He couldn’t help but act like a big kid. Now was one of those times.[break][break]

Why now?[break][break]

It was his very first time away from Hoenn—he’d agreed to accompany Ruby back to her hometown in the faraway Galar region, and it was his first damned-ass time riding the Corviknight flying taxi![break][break]

“You didn’t tell me they were this big!” he shouted over the roaring wind, hanging onto his Wooloo, William, for dear fucking life. The little sheep Pokémon with a little crown perched atop its head of wool was tucked between his arms, bleating to all hell after having seen so. Many. Other. Wooloo just like him when they’d first arrived in the area![break][break]

Ladies and gentlemen, the Fortree Flying-themed Gym Leader, reduced to such a big kid squealing as they flew through the skies in one of the Corviknight flying taxis.[break][break]

“Look, I haven’t been on anything like this,” he explained to his pink-haired companion, pulling his head back in and letting the Wooloo hop off his arm and onto the space beside him. “I mean—look at this! This is going to be a huge thing if and when it arrives in Hoenn!” he continued to exclaim.[break][break]

Good lord, he was so excitable today.

"I thought you knew!" Ruby called out back to him, giggling quietly to herself. The cab was certainly quite small, but it was such a familiar feeling. After staying in Hoenn for so long, the air at home simply seemed to feel so much more alive. The dark yet familiar forests down below, the Hammerlocke skyline behind them, even Wyndon was visible from all the way up here. She didn't want to admit it, but she sort of missed home. Not that it would stop her from exploring, but it was definitely nice to come back for a while.

Turning to face him in the small cab, Ruby reached over to gently pat the Wooloo atop his lap as she spoke. "As if you wouldn't try to urge the League to go for it! You have like, the influence you know! Honestly, it would make traveling around from city to city so much easier." She laughed softly once again as they finally began to descend through the trees down closer to the ground.

Almost immediately, the most striking feature would be just how dark it is beneath the trees. The heavy leaf canopy letting almost no light in at all, especially surprising by how far above they were from the ground. The trees here were absolutely massive, with the only light coming from down on the ground. Small specks of glowing mushrooms illuminating the landscape as they pushed through.

She had taken this flight so many times, the magic of the view was almost lost on her. And yet, Ruby's eyes were wide, staring at Alexei as she eagerly anticipated his reaction. The city wasn't even in sight yet. Giddy with excitement, she leaned against the back of her seat a bit more to force herself to remain calm. And yet, a teasing smile began to spread across her face, all in good fun. "You're going to trip over so many logs in the dark, I just know it."

“You know how size can suspend disbelief when you only see it in pictures, right? This thing’s way bigger than the pictures show it to be!” he exclaimed as the Wooloo let out an appreciative bleating noise once Ruby reached over to pet him.[break][break]

“I’m so sorry he’s just a really vain creature, I can’t even,” he added with a laugh a few moments later as the crown jingled lightly atop his head. “He is the first Wooloo to appear in Hoenn, after all—I checked myself,” he explained with a wave as William began to ask for more pats on the head.[break][break]

“Alright, alright, you crazy thing,” he chuckled as he pat the Wooloo on the head, sending the crown jingling on its perch. Turning back to ponder on what she had suggested, he drew his lips into a thin line for the briefest of moments.[break][break]

“I’d have to outsource a bunch of Corviknight from here… since I’m trying to think of how to make the industry like, viable in Hoenn altogether the transport would have to be something native to the region… like, I don’t know, Salamence?” he pondered quietly. Not until he looked up when he realized they were headed down did he notice that the environs were changing.[break][break]

Looking outside, he could only watch how the sunlit skies suddenly changed to foliage, before the descent came even quicker and the entire place was shrouded almost in darkness. Having to blink a few times, he had to squint in order to pick out the tiny, soft, weird glowing mushrooms that were sprouting out of the ground; the only source of illumination in this strange world.[break][break]

“How—how can trees grow this thick? This high, even? It’s nothing—absolutely nothing—like Fortree,” he said in hushed tones. The Wooloo let out a curious bleating noise, trying to hop up and down to see why everything had gotten so dark so suddenly.[break][break]

“Wait, what?” he said presently, turning to face her once more. “You—you didn’t tell me about logs in the dark! Only the glowing night lights—I mean, the mushrooms!”[break][break]

Boy, he really was a tourist.

Ruby simply laughed at the antics of the shiny Wooloo. After all, she was quite used to the Pokemons in general. Her mom had a Dubwool who was quite fun to cuddle with in the past. Regardless, she would simply pat his head once more as she focused her attention on Alexei's reaction to Ballonlea. She couldn't help but giggle, a hand moving to cover her intense smile as she watched. He was practically like a kid in a candy shop. As if he was being dropped into a fantasy land that excited him to no end. Perhaps, from his perspective, he might as well have been.

