DEATH STRANDING
POSTED ON May 21, 2020 18:33:28 GMT
Thomas walked back up towards the cocoon, head hanging down in shame at what he had done. Even if it was for the balance of the world, the Kalosian still felt horrible about what transpired. Sure, the first kill made him feel sick, but the man objectively had it coming. But the old woman he had ended didn't deserve what she got. Bandaged hands hung down low as he walked. --- Through a camera on his Sableye's head, he had observed the woman's daily routine. Leaving her abode to volunteer to assist those who had been harmed in the attack on Slateport. Through the electric eye on the Sableye, he could see the hours she put into helping those people, the good she was doing for them. All of it made the Gym Leader feel that much worse about what he would have to do. Through his remote observation, Thomas would see that one of the steps leading up to the old woman's abode was rickety, though not quite deteriorated enough to cause an accident. Still, if it got bad enough, then a fall, either on the edge of a step, or the bottom walkway, would break her neck after it gave way, and caused her to fall down. Despite his ever increasing reservations about going through with it, knowing that the others might not share his reluctance, Thomas had the Sableye sabotage the step while the woman was away from home, on with her usual rounds. This time, the Sableye was not fitted with the camera, acting on its own. That way, in the event it was discovered, it could escape, acting as a mischievous wild Pokemon, rather than something on orders. Thomas sulked on a park bench, downing a thermos full of black coffee in silence. It was then that a familiar old woman approached the cyclops. "Oi, I know you.", the woman started, getting Thomas' attention. "Yes, you're the Gym Leader of Verdanturf. I heard about what you'd done in Slateport, and what you did for the hurt.", the old woman continued. "Thank you for all that you've done to help out.", the woman told him with a bow, before starting back on her way. Thomas, hiding his guilt, finally spoke up. "And I've heard of you. You've also been aiding the victims of the attack, haven't you?", Thomas inquired. "That's right!", the woman beamed. "How did you hear about me?", the woman asked. "I heard from a friend.", Thomas told her, coming up with a half-truth. "I should be thanking you, on behalf of the League, and everyone else. We need more people like you stepping up in our time of need. I can only hope more people follow your example.", Thomas told her truthfully, yet holding back his feelings of intense guilt. "Aww, shucks! I'm just doin' what's right!", the woman told him. "Now, I've got to head off! Nice to meet ya!", the woman told him, before heading off to provide aid for the victims of the attack. As soon as she left, all Thomas could do was hunker down in shame, waiting for his Sableye to signal him for pickup, and head home. The longer this went on, the more he wanted this to fail. Balance or not, the old woman was doing so much good for the people of Hoenn. About a day later, Thomas would find out that the old woman had died. The rickety step, which had been deteriorated further thanks to the machinations of his Sableye, gave way as she stepped on it, causing her to fall back, and break her neck on impact. Thomas would shut himself in at that point, the built up horror of what he was conspiring to do, and what had transpired through his actions, catching up with him in full. All the Gym Leader could do was punch at a concrete wall, wailing on it much to the detriment of his hands. By the time he was finally exhausted, Thomas' hands were bloodied and battered, the wall covered in his blood as he slumped down on the ground, staring at his bloody knuckles. The Audino, who were attempting to get into the room as they heard their master, would finally be let in. Alarmed at what they saw, they desperately attempted to patch up their trainer's hands, and comfort the man. --- Thomas finally reached the cocoon, staring up at the dark chrysalis. He had no words to give the object. All he could do was keep himself from vomiting.
