another gym challenge to take, another badge to aquire. this time the hero pokkenger decided to make an appearance in mauville to make it known that he was taking the gym challenge in hoenn. his name had been spreading far and wide but this out to make it crawl into every nook and cranny of this region. just this once kazimir would allow himself to let the fame go to his head.

what he wouldn't allow was this maze to stop him from getting that badge, however it was putting up a good attempt. throughout the gym the sounds of rustling could be heard as the bushes inside the maze shook violently as pokkenger hugged himself close to their walls and made his way out towards the gym leader's center chamber. "not even nature can stop pokkenger from reaching his goal!" he shouted as he emerged from within the maze, "now i hope your ready gym leaduer of mauville, because this hero is ready for your challenge!"

breloom ♂: poison heal -seed bomb, poison powder, dynamic punch, counter, giga drain, mind reader

she wasn't use to such a boisterous entrance, so cait couldn't help but blink owlishly at the vaguely familiar individual. his entrance had been accompanied by the sound of violently shaking brush, his journey through the maze likely a rough one.

'as long as he hasn't damaged any of my plants...'

how many times had she had to mend her own maze? far too many from recent memory had allowed impatience to serve as her personal garden's undoing, the neatly trimmed collection of plants left in ruin more often than naught.

"so you're here for a badge then," she replied, amicably.

at her side was a breloom, the pokemon appearing outwardly nonplussed by the ranger's dramatic entrance.

"are you up for another one, breloom?"

the pair had completed a challenge roughly an hour ago, but her breloom appeared to be in decent enough shape to continue after the brief respite. her grass-type offered a sharp nod, situating himself before his mistress and hopping from one foot to another in quick succession.

"this will be a one on one. the winner will be determined by whose pokemon is left standing," she said, offering up a simple explanation of the rules. "any questions? if not - you're welcome to start."

the masked hero nodded along with the description of the rules for his challenge. one on one battle that was simple enough to understand, in the pit of his stomach there grew a flower of doubt. that meant that he had a small window to make a good impression and prove that he was a strong trainer worthy of getting a badge. to reiterate, that he was a strong enough hero to protect the people of hoenn like he's always done.

there was nothing wrong with making sure that one had the strength to throw themselves in front of harms way after all.

as he silently hyped himself up he gave the gym leader a thumbs up and a "no questions here." to show that he was listening. eyeing up the pokemon that the gym leader was going with pokkenger reached down to his own belt. he had a few pokemon that would make this battle a cinch, but that wasn't what he needed here. he needed to put himself through a trial to further himself and there was one pokemon that could help keep this fight even but give him the edge he needs. "c'mooooooooon captain!"

with a flick of the wrist out popped out the roserade that did a flick of its hair at the sight of the battlefield and its opponent breloom on the other side. "captain rose let's show them your the best grass type around!" with those words of encouragement the roserade crossed his arms as his growth took effect and his body grew a few centimeters taller.

'that's a solid opener.'

quite a few preferred to charge in head first as opposed to strengthening their arsenal. growth would cause the roserade to hit harder, their special attacks rendered exceptionally potent.

"i suppose we'll do the same," cait remarked.

her gaze settled on the back of her companion.

"poison powder."

the breloom was well-trained and ultimately aware of his mistress's intentions, producing the spores without lending them any form of direction. instead they were left to hover around the pokemon who inhaled the sweet toxin deeply. once several lung fulls were taken in and a grimace passed over the breloom's face, the poison power faded into nothingness.

"bre," they wheezed, shaking their head firmly.

both the hero and the roserade tilted their heads in confusion as they watched the breloom poison itself with its own move. that sure was...a tactic, perhaps something to do with buffing itself up while its weak? kazimir was always just a few steps short of climbing the ladder to being considered an ace trainer so he didn't know everything there was to pokemon battles but so far his experience had managed to cover that thanks to just how ridiculous its been. with that in mind it would probably be for the best of them to try and be a little bit cautious with this battle.

"don't think pity will work on a hero right now! captain, shoot it down with a poison sting!" The roserade clicked its two bulbs before aiming them at the breloom and dashing around the battlefield. as it did it fired off a shower of puprle needles filled with acid that were sure to leave a powerful sting on the already poisoned breloom. sure it couldn't get more poisoned from this attack but the effectiveness was what mattered more than some status.

the poison sting smarts, her pokemon visibly cringing as multiple barbs harshly impacted the length of his form. breloom released a sharp gasp at its conclusion, his grimace followed by a look that spelled relief. the pungent poison that presently circulated throughout his veins began their work, his body forcing the unpleasant concoction to tend to his wounds as opposed to worsening them.

it healed only a small margin of his hurts, but it allowed him to regain his focus that much faster.

"mind reader, breloom."

and with that hastily regained focus they utilized mind reader, his eyes rounding and growing clear. he soon hopped from one foot to the other upon powerful legs, his increasingly hostile gaze remaining fixed upon the roserade as an excited grin played at his lips.

it looked like their little attack managed to do some type of damage to the breloom but it seemed to almost not really mind it or it just wasn't as effective as the duo thought as the breloom seemed relieved of the pain just a few seconds later. guess this one was one tough customer that was going to take some heavy offense to take down. "cap show them that they ain't getting any hits in, magical leaf!" he shouted to his roserade once again.

with a nod and a yell of acknowledgement the roserade aimed one of its bulbs at the breloom and from within the buds it fired a volley of leaves. as they soared towards the breloom the leaves began to glow with a psychedelic swarm of colors as they suddenly twisted in the air and splintered off into two streams that came down onto the breloom. even trying to escape would prove difficult as they would turn and chase after the other grass type until they managed to leave their mark.

while breloom's defenses were naturally bolstered against such an attack, the usage of growth had increased its potency by a large margin. it stung fiercely, each individual leaf threatening to slice at his flesh as the attack battered his form mercilessly. the pokemon stumbled, but remained upon his feet as his sharp gaze returned to the roserade.

