The farm designed by Howard, oscar clayton , and supervised by bryan delarosa when the archaeologist is busy is an Eden in a world in the process of dying. Perhaps it had died long ago. Little remained but bones, swarms of Ultra Beasts, and a hint of a spirit rushing through the clouds from time to time.

That, and the golden dunes that reminded the admin of the Desert Resort in Unova. The nostalgic feeling struck a chord.

"Nice car. I could get used to this." Howard nodded in approval from the passenger's seat. The Starmobile slipped over the sand with remarkable grace. "I haven't seen a car like this before, not that I'm much of a gearhead."

It reminded him of something that june sleigh or Navy would appreciate. A vehicle with endless capability for tinkering.

"You a gearhead, Adrian?"

They were supposed to be patrolling the vicinity, but a joyride never hurt anyone, besides a few Rabsca and Rellor they occasionally ran over.

"I hadn't either, but it caught my eye."[break][break]

They're blazing across the desert as fast as Adrian will allow, throttling the Revavroom and Varoom speeding them along to avoid clogging the supercharger with grit and silica. It's unfamiliar terrain, but the car seems suited to it. Adrian allows his hand to drift along the wheel, the leather now warm to the touch.[break][break]

"Not particularly." Adrian had expensive taste, but there were limitations to his practical knowledge. He was thankful, then, it was powered by pokemon—infinitely more manageable.[break][break]

He comes across curt. Surely they had come out here for more than a bit of limit testing.[break][break]

"...What's out here," he'd grill Howard.[break][break]

Other than a sprawling bunch of nothing.[break][break]

Adrian had been afforded sparse details until now, and although he'd have been content simply to test drive his car, he did not follow Howard here lightly. There was something else to this trip.

"Ruins, tombs, a bunch of shit that wants us dead." The admin waved a hand, dismissing Adrian's concerns. "It's Ultra Space, man. Normally I just have Oscar or Beast Delarosa do this, but they're busy and I'm..."

He gestured downwards at his frail body. Even after being pulled from death's door, the admin was still remarkably fragile. His strength still eluded him. Apparently all he needed was rest and sun, but there was no time.

War was coming. Thus they farmed.

"...me." He finished. "We're just doing patrol since there's a lot of nasty shit outside the farm. I'd feel a lot better if you were here."

He smiled at his colleague, before his face darkened.

"Stop the car."

It's the second time he's heard of Delarosa recently. Perhaps I ought to pay him a visit. It's been so long, he can hardly remember the last time they met... or the first.[break][break]

He's ripped from his nostalgia high when Howard goes grim. Skrrrt... The engine's roar becomes a low pur before tapering off. "What is it?"[break][break]

His chest felt tight suddenly. The shadows dragging at the corner of his vision begged his attention, though he could not reveal them no matter which way he turned. Paranoia set in.

A firm hand clapped Adrian on the shoulder, even as it trembled with weakness.

"Keep it together." Howard's voice was calm as he wormed out of the car. He adjusted his hat as he trekked across the sand towards a jumble of prints. "I need Adrian Malcolm right now. Conquer your fear."

The words were wise, if they didn't come from a man afraid of his own shadow. Only someone as shameless as Howard could utter such words and have them fall flat due to his own experiences, and yet Howard had experienced fear. Ting-Lu had beckoned to him, and he had denied it.

He had not been beckoned.

Sand scraped against the admin's pants as he knelt in the desert. Tracks. A lot of them. Hundreds. Thousands. All marching in a straight line, roughly the size of an interstate.

"How the fuck did we miss this while driving around?"

Breathe in, breathe out. It's enough to ease the tension alongside a reassuring touch, but he wonders what Howard saw that gave him cause to stop them so abruptly. He'd save his griping for later. There was sure to be heaps of it.[break][break]

Adrian followed suite out of the cabin.[break][break]

The scores of tracks were far more pressing. Adrian, too, isn't sure how they could've missed it; one could see the tire lines breaking up the otherwise perfect footprints. But even as they stared, the wind began to fill them in. Adrian looks to the horizon, in the direction the tracks lead, and makes a note of the cardinal heading.[break][break]

"I didn't know we were looking for anything." He hadn't meant to be too snide, but his own obliviousness had been excused.[break][break]

What even do these belong to? And where across these barren dunes were they headed?[break][break]

"You recognize these prints?"

A deep breath and a heaving sigh. A weary eye regarded the prints with the expertise of an archaeologist. Anthropology was a skip and a jump from Howard's preferred field, so he normally recognized prints with remarkable ease.

He did not recognize these.

That meant they were Ultra Beasts. Joy. Likely a Pheromosa or Buzzwole herd. The admin hadn't seen alien prints since the Three Days War had resolved. It sent a chill down his spine and made the archaeologist silently groan.

"Aliens." Howard rose and followed the tracks into the horizon. His blood ran cold. They led straight to Team Rocket's farm. "Shit."

He ran back towards the Starmobile.

