he comes in low and close and the water is a curtain around her face, a deft finger swiping hair behind her ear to hear his muffled words, trailing down the front of his thigh to pull attention away from their lips. 

you've no doubts, then. that we'll escape this, silph.

that more than escape, they will use this. her toxic chain bulges alongside those wrapped around the others. how many identities are unveiled here? how many secrets can be learnt with a glimpse through the mask?

his hand traces along her back, across her shoulder blades, as he soaps her in spots that he expects her to be unable to reach. much like he would a pokemon, he feels no love behind his labor. just an obligation to do so as one would care for someone under their thrall.

all passionate, good workers. her chain constricts, struggling to swell under the weight of the water, strangled by the steam. she pants doggedly as though the press of his body into her is actually accomplishing anything, words no more than sweet wiles meant for no one but themselves.

eyes turn away in the face of their flagrant fawning, but her jaw tightens, lips pressing thinly as understanding freezes her blood.

"tsu - no. she's," she gasps angrily, the hand splayed possessively over his thigh curling, nails teething flesh. it could, to many, be seen as an act of passion. "don't lie to me, fern. not here."

fernando closes his eye. he can feel the constant patter of water against him. the only soothing moment in his hellhole that allows him to ignore the pain of their daily labor. a respite he wastes on their eventual escape.

“does it matter, freya? everything i say, i do with purpose.”

he too, leans into this, resting his chin against the crook of her neck.

“do you remember when we used to get gyros with cole?”

a laugh dies in his chest. a memory unlocked only because it’s the only way he can describe when without triggering any flags. something only they share.

“we should celebrate. an anniversary. for old time's sake.”

people change. 

the initial shock does not linger, washed away by the water, swirling down the drain. her fingertips are warped with pruning and his skin is a discomfort against her, one that is getting harder to swallow. 

"so long," she murmurs. "we're not the same people, are we?"

time heals all wounds. tsubaki wouldn't betray her, couldn't betray her. not after all she's done, what she's allowed herself to be - for the league, for freya. 

"but you're right. we should celebrate all the ways we've changed."
