[attr="class","thread"]a small span of water sits between them and what could very well be their doom. a span of water that can easily be flown over, or (give the pokemon's size) tread through. marcel has to lower his sunglasses, make sure his eyes aren't playing up on him. his pokemon stand in formation around him: three points of a triangle.

they were here on a favour. someone wanted pleasing, someone who could be useful for rocket. it's the first job on the field he's been given since coming back to hoenn. marcel wouldn't have minded sticking to the investigating, to tell the truth, it's been a while since he's battled against a pokemon this strong.

Gavin stares across the water, and sighs.

"Yep. Some dragon."

Sometimes, he's not sure if the higher-ups are testing his mettle or messing with him. Days like these, it certainly feels like the later. 'You've got a fairy type, Gavin! You're the man for the job!'

Said fairy-type sits at his feet, seemingly unsure of whether she'd prefer to cower away from Gavin or the much larger threat that loomed upon the horizon. Each time her new master shifts his weight, clears his throat, makes any indication of action, she flinches and whines.

Honestly, it's no wonder there's rumour going around that he mistreats his Pokemon, at this rate.

so excited about this! he has other mons with him, alcremie's just the only one outta the ball.

IT COMES, SOARING THROUGH THE SKY WITH THE FANFARE OF FLAME. this salamence seems much larger than its usual kind, for the shadow it casts above the trainers is vast. all-encompassing. the emerging umbral wave threatens to consume and swallow them whole.[break][break]

as the dragon terrorizes the air, it splashes into the pool. it cleaves a mouthful of water, before spewing a torrent (HYDRO PUMP) at his intruders.[break][break]

[attr="class","thread"]they're covered by a sheet of blue. the hydro pump crashes into the protect, spilling off the edges and soaking the ground around them. "we really don't get paid enough for this." he jokes, trying to ease the dread settling in the pit of his stomach. there's a light drizzle as the protect fades, the thin layer of water atop of it dropping into freefall. marcel starts running before the salamence can fire another attack.

"belle, go for the wing!" the dragonair doesn't so much as hesitate before aiming an ice beam at the salamence's wing. as much as he'd prefer the pokemon as far away from him as possible, there's a huge advantage it has from the skies; grounding it seems like the most logical solution.

he watches the dragon standing in the water, ready to anticipate his next attack. "hey, think it's protecting something?" he wonders aloud. eggs were the most probable answer, and from a pokemon this large, they were sure to be valuable. he really could do with the extra brownie points...

marcel grabs the scruff of his noivern, ready to hop on. if he could just fly around it and check the expanse of land across the water... "i think i'm gonna check it out."

Not anticipating the Protect, Gavin dives to the side to avoid the incoming Hydro Pump. He lands hard on damp ground and gets to his feet to see Marcel standing before a shimmering barrier that disappears before Gavin's eyes and scatters the last drops of water amidst blades of grass.

"We really don't," he grumbles.

Marcel announces his intent to fly across the water, and raised eyebrows express Gavin's opinion of the move. He shrugs.

"Your funeral. We'll try and distract it for you to get across."

As Marcel mounts his Noivern, Gavin turns to the quivering dessert, who appears to literally melt beneath his gaze. Gavin only realises the effects of acid armour in the strange shimmer that ghosts across her form.

"You're going to attack that Salamence." When she stares at him, wide-eyed, he persists. "You're a fairy, it's a dragon, you'll kick its ass. Dazzling Gleam, I know you know that."

She whimpers in fear, but not protest, turning toward the mighty dragon and staring up at its majesty. She shoots a quick side-glance at Gavin before the sky lights up in a dazzling gleam of pink that blinds the dragon and causes it to rear back in the air, snarling in pain.