"Well, what else are the glowing mushrooms for silly?" She reached over to gently nudge his shoulder as the flying taxi continued it's descent and began to head towards the actual town. It was almost like an oasis, a beacon of light standing out strong against the darkness. A beautiful town built up around the massive roots of the trees, and the gym stadium looming in the background. Mushrooms dotting the landscape wherever lights did not, an almost magical aura filling the town, the fairy theme quite evident.

"Welcome, to Ballonlea! I practically went to school around here, actually. But I live in a bit of a brighter area, closer to the edge of the woods." She grinned softly, waiting for the flying taxi to land on the ground with a gentle thud before casually stepping outside of it. Quickly taking in a deep breath, she spun around with a wide smile on her face. It was great to be back home. Turning back around, her smile simply widened as she immediately spoke. "Wanna look around before we head home? You know, be the tourist you were always meant to be, hehe!"

“Wait, are you telling me the mushrooms are just leading up to the town proper?” he gushed, watching as the Corviknight Taxi came in lower and slower. It really was so much to take in all at once! He knew that his boyfriend would get a kick out of seeing the Ballonlea mushrooms since it reminded him of fairies at night, and faerie circles, and…[break][break]

The Wooloo let out a bleat, bringing him out of his silent internal gushing. They had finally landed and he was still inside said taxi. “Arceus, I’m so sorry I just—“ he stammered, chuckling as he let the Wooloo jump out of his hold and he picked up the backpack by his feet.[break][break]

Once the taxi had departed, he then turned to Ruby and asked, “You—you did pay the guy for the fare, right?” before taking everything around him in awe and wonder.[break][break]

“You—you mind if I take a picture? Several? I know someone back in Hoenn would absolutely love to see this!” he continued to gush as he dug around his pocket for his phone and finally pulled it out.[break][break]

Quickly setting it to ‘Camera’ mode, he then began snapping photos of the scenery in general, focusing particularly on the glowing mushrooms.[break][break]

“Of—of course! I want to see what Galar has to offer! Is it true… is it true curry is a big thing here?” he inquired as he followed her, looking around and taking in everything he could see while snapping pictures and sending them back to Florian Laurel.

"Of course I did! Don't be silly." She laughed a little bit, hoisting her backpack a little higher up onto her back. Digital payments existed, after all. "Why, I'm surprised you even remembered to think of that with how distracted you are!"

Ruby simply couldn't stop her smile from growing as wide as physically possible as he spun around to take as many pictures as he seemingly possibly could. Of course, she couldn't help but try to interrupt at least one of them, posing rather silly with a happy chuckle. While both of them might have looked tourists to outsiders, all it would take is for Ruby to open her mouth and reveal her Galarian accent to dismiss that thought.

At the topic of curry, she simply rolled her eyes. "Are you telling me you've never once had any Galarian dishes at all? Curry is like, practically its own food group here! Trainers get together at huge camps and just make it together. Honestly, it's quite fun!"

She'd finally reach up to attempt to take his hand, slowly leading him through the town and towards the gym. Almost as if she was a tour guide, she began to casually speak. "The gym circuit here is an annual event. It's a big deal, but it also means I can't just challenge the gyms whenever I want. Still, the gyms themselves look really cool! Huuuuge arenas!"

Pausing in approximately the downtown of this small city, Ruby spoke up once more. "So! Shopping? Or are you still too focused on photos, huh?"

“You know how the Galarian influence only started hitting Hoenn recently, right? I suspect that Curry has yet to take off formally. I think it’s because of either the way it’s made, or something?” he ventured a guess, chuckling as a few of the photos he was sending back to Florian Laurel had her suddenly appearing in it like a true S-class photo bomber of the cute variety.[break][break]

“I can’t believe this place, it’s—you know it’s nothing like Fortree or Mistralton,” he continued as he allowed himself to be led by Ruby through the area. William the Wooloo was walking beside him, cute little crown jingling merrily as the group moved forward with his pink-haired companion commentating.[break][break]

“Wait, wait—hold up, so the Gyms here don’t work the same way they do back in Hoenn? Or the rest of the world?” he inquired curiously. “You mentioned it’s an annual event so it’s… wow,” he dropped off in silent wonder as he caught a good look at the building in the distance—it far outstripped the size of his own outdoor arena by miles, so to speak.[break][break]

He was still buzzing, hopped up on the experience as he quickly set his camera to ‘Panorama’ mode and stood still for a few moments, capturing a near 360-degree view of the place where they had come to stop temporarily.[break][break]

“Is there—is there anything you can recommend for me to take home back to Fortree? Like, anything good? If the trip wasn’t so long I would definitely want to take the curry along!” he enthused.
