Irisa spent her childhood in a small run-down house on the outskirts of Azalea town. The place was badly in need of repair, and the ceiling leaked in two spots every time it rained. Rather than spending what was needed to fix it, her mom just put buckets underneath. She had her older brother Tyler helped to switch out the buckets when they got full. While her mother's official job was data entry specialist, her real career was a seedy one, which involved selling slowpoke tails on the black market. Irisa's father was never in the picture, and her mother explained to her when she was older that their dad had broken up with her after finding out she was pregnant.

Her mom kept a handful of slowpokes around the house that had tails in various states of growth, but didn't pay much attention to them. The slowpokes were thin scrawny things that spent most of their time sleeping. Irisa helped to feed them from time to time, but her mom yelled at her if she tried to spend any time with them outside of that. Irisa learned to ignore them the same way her mom did. Irisa's mother sometimes had strange visitors over to the house, and at those times and her brother were instructed to go to their rooms and lock the doors, and to stay there until she told them it was okay to leave.

Irisa was never allowed to have friends from school over, and as a result didn't have many friends growing up. She became something of a cold loner type, and the only person she really felt comfortable talking to was her older brother. When she was a teenager, she finally found out who the mysterious visitors were, because her mother introduced her to one of them. She was given a choice, in which she could either join the organization her mother was affiliated with, or she could get kicked out to live on her own. She didn't really feel there was actually a choice involved, and ended up going with the latter option.

They man who her mom had introduced her to took it that she was joining of her own free will, not that she felt pressured into it by an ultimatum. He gave her a gift for joining the organizing, and provided her with three pokeballs. Inside those pokeballs were three random pokemon that had been stolen from trainers, though he didn't tell Irisa that of course. It took a while for Irisa to get comfortable with becoming a trainer, but the organization wanted her to do the gym circuit in the region. They wanted her to become a better trainer, which would in turn make her ideal for using her pokemon to steal from other trainers.

One day on her way to the fourth gym, Irisa got a panicked text message. Her mother had been discovered selling slowpoke tails, and had subsequently been arrested. The slowpokes had also been seized as well. Irisa found out through her handler that her own mother had thrown her under the bus, by implicating her in the crimes and saying that the whole slowpoke tail racket had been her idea. In other words, she was now wanted for the same crimes as well. Thankfully, the organization and her handler in particular came through for her. They provided her with a ticket that would get her to Hoenn, and had arranged some accommodations for her in Rustboro city. She was instructed to continue on with the gym circuit, much as she had been doing in Johto. Shortly afterwards, she lost all contact with her handler, whose real name she had never been given and just continued on with her last given instructions.

She was completely out of contact with the organization throughout their upheaval, and the new organization's desire to wash their hands of the past meant it stayed that way. Irisa did find out what happened through what little was made public in the news, but she didn't get the whole story. She did suspect that her former handler had probably been arrested, which was why she could no longer contact him. As a remnant of the old organization, Irisa figured it probably still wasn't safe for her to return to Hoenn, so she has decided to continue on with her last given objective, to become a stronger trainer.