"SHIT!" Howard hopped back into the passenger's seat. "GO TO THE FARM! NOW!"

Back to the car in a hurry, kicking sand out in a flurry beneath his shoes, Adrian and Howard quickly settle back into their seats before he shifts out of park and mashes his foot down on the gas. Peeling off into the distance, Adrian's finally allowing the engine to breathe, eyes flicking to the speedometer intermittently.[break][break]

As they rip across the sands, Adrian has to fight against the drift of the automobile as it entrenches itself in sand. He's forced to reduce speed as the terrain slopes slightly, impeding their progress. His teeth grit, hoping for a straightaway when it manifests before them.[break][break]

...Or it was a convincing mirage.[break][break]

He reaches for the shift lever, making an adjustment before punching it, sending them rocketing across the desert towards the farm.

The sand rushed underneath them like an orange mirage. Adrian really did know how punch a gear and shift it. Their speed rapidly reached the zenith of the Starmobile's capabilities. In the distance, a group of silhouettes appeared over the horizon.

Hundreds of Buzzwole, marching in unison, flexing as they did so. Yet as they rushed closer, several of the Ultra Beasts fell to their knees. The distant buzzing and clear whirring of insectoid parts. As they car rushed forward, they would see the reason for the Ultra Beasts' outrage.

A horde of Cacturne fought against the aliens with ferocity rarely shown. With a backhanded slap, a Cacturne Knocked Off an Ultra Beast, sending it falling to its knees.

"There! Go!"

After hauling ass back, they arrive on scene to see the slow march of the Buzzwole impeded by Cacnea. It's not the sort of thing he would've expected to see, but it's remarkable to see them come together to achieve something so unthinkable. "Yeah, I'm on it," he sputters.[break]

WICKED TORQUE

Adrian makes sure to clip one of the Buzzwole on the way in. It's a quick way to a free nap, even for a creature of its stature. In all the ruckus and rancor, and in the absence of rubber squealing on asphalt, they're able to disembark from the car without being immediately beset by these creatures. He slams the car door shut as he exits.[break][break]

Reaching for a pokeball, he unleashes Copperajah, which trumpets a blaring challenge.[break][break]

"Raj, cloak our approach; SANDSTORM!"

Sand gave way easily as their ride drifted, its torque striking the Ultra Beasts like a sledgehammer and sending them flying like dominoes. Sand was kicked up by Adrian's Copperajah, and the admin reached for his belt in search of a specific Pokeball.

The elephant made the admin's eye twitch. Copperajah could Gigantamax, and that reminded Howard of his time in Galar where he waged a war against Dynamaxed Pokémon with Dewford's Pale Rider.

"Good cover." Howard nodded in appreciation as they disappeared into the wall of sand. As he tapped the ball, an Orthworm descended into the sand, its Earth Eater triggering as it disappeared into the sandstorm. "Watch this! Orthworm..."

A Buzzwole disappeared into the sand as the earth beneath it was dug out. Howard readied a Pokeball and tossed it at the Buzzwole.

Adrian gives a nod that's veiled in the sandstream. An arm raised to shield his eyes, he pushes through cautiously with Copperajah on his flank. It blindsides him to the silhouette of another beast. But he's able to see as another sinks into the quickening sands. A pokeball was readied...[break][break]

An agonized bellow, a retaliatory thrash. That is what alerts him to the strike, and causes him to shift his attention. The creature contends with them, but Adrian does his best to keep it at arm's length. "Whip up a whirlwind," he'd command, affording Raj a much needed buffer.[break][break]

But the swarm was not easily deterred.[break][break]

"Now, Heat Crash." The two creatures charge, but Copperajah is in a weight class of its own...[break][break]

Copperajah trumpets their triumph in short order.[break][break]

After finishing the beatdown, Adrian and Howard would see the sandstream thinning away, owed to the whirlwind. He could see a pokeball wriggling against the sand. It took a great deal more than was normal, he noticed. At this point, he expected the pokeball to explode open. And so his Copperajah remained at the ready...

It's hard to find fault in Adrian's battle strategy. He conducted himself across the battlefield with remarkable precision, an orchestrator waving his baton to an orchestra of sand and fire and steel and smoldering insects.

His Copperajah is a hammer, but the young man handles it like a scalpel. His skill in the field far outweighed the admin who ranked over him. His Orthworm took out scant few of the Ultra Beasts on its own, wherein Adrian's vehicle and Copperajah felled the aliens like dominoes.

"C'mon, catch! I respect the hustle, but we're gonna beat you no matter what." Howard muttered under his breath as he watched the wiggling Pokeball intensely. As the sand cleared, the truth of Howard's statement became clear.

There were no Ultra Beasts left, besides the one wiggling in the ball. Corpses littered the land. Life that needed to end had ended, and only one remained.

"Catch. You're alone, dammit. C'mon!" The admin's eye narrowed. "Bugger."

Click.

Buzzwole was caught.
