[attr="class","witness"]Although she's pretty sure she somehow made him uncomfortable again, Francie is smiling. He said her name, not a title or her surname, her first name. That's progress in her mind! And it's an exciting thing. But so is everything else to Francie.

She turns into her own tent for the night, letting Louie lay with her and Lincoln lay in the tent's opening. The three of them have always been this way, willing to protect her at all costs. She's not sure what she'd do without them.

Be an anxious mess, probably.

Morning strikes with the rise of the sun. Louie and Lyonel switch places, which causes Francie to stir. She lays for a moment with Lyonel, giving him pets and gratitude for keeping watch over the night. Once he's asleep, she returns him and walks out of the tent to stretch and wanders off with Lincoln to use the bathroom, leaving Louie at the camp.

Upon her return, she's cooking up a breakfast of sorts for everyone, humming happily as she does so. Sure there's a few thoughts spared toward where they will adventure that day, but she doesn't pay it much thought. Too busy humming to a song she had stuck in her head.

It takes him no time at all to bed down and fall asleep. Rockruff tucks himself in the most uncomfortable position to give Matthew a sore back in the morning but otherwise - the campsite is filled with Matthew's not-so-subtle snoring.[break][break]

And when the sun peeks through the thin fabric of his tent, followed by the warm smell of breakfast, Matthew searches blindly for the zipper. He's blinking sleep out of his eyes and reaching for a shirt to tug over his head as he steps out.[break][break]

Wait, is she humming?[break][break]

Matthew stands up to his full height, pressing on his back to stretch as he blinks himself awake. The shirt is tugged over his head and smoothed down as he quietly observes the woman preparing breakfast and humming a song. He smiles.

[attr="class","witness"]Francie had stopped stirring when the shirtless body was seen. It was only the nudge of Louie's impatient nose that had her blinking and correcting herself, and thank goodness! Not that she knew it, but Matthew had stopped stretching and put on a shirt about that time.

"Morning!"

Francie's powering through her blush, because that's what big girls do.

"Between your snoring and Louie, it looks like the pokemon of the area got the message of dominance. I take it you slept well?"

If somebody snored like that and didn't sleep well, then what was the point of the snoring?!

Matthew blinks slowly as she greets him. Is she blushing? Why is she blushing?[break][break]

He has half a mind to glance over his shoulder to see if there's someone else she's looking at - but he knows it's just him. Hmm.[break][break]

But she mentions his snoring, wording it in a playful yet teasing manner. It encourages an awkward chuckle out of him as he scratches the back of his head, closing his eyes and smiling.[break][break]

"What can I say? I can sleep well after a good meal."[break][break]

He eventually closes the distance between them to sit next to the fire with her. He seems fixated on whatever it she's preparing. It smells amazing.

[attr="class","witness"]Francie is beginning to realize that maybe Matthew just didn't get a good home cooked meal. Some Rangers were like that. So go-go-go! that they missed out on a good meal. It had her a little worried, but he also was clearing in good shape so her worry was short lived.

"I'm glad you liked it! I'll have to give you the recipe. It's super simple, namely in this kind of climate. If we fine some pinap berries, I can make a really good citrus stir fry."

Francie puts what she managed in a 'bowl' and holds it out for Matthew to take, having already plated hers and her boys some as they chowed down.

Matt wasn't an especially talented cook - and he didn't often have time to prepare his own home-cooked meals. His diet usually consisted of bar food and beer. Thankfully, he hadn't been given the misfortune of a beer gut. [break][break]

Maybe it helped working out literally every day almost nonstop. Pushing himself to the brink seemed be a hobby of his. This is probably the least he's done in a long time - to be given the luxury of waking on his own, no obligations but whatever pace Francie wanted to set.[break][break]

It was nice.[break][break]

He chuckles as she offers the recipe later. It was a nice gesture but he couldn't help but fear he may never make it himself. Sometimes he wondered if he just didn't put enough effort in himself.[break][break]

"That sounds wonderful."[break][break]

A bowl is extended to him and he takes it, expression eager and appreciative as he begins to dig in.

[attr="class","witness"]Their breakfast was shared well enough, and as they finished and packed up camp. Francie had made sure to give a little chit-chat here and there between the two of them. She had taken out her metal detector and was swiping it along the ground as she walked. Her lycanrocs sniffed and played, the midday and dusk forms anyway.

Once they approached a certain area, Louie gave a low growl and Lincoln followed suit. Francie stopped walking and glanced up and around, her eyes falling on a few different monkey type pokemon in the trees. A few mankeys, some chimchars even. But what really got her attention, was the way one specific oranguru pulled at her mind.

It must have been using telepathy, and it caused Francie to give a small smile. Thanks to her gym challenge with Isra Nightingale, she knew good and well how to allow that oranguru the chance to enter her mind. It had likely reached out to Matthew as well, and she turned to look at him.

"The oranguru probably just wants to know why we're here, and it's smart enough to search our minds for the answer."

Matthew is receptive to her idle chatter, doing the best he can to respond despite his own awkwardness. He was typically a man of few words, preferring to stick to the task at hand. Even still, his poor attempts to further conversation don't seem to bother Francie - she is kind and warm and eager to talk even if she's the one encouraging the conversation.[break][break]

He's even become comfortable enough to point out things that fascinate him along the way - or things he thinks Francie might like to see. Said things included various funny-shaped trees, rock formations, random shells strewn along the beach. None of it is what they're looking for, but that doesn't seem to bother him.[break][break]

Everything seems to be going well until Matthew feels a prick at the back of his mind. Thoughts come to the surface that he doesn't remember thinking, and he glances to Francie - who seems to be smiling. Her attention is far-away and staring off into the distance at a shape in the trees. His brow furrows in unease as he approaches and stands next to her.[break][break]

"We should still be careful, Francie. Wild Pokemon - especially powerful psychics - are dangerous."

