There is a shift in the mood, a lingering discomfort, but Gavin is merely satisfied in having convinced her to stay til morning.[break][break]

He nods his acceptance.[break][break]

"I'll be right back. You should sit down."[break][break]

She looks faint, and he worries she might faint if she doesn't. That he leaves her alone to dip back into his basement laboratory is either a sign of trust — either in her character or her compromised state of health.[break][break]

He comes back quickly with his supplies and quickly gets to work redressing her wound, frowning at the state of it as practiced hands clean and bandage. With the passage of hours, it's grown angry and red. He hopes they'd caught it in time to avoid infection.[break][break]

"Did you want something for the pain?"

Gavin nods and her stress manages to fade just a little bit as he asks her to sit down. She does just that, unsure if she was following orders or following her own better judgment. Regardless, she collapses into the soft couch and winces, laying her palm upside down and open, doing her best not to clench her teeth or flex her arm in any way.[break][break]

When he returns he sets to work immediately, pulling the blood-soaked bandages away to clean and re-wrap the stitched up mess. She looks away, fighting the urge to flinch away or cry out. Her teeth dig sharply into her bottom lip, leaving indents in her fair skin.[break][break]

His hands are cold against her skin, and, while careful and diligent, his closeness is overwhelming. Goosebumps rise across her skin and she shivers in spite of herself. Eventually, should his hand linger against her bare skin, she would reach out to push him away - even though something tugs at her to keep him close.[break][break]

Chances were his hands were cold but the rest of him was not, and she was hungry for warmth.[break][break]

"Your hands are cold."[break][break]

Despite the growl in her tone, her voice is soft, tired.

Gavin works swiftly and in relative silence, intent on the task at hand. As his fingers trace the edge of the bandaging to ensure it remained tight to her skin, Emma's complaint breaks his concentration and causes him to look up.[break][break]

"Hm? Ah, sorry."[break][break]

For the briefest of moments, his accent peeks through under the influence of hard-coded manners beaten into him as a child. He doesn't do much apologising nowadays.[break][break]

Brushing aside whatever memories sought to surface, his brow furrows with concern. His hand, which he'd pulled away at her words, rests lightly on his own forearm as if to test the validity of her statement. Hard to tell. That feeling hot was a symptom of several things — none of them good — did not escape his notice. Were his hands cold, or was she burning up?[break][break]

He rests his forearm against her skin, tilts his head.[break][break]

"Still cold?"

His fingertips tracing the edge of the bandage coax a soft and involuntary breath from her lips, an exhale that she can't take back. If it were possible to blush or to feel any sense of embarrassment it might have shown on her face - but her cheeks feel warm already with the beginning of a fever. Perhaps she was burning up as he thought.[break][break]

Emma watches as his hand pulls away and she tucks her own hand back to her side. He seems skeptical of his coldness, however, pressing his hand to his own skin and then gently pressing his forearm to the bare skin next to her wound. He still feels cold and she shivers underneath his touch, her breathing growing labored.[break][break]

The woman's eyes drift closed against her will as she focuses on not fainting on top of him.[break][break]

"I'm.. fine. I just need rest."[break][break]

But her voice is but a whisper and it's clear her condition has worsened as a result of her stress and panic and earlier strain.

Emma shivers, and Gavin's frown deepens.[break][break]

Regardless of whether or not she's running a fever, the fact she needs rest is indisputable.[break][break]

He steps over to the kitchen to grab a tall glass of water and retrieves a couple ibuprofen before handing both of them to her.[break][break]

"Take these. Either way, they'll help."[break][break]

It would reduce her fever if she had one and dull her pain regardless. He also fetches a spare blanket from the hall closet. If she was cold and shivering, it would no doubt be hard to sleep in the temperate room — especially in her current attire.[break][break]

Gavin himself takes a position on the armchair, resolving to keep an eye on her just in case.

The woman's eyes remain closed even after he pulls away, nearly sleeping sitting upright other than the fact that she hadn't stopped shivering. [break][break]

When he returns, however, she blinks her eyes awake and slowly reaches for the glass and ibuprofen. The delicate tablets fall into her palm and she takes them along with a generous drink of water. With a small sigh, the woman leans back, holding the glass tightly so as to not drop it.[break][break]

The blanket wraps around her shoulders and immediately soothes her trembling form. She exchanges it for the glass and she's nearly asleep by the time she lays the back of her head against the arm of the chair.[break][break]

From Gavin's seat not far away from her, he would be able to see that she did not stir in the morning and wouldn't be gone as she had promised.
