Even outside the prospect of its eventual evolution, studying his newfound fossil Pokemon has been a fascinating endeavour for Gavin.

It anchors itself to the earth as soon as it's sent out, tentacles groping in the air with the same grace and fluidity as if they'd been underwater. If it's suffering on land, Gavin sees no indication.

"Intervene only if necessary," Gavin instructs Aurus, who accompanies him as always. "I am interested to see what this one can do."

A small squirrel Pokemon shivers in the unusual season snow. Perhaps it mistakes the Lileep's waving tentacles for the branches of an odd berry tree, or perhaps it's simply desperate. Whatever the case, it chitters upon approach.

Gavin doesn't think it's noticed him. He leans against a nearby tree with arms folded, saying nothing, waiting for his Pokemon to act.

Skwovet bares its teeth with a super fang, jaws clamping onto Lileep's appendages. The fossil Pokemon responds by ingraining its roots deeper into the earth, following that up with a giga drain to steal back some of the health it had lost.

The squirrel seems surprised; presumably, it wasn't used to its food fighting back.

Lileep takes advantage of this with an energy ball, and the wild Pokemon squeaks in pain and alarm before skittering back into the trees.

Their next threat is much larger, much more intimidating with the crown-like shell upon its brow.

"Careful with this one," he warns his Pokemon, and Aurus lets out a low growl. The fighting-type was somewhat of the defacto leader of Gavin's little band of misfits, and the scientist can tell his Lucario wants to intervene. "Not yet."

Fortunately for the Lileep, and perhaps the Lucario as well, the Slowking seems to have watched the previous battle with the Skwovet. It watches them for a moment with its vacant expression before turning around and heading back the way it had come.

How anticlimactic, Gavin thinks, and shrugs.
