He didn’t know why he had found himself right here at the Slateport outskirts.[break][break]

It was strange, really.[break][break]

But then again he was just here to look around since he had some free time on his hands. Hoping that he would be able to find something of interest, he looked around warily. One could never be too careful when it came to going around alone in the area due to its rather unsavory reputation.[break][break]

He was hoping that he didn’t have to resort to bringing out a Pokémon companion, otherwise things would get really sticky. His eyes continued to dart around, looking over each and every place where there could be unsavory individuals hiding to jump on him.[break][break]

Hopefully they’re all behaving… he thought to himself as he continued to look around, hands in his pockets grasped around a Pokéball just in case he needed to throw out a companion quickly.

Chloe wasn't the type of girl who liked to admit to defeat or ask for help. Both, in her mind, showed weakness and the last thing she wanted to show others was her weakness. She already knew they would look down on her because she was missing a very important sense: Sound. She knew it because her family did it. A role of the family was to show support, but unfortunately only few actually did. The support wasn't enough for her to stay home, though. Oh no, not while her tyrant father was still around barking orders.

As she wandered the streets of Slateport, she recognized she had to admit defeat in the form of her being completely lost. Her sense of direction wasn't the greatest, which was why she had her Persian companion Empress around. Chloe can count on her hand how many times Empress willingly retreated into her Pokeball, but that was an endeavor she knew she willingly had to cancel as the battle was more often lost than won. But she soon knew she couldn't rely on the feline companion as her sense of direction led her to food spilled over from a garbage can.

"Eww Empress. C'mon, you know better than to eat trash-" Her chiding was interrupted as soon as her furry companion began to growl. She looked in the direction of Empress' hostility to see a group of three men nearby. They approached the duo with a smug look and Empress instinctively pushed Chloe back as she backed away as well.

"I-I'm just grabbing my Persian from the trash... I don't want any trouble, really." She really didn't want Empress to attack these men as the feline often attacked first then asked questions later--Like the protective companion that she was. Chloe was so busy with Empress and trying to reign her in that she didn't notice another man approaching the scene as well.

Maybe it was divine providence that led him here today.[break][break]

He was about to turn tail and head down a different way when he saw someone—specifically, a young female with cat ears, if he was seeing things right—trying to retrieve a feline Pokémon from an overturned trash can.[break][break]

He could only guess why the Pokémon had gone straight for the trash can, however there were men approaching her in an attempt to either mug her, or take her someplace else and do things that he could only shake his head to…[break][break]

“Carina, go,” he said softly as he sent out his Ribombee, appearing in a flash of red light before taking an aerial bow. “Chuck a Pollen Puff at the men, would you?” he added a few moments later as the little dual-type then buzzed out of sight, its minute size working to its advantage.[break][break]

At the same time, he sent out his Lucario. Gesturing to the jackal Pokémon to keep quiet, he then pointed at the scene before walking forward, and hoping to catch the men by surprise.[break][break]

The Ribombee had already flitted close to where the men were about to surround the young woman, and in its arms was a purple Pollen Puff, ready to throw at the nearest ruffian who would dare open its mouth to talk with her.

Persian would let out a Screech upon the first Pokemon who would let out an attack.

The men who approached Chloe didn't seem to like her answer. Or believe her answer. She wasn't sure as they didn't appear to seem like they bought it, or cared for that matter. One of the men, the bald one, mentioned something about Chloe looking like 'Nothing but trouble', yet as soon as he spoke a small ball of... something appeared seemingly out of nowhere and landed square into his mouth. She wondered that came from, but she didn't have much time to think it over as the other men shouted something about 'the girl attacked us' and letting out their Pokemon: A Stunky, Mightyena, and Nincada.

"Wait no, I didn't do that!" Chloe exclaimed, but it didn't matter because Empress was already in between Chloe and the Pokemon, ready to defend her companion at any cost. Chloe spied the Pokemon who made the first move and it was a small, cute Rimbombee that was evidently on her side. Where did she come from? Chloe didn't have time to think of that question. Without instruction from Chloe, Empress would let out a Screech the moment one of the Pokemon moved to attempt to attack Chloe.

