[attr="class","dilyrics2"]Sorry this was slow coming
[attr="class","dibody2"]Tate stood beside the door of the dojo, looking out over the room. There were still five minutes left until class and he was never sure what to do with himself during that awkward space of time. For the sake of doing something, he nitpicked the placement of the chairs along the edge of the room and straightened the already tidy yoga supplies, but only a minute had passed when he checked his watch again.
This was supposedly the perfect time to greet and get to know students as they came in, but he wasn’t great at starting conversations. Even starting class still felt a little strange to him, but at least he knew where he was going and so could just push through the welcome with confidence, if not skill. The same couldn’t be said for small talk.
So Tate just stood near the door and nodded in greeting as students began to arrive. He tried to avoid making them feel like he was staring at them as they got settled and looked around, but it was difficult not to do, and he’d rather they know he was observant.
Finally the clock read 6pm and he strode to the middle of the floor, leaving the door open for any latecomers.
“Hey everybody, welcome to this introductory self-defense class,” he began. “My name is Tate, and my goal is to send you home with skills that you can apply right away if you get in a bind.”
“I’m assuming I don’t need to tell all of you why self-defense is important—I’ll save it for the individuals I had to drag here,” he cracked a smile. “So let me just give you an overview of what we’re going to be doing today.
“First, we’re going to talk about how to avoid panic. Then, we’ll spend the bulk of our time working on a defensive technique. We’ll wrap up with an awareness exercise. All of this will take around 50 minutes, after which I’ll be hanging around if anyone wants to ask questions. Though of course, please feel free to ask questions at any point during class.
“Um… also if you think that something we’re doing could be useful for one of your pokemon, you’re welcome to bring them in, though today’s lesson is more focused on human encounters.
“Now before we get started, I really want to emphasize that this class is about helping you to be safe. That means that even though I have all these classes planned out, I’m more than willing to be flexible, change things around, and even cover things I don’t normally if that’s what you guys need. So again, please feel free to ask questions!
“I expect that I’ll be seeing some of you again in my 12-week class—which I can tell you more about when we’re done—but some of you may only be here for today. No matter which boat you’re in, I want to do my best to make sure all of you go home better prepared than when you got here.
“So, I want to ask each of you: what are you hoping to get out of this class today?” He let the question hang for a moment before adding: “And this is also a good time for you to ask questions if you have any.”
