A strange duo they make: the Guardian of the Seas and a man who'd feared the deep for as long as he could remember.

The submarine's docking bay opens to the vast ocean beyond, darkness cut through by the diving light at Gavin's hip. Lugia presents a sinister silhouette in the gloom, wings darker than the water around them and red eyes drinking the pale luminance.

Gavin's heart thuds hard in his chest, betraying him, but Lugia's telepathic timbre cuts through anxious thoughts without judgement or mockery.

You need not fear when I am with you.

A ferocious, defensive part of him thinks to argue as he would with any other: I am not afraid. But Lugia sees past his stoic veneer to the memories of a frightened child kneeling on unforgiving tile and choking on water. The cold, cutting commentary of his father is swept away by the legend's reassuring rumble, corrupt though it was by the poison that coursed through its veins.

Okay. Amber eyes meet red, and find no malevolence there. Gavin kicks off to swim beneath Lugia's shadow. Together, then. I'm sure you'd love to stretch your wings.

He is not long into avatarship before he grows bold.

"Train with us," he requests, turning to the Lugia who has claimed a perch upon a rock half-submerged by the tide. It lounges much like a cat might, spiked tail flicking through the surf and scattering sea spray. "Teach me how to use your power properly."

It does not deign to respond by thought or voice; often, the corrupt legend remained silent but in the heat of battle where its aggression held greater sway. Gavin takes it for refusal and is about to return to his gathered shadow Pokémon when a powerful gust nearly knocks him off his feet. Lugia takes to the skies, dark wings casting long shadows over a makeshift island battlefield. Its majesty still leaves him awed, even as its vessel, and the Pokémon at Gavin's side turn from rowdy to reverent.

Clouds overhead darken to match shadowed sands, and rain begins to fall.

The winds are Gavin's warning as they pick up from gust to gale, howling in his ears and drawing in shadow. There is a beat before he realises the cyclones are aimed at his Pokémon, at him, and pure instinct sees foul miasma pour from him in earnest. He breathes it in and like a shot of adrenaline feels it surge through his veins. His reflexes quicker, but not quick enough—

He lands hard on his back, breath driven from his lungs. A swipe of Lugia's tail kicks up sand, metaphorical salt in the wound as it gets in his eyes and gasping mouth. He gags and rolls over onto his side, coughing and spitting grit, and the rumble in Lugia's throat almost sounds like laughter. It was toying with him as a predator toys with its prey; it could easily wound, but chose instead to revel in an imbalance of power. The ground trembles beneath Gavin as Lugia lands nearby.

You will be faster, next time.

But Gavin is stubborn. Determined. Gavin will not go down easy. Breathing hard, he struggles back to his feet. His spine aches from the impact.

"You're going easy on me," he accuses, and shakes his head. "Don't."

The next time, he is faster.