Luckily this Ribombee had an owner—and while she didn’t mind fighting with him telling her what to do, this was one of the times she had free rein on what to do next. Snickering softly, another purple Pollen Puff was thrown at another man who was yapping on about something—before a sweet-smelling aroma permeated the area.[break][break]

Seeing that the situation was getting dire with the appearance of more Pokémon to rough the woman up, Alexei had to act fast![break][break]

Sending the Lucario forward, a sudden burst from Extreme Speed drove the Lucario between the space of the wall behind the last man (who had a Mightyena out) before materializing as close as he could where the Ribombee was now spinning another purple Pollen Puff.[break][break]

Meanwhile Alexei…[break][break]

…had decided to come in with a rather ostentatious entrance. Having called his Braviary out of its Friend Ball, he then rode up into the tight space before ever so casually asking Kyouya to screech at the men from where he was currently located.[break][break]

“Oi,” he began as he lowered his scarf. “You’d do well to leave the young lady alone.”[break][break]

The Lucario then turned to the young woman, releasing a reassuring auric wave (the better to calm her down) before standing in front of her, extending one paw protectively as if saying, ‘Don’t you dare harm her.’

Everything seemed to be happening at a rate that Chloe could barely keep up. The three men released their three Pokemon and while she believed her Persian would have her hands full, another Pokemon, a Lucario, came to the forefront. After the initial screech from Empress, another sound was heard, this time from something avian. The two of them looked up and spied a Braviary and a man who let out a warning.

Chloe was beginning to enter into the panic stage. She believed she was about to enter into a fight among Pokemon and while Empress was her protector, Chloe never purposely had her go and defend her. "Um..." she said carefully. "I think we're taking this a bit too far, gentleman." She added. "Let's just forget that this happened and we can head on our ways-" As she spoke she felt a wave of calming energy enter through her. She looked to see the man's Lucario friend with his hand up to her and she figured he sent the calming relief.

The men who were previously ready to start something between Chloe and themselves paused once after they collected themselves and when they spied the newcomer. Recognition set in their eyes as they cast glances to one another. 'Isn't he that gym leader...' Chloe heard them speak among themselves. They seemed to contemplate only briefly of what to do next. They were clearly outnumbered four-three, yet if need be Chloe could release her other Pokemon.

One of the men 'tsk' at her and mentioned how she was lucky now but wouldn't be so lucky the next time. Frowning, Chloe watched as the men sent their Pokemon away and wandered back down the alley they came from. Chloe turned her attention to the man with gratitude. "Thank-you," she said as Empress looked from him to his companions warily. "I was afraid we would have to battle... and I'm not too happy with the thought of Empress getting hurt." Not especially since she's not sure where the nearest PokeCenter was located.

The Lucario raised his eyebrows before giving the man perched atop the Braviary a rather pointed eye roll—did he have to be so flashy with his grand entrances? The Braviary continued to glare at the strange men, who’d recalled their Pokémon before dispersing in the same direction they’d come from.[break][break]

Once he was content they were gone, he came down for a landing before alighting from his Braviary’s back. Looking over at the young lady, he could only nod his head at her sentiment.[break][break]

“Clearly, this isn’t a nice place to end up in. How exactly did you end up here? This place isn’t safe,” he remarked, before the Lucario moved to stand guard at the other end, just behind the Braviary in case the men came back.[break][break]

“By the way… I hope you don’t mind, but are those legitimate cat ears?” he inquired, eyeing them curiously. Much as he wanted to touch them, he knew better not to unless he was given explicit permission. “Or do they have another purpose?”[break][break]

He hoped he hadn’t insulted the young lady and her Persian companion.

