"Am I?" He follows her gaze to the remains of his clothes. While it was true that he'd had experiences, the role of a long-term lover instead of an experimental one-night-stand was new to him. He turns his attention back to Emma. "I want to know if there's anything you feel is missing."[break][break]

He is not an insecure man. He is bold, dominant, prideful — but as a lover, he wishes to be attentive, adaptive.

Emma regards him curiously, though her expression and posture seem stiff. The questions he's asking are beyond her realm of comfort - and yet it stirs warmth in her chest that she hadn't expected. His concern meant a lot to her, more than she'd care to admit.[break][break]

She casts her own line, baiting, waiting. If he can ask personal questions and insist transparency, she would take his bait in return.

The realisation is sudden: she hadn't noticed. He's surprised, at first, then strangely comforted. If it wasn't obvious that this was his first relationship... well, he must be doing something right.[break][break]

Emma sucks in a breath subconsciously, holding it as he admits his feelings. He's not shy, not like her. She's watching him confess how deeply he cares for her in slow motion. She had already known, already feared the truth - but there was no hiding it now.[break][break]

For once, she's genuinely at a loss for what to say. Instinct drives her to burn the bridge where they stand, plunge back into the cold and cull whatever this had started to become.[break][break]

But she had boarded that plane with him for a reason. Crossed the threshold between... whatever they had been into uncharted territory. [break][break]

"Caring for me is a mistake."[break][break]

And yet it's one she finds herself making in return.

Emma seems adrift, caught off-guard by his honesty. Gavin doesn't falter, doesn't care if she catches him staring.[break][break]

A mistake, she insists, and his lip twitches.[break][break]

Caring for anything was a mistake. That was her mindset, right? She didn't seem to care even for her Pokemon, at times, but he'd also witnessed her interactions with his Alcremie and her own Slurpluff, and had a feeling she was coming around. She'd come around to this, too.[break][break]

"Maybe." His shoulders lift in a shrug. "But so far, I like the consequences."[break][break]

His tone lifts, teasing, an attempt to put her at ease.

For the first time in a long time, Emma's cheeks flush with emotion. She's wearing them plainly on her sleeve, or in this case the wide-eyed expression on her face.[break][break]

Because he's staring, unabashedly, his gaze warm and unwavering. It's unexpected and she doesn't know how to respond, even though just moments ago they had been tangled up in each other, unafraid of their intent or desire.[break][break]

"Are you flirting with me?"[break][break]

Her response is flat, genuine disbelief making her sound almost breathless.

His jovial air relaxes into something more serious, and he returns the smile with a fond one of his own.[break][break]

"I didn't mean to put you on the spot." They dealt with situations like these in different ways, and that was fine. "I want to make sure you're happy, that's all."[break][break]

She has become his light source in the darkness of their line of work; he wishes to be the same.

Emma doesn't flinch or shy away when he steps closer. It feels natural now to allow him to approach with such confidence. His hand moves to caress her cheek and her jaw and the warmth of his touch is inviting.[break][break]

She subtly leans into it, eyes closing.[break][break]

Even still, despite the comfort and security she finds with him, the cruel claws of dread linger in the corners of her mind. [break][break]

And its because of this that she pulls away slightly, eyes finding his only to look away. [break][break]
