the course, regaining her composure. Stretching out her fingertips pressed into the floor, she waits patiently for his next words, anticipating kicking off once more.

the only difference is the consequence of underperforming. instead of boos and judgment, she'd be met with pain and scrutiny; the recovery time far differs as well. in that sense, he supposes her anxieties make sense.[break][break]

without warning, he nudges a leg into her to push her forward onto the first panel. he doesn't bother taking a step back; mutual demise, as they say.

“I’m not – ” before she can finish her sentence, a shove in her back makes her knees buckle and she slams into the first panel.

“What are you – ”

The VOLTORB below rattles, and Alison barely has time to react before it begins to SELF-DESTRUCT. She scrambles onto her feet, jumping to the next panel as the VOLTORB behind her implodes. With every panel she leaps onto, she misses the previous SELF-DESTRUCT by seconds, her body and breath shaky from the sudden rush of adrenaline.

Not daring to look back, she focuses on her feet as she pushes forward. She knew she needed to complete it this time. If he was willing to kick her onto the course, whose to say what other measures he would take next?

Before she could register how much she had traversed, she reaches the final panels, her heart racing. Stumbling slightly at the realisation, Alison takes a breath as anxiety builds. What if she didn’t make it again? Looking at the panel beneath her, the familiar sight of static curls around her feet, and she knew she had no time to overthink. Just jump. Jump!

Leaping forward, she misses the SELF-DESTRUCT by a hair’s breadth, the explosion catching her ankles and leaving a sharp burn on her skin. Gritting her teeth, she leaps again. And again. And again. And–

She falls to the floor with a thud. Coughing and wheezing a little from the smoke she’s inhaled, Alison drags her body across the floor with her elbows. With a final exhale, she slumps onto her side, exhausted.

She’d... Done it?

She looks over at Theo with narrowed eyes, her voice barely audible.

“Bastard.”