Chloe watched the men head back to whatever hole they crawled out of. Turning her gaze back to the saving group, she couldn't help but to let out a giggle upon seeing the Lucario's eye roll towards his companion. The man was correct when he stated that this place wasn't safe. "I'm trying to find an inn or something. Just... somewhere to stay tonight."

Clearly she wasn't anywhere near one she wanted to stay at if creeps like those hung around here. When she decided to run away, that was the last decision she made. She hadn't planned on where to go or what she would do once she ran away. Sure one of her goals was to find feline pokemon, but that was more of a hobby than anything else. What was she supposed to do?

The man then asked her a question that caused her to blush in response. She knew the man meant well, but the fact that she had to explain what they were for caused her to inwardly tense up and await the pity that would inevitably result.

"They're not real. They're... hearing aids. I like cats so um... they were made to resemble cat ears." She shrugged in response as if the question and her answer didn't bother her.

He had to double-check just in case there was someone looking for her, and return her to safety. It was at this point he saw his Lucario trying not to be so sarcastic in his direction.[break][break]

“Sorry about that, Vincent has never been subtle with his disdain toward me when I say something obvious,” he stammered a few moments later as he laughed before scratching the back of his head sheepishly. At the mention of the purpose of the cat ears, his eyes lit up.[break][break]

“That’s a great thing, combining something you love—it makes you look unique,” he nodded her way. It wasn’t until this point did he realize he had to do something, and he was about to get to that now.[break][break]

“Sorry if I forgot to introduce myself—I’m Alexei,” he began with another charming smile. “And you are—?”

"I... no I'm not," Chloe admitted with a sheepish grin. That would have been an ideal place to go to, yet she really didn't know where to go. She watched him hope off his Bravairy and when he asked if she brought other companions she motioned to the Pokeballs on her side hip. "I did. I don't think I could have made it this far without them." Not that she had to whip them out for anything, but the thought of them being with her was comforting. She wasn't sure if the man was referring to people or Pokemon, but at least he knew she didn't bring anyone with her.

She let out a smile with a shake of her head. "It's okay. Empress isn't so subtle with how she feels either. She will let you know how she feels." And with that Chloe turned to see what her feline companion was doing, and noted that she was busily trying to catch the Rimbombee in the air. "Empress! What are you doing she just saved us!" Empress let out of stubborn huff before making a last swat at the bee Pokemon before walking back to Chloe with an annoyed look.

"Sorry," she replied to the man before giving a small smile at his compliment for her ears. It was a comment she had not expected, but it was nice hearing it. "Thanks," she said as a blush formed. She was quite proud of the gift her brother gave to her and was sure to take special care of it now that she was out on her own.

"Oops, yes that's right. My name is Clot-" She paused as she was about to give her real name. "Chloe. My name is Chloe. It's nice to meet you Mr. Alexei."

Carina was hovering somewhere close to Alexei, simply because the Persian was trying to swat her out of the air and eat her! She let out a distressed noise, and it wasn’t until he noticed that she called her back his way.[break][break]

The Ribombee was about to spin a purple Pollen Puff and throw it at the Persian in a defensive manner because she didn’t like being batted at by strange Pokémon (unless they were her human companion’s own Pokémon she oversaw) but there you go.[break][break]

Thankfully, the Ribombee was free of her tormentor and came to sit down on Alexei’s shoulder, lightest of feather-touches indicating she was there. “Yes, Carina?” he asked her, before seeing a yellow Pollen Puff being given to him.[break][break]

“Oh, she—Carina wants you to try this,” he explained, embarrassed as he passed her the yellow, sticky, thread treat. “She always makes one and keeps asking me to try it, although I’m sure she wants another opinion about it.”[break][break]

Taking note of her name, he nodded.[break][break]

“So, Chloe, what brings you out to Hoenn?” he inquired of her a few moments later as he waited for her answer.

It appeared as the Ribombee did not like being swat at, which was understandable. It was a good thing she called Empress over as the bee-Pokemon looked as if she was about to defend herself. Chloe didn't need another situation occurring.

