The reality of the situation was a bitter pill to swallow. No matter how hard he looked, no matter how hard he tried to will some bit of evidence into existence, the elusive Curator had managed to evade his grasp yet again. Eddie sighed again, shoulders suddenly slumping, and he turned back to Gideon, [break][break]

“Yeah, I suppose it's time ta cut my losses.” [break][break]

As he moved to leave the dusty basement, Eddie was suddenly struck by a thought, and his face flushed bright red with embarrassment when the thought really began to sink in. [break][break]

Oh Arceus, this poor guy probably hated his guts. Eddie had barged into the professor's place of work, lied to him at first, managed to more or less bully his way into the basement, only for there to be jack-fucking-shit down here. He had probably given the poor guy a heart attack, and he had definitely managed to make himself look like some sort of lunatic. How could he have been so thoughtless? And how the hell could he make it up to poor Gideon? [break][break]

A new thought suddenly occurred to Eddie, and he began to rummage around in his pockets for the little notepad and pen that he had brought with him but neglected to use for his wannabe detective schtick. He hastily scrawled something, ripped the note out, and cleared his throat, [break][break]

“I'm so goddamn sorry,” Eddie began sheepishly, “I, uh, realize I've sent ya on a bit of a wild goose chase.” [break][break]

He then held out the note for Gideon to take if he so desired, [break][break]

“And I need ta make it up to ya. Here; it's my number.” [break][break]

Was that weird? Oh God, this was probably weird as all hell, but Eddie couldn't just back down now, [break][break]

“If you need anythin', anythin' at all, you just give me a call,” he insisted, doubling down, “Whether you need some heavy liftin' done or a recommendation for a nice bourbon, I'm yer guy.” [break][break]

Anything to make it up to Gideon, and anything to stave off the shame that was slowly overtaking him.

Beet red wasn't quite Eduardo Hisakawa's color, but boy did it stand out against the white of his shirt. Gideon could have sworn he saw a flash of scarlet through the sheer fabric, too, though he did his best to keep his eyes level with the other man's, especially as he strode closer.[break][break]

"...it's fine." GIDEON GRAVES himself was mildly surprised by his lack of annoyance. This had certainly been an inconvenience — teetering on a waste of time — but that nagging phrase kept playing on repeat in his head. DRK TRIAD. DRK TRIAD. DRK TRIAD. [break][break]

"No harm done, in the end."[break][break]

And that was true. With Eddie's curiosity quelled, they could part ways amicably, probably to never speak again.[break][break]

Well, except for the scrap of paper being offered by an insistent hand.[break][break]

"Oh, uh," Gideon balked, momentarily unsure how to respond. He hadn't calculated for this. "Really, it wasn't—"[break][break]

Sure, he could have refused, but the word bourbon made him hesitate. What was the harm in just taking it, right? [break][break]

"...alight. Sure. I'll keep that in mind."[break][break]

Accepting Eddie's number, the professor slipped it into his cardigan pocket and then gestured for them to exit the basement. Several keycard-protected doors later and they'd returned to the lobby; in total, less than an hour had passed, though it seemed much longer.[break][break]

"By the way," Gideon added before they parted ways. "Say hi to Yuina for me the next time you talk to her. I'll be sure to mention we met."[break][break]

GIDEON GRAVES would have to verify with Yuina Higashi that Eduardo Hisakawa wasn't as odd as he seemed. Maybe get a little bit more background information from her, something to ease his mind.[break][break]

Just who had he let in his basement?[break][break]