"Go now!" Gavin calls to Marcel.

yeah, he could see that happening...

at gavin's shout, vega pushes off the ground. the tips of her left wing cut into the surface of the water as she manoeuvres around the dragon; marcel can only clutch on in hopes he won't fall off. belle dives into the water and follows the two, a shadow barely-visible under the water. jupiter remains on the other side of the lake, not built for the speed this crossing required. beside, he felt he should leave gavin with at least some back-up.

he stumbles onto the ground, breaking into the run towards the rock face by the shore. he was sure something was here. "vega, go take a look." the noivern hurls a dragon pulse which hits the salamence square in the chest before scaling the ridge.

Though Gavin glances across the water to ensure that Marcel has made it safely across, his main concerns are for his own safety.

With only his cowardly Alcremie and the Electivire for back-up, he feels rather inadequate in facing down their draconic foe. A tossed pokeball fixes that: his Alolan Sandslash appears with a flurry of hail that batters the dragon's wings and incenses it further.

In spite of the dragon pulse Vega had fired, it would seem the Salamence was now laser-focused on Gavin's side of the water. Good. That should give Marcel time to search for... whatever he expected to find.

Sandslash hurls a ball of ice toward the oversized dragon, who roars and bathes the dual-type in its flamethrower. Sandslash collapses, defeated.

Shit.

The hailstorm continues to rage, pelting their side of the field.

[attr="class","thread"]he can hear the commotion from his side of the lake (though admittedly the distance isn't enough to make this a surprising observation). knowing that vega could take care of herself for now, he dares to glance over. a sandslash collapses onto the dirt. "well shit."

fearing he would grab the dragon's attention, marcel attempts to catch his electivire's attention without shouting without success. it seems like it isn't necessary, however, as jupiter begins to move on instinct. a light screen covers gavin and his alcremie, hopefully preventing the fall of any more pokemon.

"belle, thunder wave." the dragonair aims a bolt towards the salamence's ankle, electricity crackling, skimming off the surface of the lake. perhaps this will buy them some more time.

Noting the assistance of the Electivire, Gavin offers the Pokemon a curt nod of thanks. The light screen provided by the bulky electric-type proves instrumental in tempering the blow of a second flamethrower that targets his frightened Alcremie.

She looks hurt, and Gavin's gearing up to consider returning her when she surprises him: she launches herself toward the massive dragon and latches onto it with a draining kiss.

He can't help but to be impressed.

As the Salamence snarls and flails its paralysis-stiffened neck in an attempt to shake off the determined fairy-type, Gavin glances across the water to check on Marcel's progress.

[attr="class","thread"]vega's crawled into a small cave. marcel's attention's divided between her and the larger dragon. the alcremie's finally decided to stand its ground, it seems. marcel hums in approval. a hushed cry from vega makes him look up, the noivern leans out of the cave with an egg in her mouth. he grins. "gotcha."

unfortunately it's in that moment the salamence decides to turn. it takes it a moment to unravel the scene, but once it does it lets out an earth-shaking cry. marcel swears under his breath.

"jupiter!" it's too late to worry about drawing attention, "electric terrain!" the ground crackles with static, he can feel the energy buzzing underneath his feet. the salamence is steadily breaking out of its paralysis, he can't give it time to act. "thunder! you too, belle!" the two pokemon unleash a thunder and thunder bolt respectively--the combined attack along with the boost of electric terrain bring the dragon to its knees.

As the ground below begins to crackle with electricity and Gavin's hair stands on end, he clicks the button on Alcremie's pokeball to recall her. It wouldn't do for her to be struck by a stray bolt when she was clinging to the dragon for dear life.

Steelix is sent out in her place, the electricity ghosting harmlessly over its thick coils.

It suffers from similar weaknesses to flame, but Gavin can tell they won't need to worry about that. Lightning flashes down from the sky overhead, and the behemoth of a dragon is brought down to the earth. The impact quakes the ground, and Gavin steadies himself against his Pokemon.

"Pin its wings."

Steelix grumbles affirmation, cracking a nearby boulder with her iron tail and scattering a rock slide across the Salamence's broad wings. Even if it regained its strength, now, it wasn't taking off.

go ahead and catch it! <3
