[attr="class","threadIris"]if iris wasn't new, she might have thought she'd done something wrong. while she'd had her fair share of grunt work as one of rocket's younger members, she doubted even they would go as far as to assign her to...pest control... but here she was, a fresh face in the league, with a pokemon that was, at beast, unimpressive to boot.

today's supervisor seems as unhappy to be here as the rest were. she wanted to say his mood would probably improve through the course of the day, but iris knew the chances were slim, if experience was anything to go by. she supposed she wouldn't be happy babysitting someone either...

nonetheless, she takes it all in her stride. shoulders stiff, back straight, she looks up at the ranger expectantly. awaiting orders.

Orion's Swampert lumbers alongside him, its steps rattling the ground underfoot.

It might seem a strange idea to bring a water-type into a power plant, but Schism's dual-typing offered immunity to the electricity that they would no doubt be facing once they got further inside.

Normally, Orion doesn't mind this sort of job. No, the ire that radiates from him today is for an entirely separate reason: the girl that accompanies him, the Mudkip they'd been foolish enough to entrust her with. Had they not seen enough in the Pokemon they'd needed to euthanize to know that this wretch shouldn't be trusted with anything alive?

He wouldn't trust her with a houseplant.

"Pokemon up ahead. I'll take point. Try to keep your Mudkip away from the electricity."

He whistles Schism forward, and the Swampert squares off against an Electrode without fear. Nearby, a Probopass approaches at the commotion, unwilling to be removed from its home.

[attr="class","threadIris"]mister lykos' no-nonsense approach is something she's grateful for, even caught in a new walk of life a clear and direct order was universal. she quickly releases her mudkip and quickens her pace to catch up with the ranger. irritated or not, they were on a mission (if you could call it that...) and she wasn't one to let a grudge get in the way of her work.

she watches the man's swampert dive into the problem headfirst, and can't help but feel envious. being given a mudkip alone seemed absurd--how did they expect her to do a good job with a pokemon that'd barely found its footing? if rocket had ever given her a weaker pokemon, it would only be if she stronger one to handle the brunt of the work while she trained it.

the league really were pushing her with this test, weren't they?..

"blue, mud-slap." the name still feels clumsy on her tongue (often she forgets she's even named the thing in the first place). a pleased smile settles on her face as the mudkip throws a mud-slap at the nearby probopass. at least it was obedient.

A flash of electricity is blinding in this confined section of the power plant; Orion winces and throws up his arm to block the invading light.

Schism grumbles his displeasure and slams his thick forelimbs against the ground, earth quaking on impact. The shockwave produced by the move seem to do a number on the Electrode, but it's the Probopass that really feels it: already weakened by the mud-slap, however slightly, it collapses under the combined strength of their efforts.

Electrode remains conscious, but the thunderbolt it directs at Schism bounces harmlessly off his hide.

His Swampert had thrown up a wide guard to shield the Mudkip from the quake, and it lumbers toward its smaller kin as if to check on it.

Orion is far less enthusiastic about his own mission partner. He surveys her out of obligation.

"All right?" he asks.

[attr="class","threadIris"]dead weight. that's what she feels like right now. the swampert, as expected. handles the real heavy work, her own pokemon pales in comparison. she, at least, manages to hold her footing through the earthquake.

the question feels insincere, so she only nods in response.

"um..." she's hesitant to speak up after mister shepard's reaction to similar concerns, but if she doesn't mention it now, she could risk falling behind on future assignments, without the right tools at hand. perhaps lykos would be more reasonable--he seemed to be a sensible man, after all. "shouldn't i've been given another pokemon for this task? i mean, a mudkip doesn't exactly seem appropriate for this..." she struggles to think of a word, "...terrain?"

the regret's instant, iris scrambles to save herself. "i mean, i don't expect you to give me anything! i'm perfectly capable of catching my own pokemon! it's just...there's only so much i can do with one..."

Iris is right to regret her words: when Orion turns his gaze upon her, it's cold and narrow.

"I think," he says, slowly and deliberately, his tone like ice, "that the Rangers were generous to trust you with even one Pokemon, after what you did to your others."

Orion's Swampert can sense the shift in his mood, the dual-type letting out a low grumble of protest. It lumbers up to his side and the ranger's hand comes to rest on the slippery hide of the mud-fish, an anchoring touch.

"Perhaps if you prove you can train this one without abusing it, you'll earn the right to others. I'm astounded they trusted you at all."

It makes him sick to think of how she could treat her Pokemon like tools, like things without feeling.

She had been less than pleased when the League had taken her pokemon away to god knows where. Perhaps they had been scared of her turning on them. Her frustration had only grown when she'd been given a measly mudkip to take their place. A single pokemon for a team of well-oiled machines was hardly a trade off at all. But the League had been kind to her in all other aspects. When her Pokemon were not given to her, she did not question it.