"dynamic punch, breloom."

mind reader followed by a well-executed dynamic punch drastically increased the accuracy of the typically inconsistent move, granting the dual-type a decent chance at landing a blow. his temporarily granted insight allowed for him to more easily predict his opponent's moves, causing him to adjust his trajectory slightly before closing the distance and thrusting his paw toward the roserade's abdomen.

the captain let out a click of his teeth as he realized that his attack might not have hit as hard as he had wanted to even with the growth of strength he displayed earlier. this opponent definitely was a sturdy one, not that that was something bad but the start to this fight was something that the captain didn't seem to really know how to process. a lot of battles it had done were quick and decisive ever since he met kazimir. "don't worry cap. we knew that wasn't gonna work much. just keep him outta your zone." the masked hero called out to reassure that they were doing just fine.

as much as the roserade wanted to enjoy those words the breloom suddenly charged forward. rose was able to read it enough to start dodging it but the breloom's sudden change in movement in order to counter his own evasive action caught him off guard. it was just enough to feel the punch dig into his stomach and send the roserade rolling onto the dirt and take a second to get back onto his hands and knees. "they're really combining their moves better than we do...so we'll just hit them with something stronger, captain! extrasensory!"

when the pokkenger was giving direct commands captain rose knew that things were going to get serious. once he was back on his feet he hopped backwards to gain some extra distance between him and the opposing pokemon as his eyes began to glow, the light in them filling the holes in his mask as his bulbs started to leak the same kind of glow from them before the light was turned into waves of energy with the sound of a roar from the roserade that was coming towards the breloom like a tsunami full of psychic energy.

a lingering burst of agony reverberated throughout the interior of breloom's skull, the dual-type staggering as he visibly cringed away from the potent wave of energy. he nearly teetered over, but forced himself to grow steady as he gritted his teeth. the poison which continued to seep and flood his system was hastily converted into medicine, his tainted blood seeking to soothe away the hurts yet again.

but the process was pitifully slow, only a hint of a relief felt in the wake of the roserade's attack.

"seed bomb!"

aware that the damage that been administered was worringly significant, cait decided to instruct her pokemon to remain mostly stationary. she'd rather avoid a potential stumble in favor of playing it safe. the pokemon's maw opened wide as he directed a barrage of glowing seeds at the roserade, his face still pulled into a tight grimace.

things seemed to be going well but confidence was a hero's strongest weapon and their greatest weakness. he couldn't let his guard down despite their enemy showing signs that they were wearing down, they were still standing after all. something about poisoning itself must have kept it fighting even after being hit with a powerful move like the captains psychic assault. perhaps it was time to make sure that their attacks were actually draining the opponents energy. now that was an idea.

as the breloom made its own move against the captain the roserade was prepared to counter when the pokkenger made an odd request. "take it cap and then steal it right back!" the roserade took a second to process the order, his trainer had a habit of calling out non-direct orders in order to camouflage a strategy, not bad but it did take a bit to understand. so the roserade brought his arms up as the seeds struck against his body and he let out grunts of frustration and pain. as the attack was done the roserade peeked through closed eyes and unfurled his arms as large thorny vines creeped out from his flower bulbs as he whipped them towards the breloom where they would attempt to giga drain whatever energy it had and give it to the roserade to give it a second wind.

breloom was left reeling, the experience of being drained of a good portion of his already dwindled energy supply enough to leave him thoroughly winded. but he remained standing, reliant upon his discipline as a fighter to keep him up and at 'em. but it likely wouldn't last, the breloom growing increasingly rigid as his legs trembled.

'not good,' cait thought.

the prior usage of growth had been a wise one, the roserade's attacks proving far more formidable - far more potent. and poison heal could only do so much in the long run, which meant they had to administer a few more decisive hits if they desired a win.

'c'mon, boy,' she cheered, inwardly. 'give me your best out there.'

"breee."

breloom gritted his teeth, his eyes narrowing as he opened his mind and glimpsed into the future.

while the roserade's attacks were very potent the defense of the breloom was quite admirable. this gym battle felt like it was turning into a war of attrition and while the captain was dealing some heavy damage the fact that the breloom kept recovering bits of damage was worrying. it would be a close call if it managed to beat the pokkenger's pokemon by just a tiny sliver and the superhero wasn't going to let it happen just like that. "we gotta finish it in one or two more moves captain. show them that even the sturdiest of roses can grow under harsh weather!"

the roserade understood, it would need to make its thorns sharper in order to prevail in this battle and earn that badge for his trainer. with a low hum the roserade's body began to undergo another growth spurt as it felt power rise through every vein. as it did it gave the breloom a glare that was like shears to a bush as it wanted to convey the message that it was going down one way or another. heck even a draw would suffice for the captain even if the pokkenger seeked absolute victory.

the dual-type glimpsed the future, allowing him to adjust and roughly gauge the trajectory of his following attack. his eyes narrowed upon the roserade as it bolstered its strength, the bipedal creature coiling his muscles prior to lurching forward. without a verbal prompt from his mistress, he sought to cross the distance between himself and his foe.

a dynamic punch sprung forth, his arm extending dramatically as he aimed toward the creature's chest.