Chloe smiled at the small, cute Pokemon resting on Alexei's shoulder. "Really? Thanks. That's super sweet of her." She added and took hold of the Pollen Puff. She gave it a small nibble and beamed. "Wow, it's great!" she said before giving a piece to Empress who was already reaching for her hand to taste. It appeared the feline enjoyed the taste as she all put licked Chloe's hand off.

A blush appeared on her face as he asked her what brought her here to Hoenn. Though she wasn't a liar, she couldn't tell this man the truth--even if he was her savior.

"I'm here... to find my destiny," was the short answer of her reason for leaving Kalos. Maybe if they've gotten to know each other and she learns to trust him will she reveal her past, but she didn't want to get ahead of herself.

“You were so worried about your Pollen Puffs… well, there you have it. They like it, so stop worrying about things, okay?” he said in the Ribombee’s direction, who stood up for the briefest of moments before spinning on his shoulder for a few seconds and settling down again.[break][break]

“Sorry, she’s just—how do I put this, she’s concerned about how others would like her Pollen Puffs—the safe ones that can be eaten, of course! I mean, you did see the purple one she was about to throw at the men earlier, right? Those are the ones they should watch out for,” he added a few moments later.[break][break]

At the mention of ‘destiny’, he chuckled softly.[break][break]

“Doesn’t everyone,” he began quietly after a few moments of silence passed between them. “I came here to the region myself when I was sixteen. Been living here ever since,” he shared. It wasn’t until a few moments later did he realize he’d forgotten to ask her something…[break][break]

“Wait, do you have a place to stay at?” he inquired. “It’s not safe to be out here by yourself especially this time of evening.”

"Does she want to make it popular? If so then it will no doubt be a fan favorite!" She watched the little Pokemon flutter about which Chloe thought was quite cute. She nodded at Alexei's statement. "Your pollen puffs are great. And thanks for warning me about the purple ones. We will definitely avoid those." Chloe thought it was cute that the Ribombee was so concerned of her product. It reminded her of her older siblings who were very much perfectionists. Chloe could be at times too, but her mother always reminded her that mistakes were not an omen for the end of the world.

Chloe nodded to Alexei's short, rhetorical question. "That's true... I just needed to find mine immediately." As the silence grew between them she thought on the real reason why she left: Marriage. How could her father decide to wed her off to someone she barely knew? What little she knew of her 'fiance' was that he was a total jerk and careless. She looked up at the mention of his age when he came to Hoenn and she smiled. "Really? How coincidental. I'm sixteen too," she said with a small laugh. Maybe the two of them were meant to meet.

"I..." she started to say and paused. It was embarrassing to say that she didn't have a place to stay because she didn't want to come off as helpless and homeless. It wasn't as if she could help either situation, however. "I don't," she finally said while pushing her two index fingers together. "I was actually trying to head to town to find an Inn or something. Turns out I'm nowhere near where I have to be..."

You’re going to be just fine—you fuss over the smallest things, I swear,” he chuckled in the Ribombee’s direction, who had settled down on his shoulder with a cute little pout on her face. “Oh, come on—honestly, you stress so much. We can include them in the next charity bake sale we have, you know,” he added a few moments later.[break][break]

Now that the question of lodging had been posed, he looked around a few moments before letting out a little sigh.[break][break]

“Well, you’re in Slateport, however this is the outskirts of the city. Not exactly a nice place to get lost in especially at night as you’ve witnessed earlier, there’s lots of their kind about,” he hummed a few moments later. “I take you haven’t passed by the Pokémon Center yet?” he added.[break][break]

Allowing her a few moments to answer, he added afterward, “Well… if you don’t mind heading over to Fortree, I know a place I can get you set up with.”[break][break]

It was like—there was something that had drawn him to her. Not in the romantic sense, but in the way that he could see his immaturity in her at the time he had first arrived in Hoenn a decade ago. Maybe she needed some direction.[break][break]

“I mean—I have a place you can stay over at, if you wouldn’t mind being close to nature?” he offered a few moments later.