If this were any other situation, she would have buckled up and kept her mouth shut, but the idea of having nowhere to go kept had gotten to her. Iris was determined on proving her worth, showing her potential, and there was no way she could do that with what she had been given. It didn't matter if this got her kicked out when her time was already running out.

"I can't do anything like this, I mean you'd get the same result today if I wasn't here at all! It's hardly an efficient system."

Orion's blood boils. Schism's weight against his side is the only thing keeping him from losing his cool more than he already has.

"Those Pokemon were tortured."

He spits the word through gritted teeth. They'd become strong out of necessity. Schism's strength was in the bond he shared with Orion, raised from a lowly Mudkip to the hulking Swampert that now grounded the ranger. Iris' Pokemon...

"You're right," he snaps, "it's not an efficient system. They're trying to make sure no more Pokemon need to be fucking euthanized—"

He stops himself and exhales, pinching the bridge of his nose. Flying off the handle was only going to take his focus from the job at hand. Besides, he doesn't want word getting to Laurence that he's some volatile hot-head that can't handle difficult trainees.

That doesn't mean he has to be nice.

"Most rangers aren't Rocket's leftovers. Most of them don't need an escort to make sure they don't hurt their damn Pokemon."

Schism's grumble is touched with an edge of concern, the usually-grumpy Swampert looking up at his trainer with something like worry. Orion pats him absently in an attempt to be reassuring.

[attr="class","threadIris"]iris is as much a means to an end as her pokemon were: tools to be used and discarded. just as she could reprimand herself for not utilising her pokemon to the best of their abilities, she finds herself questioning whether lykos really is deserving of his authority. clearly, the man let emotion get in the way of efficiency of the league.

she grits her teeth, stamping her heel into the ground in a show of rage scarcely seen in the girl. "i never asked to be taken in! you should have thrown me in jail with the rest of them if it bothers you this much."

with that, she storms off, only just remembering to return blue to his pokeball. there was no way she was leaving her pokemon, league-given or not, with him.

Did... she just stomp her foot at him?

He's too baffled by the gesture to retaliate at first, staring at her as if she'd grown an extra head, but the shock quickly returns to ire once more as she snaps back.

"It wasn't my decision to make."

Were it up to Orion, no one who treated their Pokemon with such extreme cruelty would be allowed near another, let alone given a second chance to adopt and bond with one. What if her fury at its 'uselessness' turned into violence against the poor Mudkip?

She storms off, and Orion lets a frustrated noise rise in his throat.

"Schism," he says, softly, "I trust you. I need you to take care of things here, all right?"

When the Swampert grumbled his agreement and blinked back at his trainer, Orion dashed after the retreating recruit. He'd been told to supervise her, and he was not about to let her slip out of his sight in his anger.

[attr="class","threadIris"]though she knows this moment is something the ranger would not let go, iris didn't expect for him to act on his annoyance so quickly. she knows he is behind her, but does to give him the satisfaction of turning to face him. if she pretended to not notice, perhaps he'd give up and leave her be. she quickens her pace.

still, she doesn't make it much further before she finally snaps (again). iris forces herself to a stop and whirls around. "shouldn't you be cleaning the power plant?" despite the frosty tone, it's less of an accusation and more a genuine question. she doesn't see why her leaving should hinder the completion of the mission--after all, it wasn't as it she was making much of a contribution in the first place.

Orion's lips press together in a hard line, eyes narrowing at the question. Was she riling him intentionally, now? He'd already slipped up enough by snapping at her in the first place, and so he takes a deep breath to measure his response.

"Yes," he replies, tone stiff with forced calm, "and so should you. Rangers don't give up until the job is done, no matter the odds."

He remembers what Iris had said earlier, about feeling inefficient.

"Blue might not seem strong in this situation, but he'll never get strong if you don't train him."

it took time to train a pokemon, even with her "brutal" methods (as the league had labelled them). these first few weeks were crucial for iris proving her worth, proving there was a reason for the league to keep her under their wing. if they were to turn their backs on her, she's not quite sure of where she would go. naturally, iris wanted to shine and impress.

it wasn't her fault they'd given her a pokemon which made it impossible.

The tension in the air seems to simmer a bit as Iris' glare loses strength.

Orion's coaching himself silently, level breathing. Perhaps he could salvage this enough to avoid it getting back to Laurence.

"Well, let's start simple: how did you used to train Pokemon?" He swallows down any cruel jabs about Rocket and how she'd clearly mistreated her euthanized team, determined to stay professional for the time being. "They didn't all start out strong, did they?"

He gestures back to the power plant in silent indication that they might want to head back inside, but lets her make the decision.
