Another night, another hunt.

This time, Gavin is accompanied by one of his more unusual companions. The Alolan Sandshrew wouldn't thrive out here under normal circumstances, but the scientist takes full advantage of the unusual weather patterns to train in convenient areas.

"Let him handle it," he instructs his Lucario, "unless we see what we're looking for."

Lucario barks in affirmation, and Gavin glances expectantly about the route.

A Jigglypuff's hyper voice is enough to make Gavin's ears ring, expression scrunching up with displeasure.

"Take care of it," he orders the Sandshrew.

The dual-type struggles for a moment to recover from the harsh sound, tiny paws clamped to its ears. Gavin makes a face as it begins to hail, but doesn't admonish the Pokemon; he hadn't been specific, after all. The change in weather seems to benefit Sandshrew as slush rush takes effect, boosting the dual-type's speed and allowing it to get the upper hand on its foe.

Sandshrew powers itself up with a quick swords dance before moving in for the kill, dodging Jigglypuff's rollout and retaliating with a slash of sharpened claws.

Gavin stares dispassionately at the fainted pink ball, then nods to his Sandshrew as the mini hailstorm dies down.

"Excellent work."

A Pidgeotto takes a dive toward the Sandshrew as it swipes tiny paws behind its ears. Perhaps the bird mistakes the shrew for easy prey, given its size. This time, Gavin gives no direction. Instead, he waits to see what his Pokemon will do on its own.

Survival instinct kicks in as Pidgeotto closes in, a wing attack buffeting the small dual-type. Sandshrew relatiates with a reflexive slash, following up with an array of icicle spears as the bird backpedals in mid-air. Pidgeotto seems alarmed by the frosty attacks of the shrew, attempting to make an escape.

Sandshrew isn't allowing it.

An ice ball knocks Pidgeotto from the skies, predator-turned-prey. Gavin smiles.

"Full of surprises, aren't you?"

Admittedly, the Helioptile catches his interest.

Gavin palms a pokeball, considering, then grimaces at the fading daylight. He won't be able to stay out here much longer, and was he really going to risk passing up what he was truly searching for in favour of this lizard?

A sudden thunderbolt catches even the placid Gavin off guard; his eyes widen in surprise, then narrow in anger.

"Aurus."

Though the Sandshrew was doing excellent work, Gavin knew his Lucario would end this right.

The dual-type barely moves from his position, ears flicking in response to his trainer's command before an aura sphere manifests between his palms. Helioptile doesn't stand a chance. Irritated though he was, he puts out a hand to stop Aurus from going any further. To faint the creature was enough recompense.

"Let's just go home," he decides, returning Sandshrew to its ball. "I've had enough for tonight."
