The Griffiths have followed in the well-trodden path of the region's ranger career path for generations. It was encouraged, expected, even. Your father was the Head Ranger's pet for a week ten years ago during a brief but 'life-threatening' volcano eruption that you didn't think was that big a deal - because it's a volcano, and it erupts like.. once a week, doesn't it? How are you supposed to know?[break][break]

Oh, but you didn't hear the end of it at dinner when father finally did come home covered in soot but unburned and unscathed. You're pretty sure he rubbed his elbows in ash right before knocking on the door, y'know, to make him look better.[break][break]

Not that you don't think your dad is impressive or good at his job. He's perfect, really. You just see past the rose-coloured glasses because you can see that he's drowning in his beer glass. He works too hard and it's destroying him. [break][break]

But yet he always puts a smile on his face and kisses mom on the cheek and keeps up appearances like it isn't and you're the only one paying attention - not that anyone believes you.[break][break]

That's right, you're the black sheep of the family, did you forget to mention that? [break][break]

You take after Pops but you aren't good at hiding your scars, putting on that charming brave face and brushing off the dirt. You're an excellent ranger, you were born and bred for it after all! But you didn't get to pick out all of the good genes. Something had to get missed, right?[break][break]

The two of you are the same person, and that's probably why you argue and don't see eye to eye. Dad's had a lifetime of experience perfecting his imperfections, and you've decided you don't care enough to try. You've heard it all before, you've heard the stories over dinner about how amazing your grandfather was, and his father before him, and on and on and on and it bores you because it's all an exaggeration.[break][break]

Thank God your baby brother got the award-winning personality. It's just too bad he's the worst ranger the Griffiths have ever seen.
