noah has lost his phone. perhaps, he had dropped on the way here from rustboro, but he remembers having sent a cheeky selfie to kyle lopez under this dense canopy. the lighting was not favourable, in the least.

and it is that very same lighting, so dim and grim, that renders the discovery of his phone almost impossible.

he sighs, rubbing his neck with an impatient rhythm. if he had less restraint, he would have been physically scolding himself for the sheer stupidity of losing something as important as that.

noah sees an oddly dressed bystander and hedges his bets. "hey! have you seen a phone by any chance? it's got a machamp case on it."

Today was the day! Her first day in fact! From today onwards, Raegan was a real, certified, Pokémon Ranger… cadet, in training.

But she shrugged off the second part, and merely smiled. It had been an ambition for a while. Ever since, she had met that Ranger back home and protected that forest from burning to cinders. Possibly hurting hundreds to thousands of the Pokémon that lived in that woodland.

Raegan’s first mission wasn’t exactly… the most interesting or important, but it was a start. She was to patrol Petalburg Woods. Watch out for villains who may try and hurt or injure Pokémon, or else, help the Pokémon that lived there. Or… to help someone find a dropped phone.

The young lady wandered through the shrubbery, the dank undergrowth and winding roots – shadowed by the thick canopy of tree that lay overhead. So focused on her ‘mission’, she failed to notice the young man standing behind her, until he spoke. Raegan jumped a foot into the air, not having expected a human voice to appear, as if, out of nowhere.

Raegan turned, her head a little tilted. “Oh, I’m sorry… citizen. I wasn’t, uh, expecting… anyone.”

She laughed a nervous chuckle, hand pressed against her head. Her serious demeanor that she wanted to show had been instantly broken. It was her first day, after all. She had to be tough and try her best.

“A phone with a Machamp case? I can’t say I have. I’ve been patrolling for a while.”

“I can give you a hand in searching though? If you want?” Raegan said, holding out a gloved hand.

“My name is Raegan. I’m a Ranger… cadet, in training.” The last few words were nothing more than a murmur.

he sighs. the dim lighting of the wood falls a shade darker thanks to his building frustration. but he remains calm, amiable; noah's fingers itch for that phone.

"that'd be great. that phone has like, a ton of important pics on there." noah rubs his face. "if i lost those i don't know what i'd do."

he shakes raegan's hand and tells her his name. noah too, is a cadet in training. however, rumblings above seem to suggest that he may be stationed somewhere else soon.

a shroomish waddles by, and noah wonders if it has seen a phone...

"alright, ranger-in-training. you help me out with this, and i can write up a wild letter of recommendation for you." noah says, chest out. "it'll get you noticed for sure."

Raegan couldn’t help but smile, in spite of Noah’s clear frustration at the loss of his phone. This was her very first ‘mission’. Although, technically, it was her first mission in a mission.

“Don’t worry, we’ll find that phone. No matter how long it takes! No matter the odds,” she put up her arm, like a rallying cry and stepped forward into the deeper undergrowth.

“It’s very sweet of you to offer to write me a recommendation, though,” Raegan said, without looking back at Noah. “I do appreciate the thought.” She was quite content with how everything was going so far. Everyone, Raegan had thus far met had been very sweet and friendly to her.

“I think we should probably retrac– ”

Raegan cut herself off as something squeezed, beneath a large root sticking up from the soil – almost like a gnarly witches claw. Immediately distracted, Raegan dropped to all fours. “You’re a Chikorita. So cute, so cute, so cute,” she muttered, slowly inching towards the Pokémon.

The little green bean looked up, head slightly tilted. Brushing the long leaf that grew from the creatures forehead, away from its eyes. “Hello, there. I’m Raegan,” she said, eyes bright and wide. Completely neglecting to Noah and his phone predicament.

“Here, take a berry! You look hungry!” She opened the little pack that she had been given at induction and drew a small blue berry, round and soft. “Enjoy!”

The Chikorita sniffed the berry, once, twice and then for a third time before moving in. With a few bites and a large swallow – the berry had vanished. “Are you seeing how cute this is,” Raegan whispered to Noah. Completely forgetting her decorum and professionalism.

“So, uh, this is a little gauche and sudden. I’m sure you have a family of your own and everything but how about you come along with me?”

Raegan stopped herself and shook her head, standing back up. “Actually, I’m sure you’ve got a perfectly good life here. I wouldn’t want to disrupt the balance of nature, y’know?” She looked down into the big eyes of the Chikorita and turned to face Noah again. “So that phone. Any clues on where you saw it last?”

As Raegan stepped forward, so did the Chikorita. It seemed unwilling to part so suddenly. “Oh, uh, did you want to join after all?”

The little green bean nodded and with a little bound, jumped into Raegan's arms as if to say...

'I'm not going anywhere'.

the sight is sweet as the berry that is fed. noah scratches his chest, watching raegan take the small leaf pokemon under her wing. his fingers pluck an non-existent itch as he scouts ahead.

"very cute." noah says. "maybe chikorita can help out too." he thinks, scouring his goldfish memory for where he last saw his phone. "i remember checking my phone by this rock with a bunch of moss, but other than that? no clue, man."

as he wades through the thickening foliage, other pokemon make their presence known. involuntarily, perhaps. they are disturbing the wild.

"got a name for the chikorita?"

As the pair wandered deftly through the thick, unwieldy forest. “So, ‘rocks with a bunch of moss’, huh.” Raegan tilted her head a little, looking around the forest floor. Hoping that the mysteriously missing phone would just pop out of nowhere, right in front of her.

Though everywhere she looked, rocks with moss stuck out from the mud, brush, fallen leaves and branches, and other Pokémon.

Every so often, Raegan would pause and glance over to the Pokémon that she was supposedly here to watch over and to help if needed. Many more Pokémon began to appear from behind the trees. A Roserade stood in a patch of flowers, perhaps trying to blend in, or maybe it just like being amongst the multicolored blossoms.

Shadowy and slightly eerie lights emanated from the jack-o'-lantern body of a Gourgeist. Lighting up the thicket with yellow glowing orbs. Raegan jumped slightly, and fell right into Noah – an accidental hug of sorts.

As if trying to regain her poise, Raegan moved forward and spoke in a carrying voice. “hum, hum. Don’t worry we’ll find it! No way, we will stop now.”

“A name?” Raegan said, looking down at the little potato-shaped, green creature in her arms. “I’ll have to think about that one.”

“Although, hey Chikorita. Have you seen any… unusual human objects lying around? Kinda like this...” The girl drew out a mobile phone from a zipped pocket and held it out for the Chikorita to see.

The Chikorita let out a little chirp of interest and moved the hanging head leaf away from his eyes. After a second of staring and more chirps and chirps, the Pokémon jumped down from her arms and began to walk with a quickened pace deeper into the forest. “Well? Shall we?”

as raegan produces her phone, noah's shoulders slouch. he smiles— but it's tempered weak. in this forest, a black hole of lost possessions and lost pokemon, noah wonders if his phone will ever be retrieved.

ahead in the branches, he sees a shiftry. a rare sight. rarer than his phone— but noah does not stop to marvel at it. among the trees, he pines for the lost photos and messages.

at least he has company. "y'know, sorry about dragging you into all of this. there's definitely better stuff to be doing, man."

noah sighs, hand reaching for something invisible among the mushroom spotted path.