[attr="class","witness"]Francie didn't leave eye contact with the oranguru that was in the trees. She simply allowed the oranguru a little rummaging through her mind. It was like being tickled, in her head, and she couldn't help but think it was super cool.

Yes, she was naive enough to assume it wouldn't attack. But she figured, if she showed no interest in bothering any of them, then it wouldn't attack her.

"It's okay. He's not threatened by us."

Louie relaxed, deciding to trust Francie. Lincoln relaxed as much as he usually could, which meant eating his ear and then chewing on his foot like it was naughty.

Just after those words, when everything seemed fine, Francie got a small tug on her mind. It didn't feel wrong, or like she should worry, but that she should... move? She shifted over next to Matthew, her lycanrocs followed her. It was then that a passimian touched down, giving a holler at them, and just as he reared his piece of fruit up to throw at them, a future sight crashed into it, and caused it to roll and faint.

The oranguru descended then, snorting at the passimian, before beginning to walk toward where they had been heading.

Francie blinked a few times before grinning.

"Whoa! That was amazing!! Did you see that Matthew?!"

Where Francie found it to be like a tickle, Matthew's stubbornness made it feel like someone was pulling a spoon through sludge. It got stuck, pulled hard, strained against his mental fortress. He wasn't good at keeping the Oranguru out by any means, but he was adamant in his discomfort.[break][break]

And it brings him no amount of comfort to see the woman's Lycanroc relax. They seem to respond to her unease and, as soon as she made it clear she was calm and comfortable, they deemed there to be no threat.[break][break]

But all Matthew could see were red flags and the crackle of tension. He based it on his ranger intuitition, or his understanding that wild Pokemon were unpredictable. [break][break]

So as soon as a fruit or rock or whatever it was was almost thrown by another monkey Pokemon, Matthew is reaching for the woman who had, fortunately, already drawn closer to him. His hand is rough as he catches her elbow, tucking her behind him and blocking her from harm.[break][break]

In the moment his awkwardness and clumsy conversationalist personality has hardened into severity and confidence. This is his element, his duty as a ranger.[break][break]

Fortunately, the Oranguru descends on the Passimian responsible with a future sight. The movement is shocking and he struggles to compose himself, even when Francie exclaims about how amazing it was. [break][break]

[attr="class","witness"]Matthew being protective over her isn't thought of one way or the other by Francie. It's sweet, yes, but she's used to people trying to protect her. Apparently she seemed like the type to need protecting, which she supposed was fine with her. She let it happen, at any rate. Though she did worry Matthew was putting himself in danger.

They both had that in common; figures.

"Are you okay?"

She asked Matthew as she walked past him and toward where the oranguru was leading them.

"Because, I think he wants us to follow him, and I mean... that'd be cool."

He lets go of her arm and glances at her when she poses him a question he wasn't expecting. Was he okay? Did he completely misunderstand the situation? What was happening?[break][break]

The Oranguru seems to be sauntering off - lingering of course, because it wants them to follow - but making little effort to make that abundantly clear. Or maybe Matthew is just suspicious. [break][break]

That much is obvious in the bewildered expression on Matt's face when Francie suggests following it. She referred to it as 'cool', as in, following this wild Pokemon into the deep was 'cool.' He wasn't sure he saw it that way, but he was starting to put together that Francie was not some innocent bystander or civilian he was sent to protect on a mission. [break][break]

Francie went into these situations without hesitation, like this was common. That had to indicate something about her hardiness, right? Or sheer dumb luck.[break][break]

"Uhh... sure? That'd be cool. Maybe. If the Oranguru doesn't turn around and eat us, I suppose."

Francie was there if only to point out the obvious things. She then gave Matthew a reassuring smile before putting a hand on his shoulder.

"Look at it this way. If it was a ghost type, I'd be worried. But it's psychic, and it's leading us forward. If this was a trap, the Passimian would have succeeded, but we were protected. Maybe it needs help, you know? With an injured tribe mate or something."

Wasn't that what rangers were supposed to assume anyway? Or maybe Matthew was just on edge. Either way, Francie was there to shed an optimistic light on the situation.

Instead, he glances at the hand that rests on his shoulder and back to the face it belongs to. His brow furrows, clearly not convinced but not willing to admit she might be right. He's overreacting, surely. Rangers were supposed to be Pokemon smart as much wilderness smart. Clearly, Matthew was the latter.[break][break]

He exhales, shoulders sagging in defeat.

Francie thought on that a moment as she waited for Matthew to walk beside her toward where the oranguru was slowly leading them.

While her carefree and optimistic manner made it seem like she was running head first into something, she was not. Francie knew better than to trust everything and anything. Really, if there had not been the telepathy involved, showing her honesty and safety in waves, she wouldn't have bothered.

Because the funny thing about telepathy is the fact that even pokemon can't trick somebody with their raw emotions. Everything is left open and on the table.

"I'm sure the oranguru won't mind... speaking of, what do you think it needs help with?"
