She is in and out of consciousness while they work to combat the reaction her body is undergoing from being drowned. They've hooked her up to fluids and iv medication to bring her body back to a stable condition. She's asleep when Gavin first arrives in her room.[break][break]

Her breathing is ragged and crackly, fogging up the oxygen mask that eventually gets swapped for those nose tubes. She's not in terrible condition, just severe. There's a difference, probably. [break][break]

The doctor is intent on keeping her overnight despite Emma's would-be concerns if she were alert enough to protest. The antibiotics are kicking her ass and making her drowsy. Perhaps there's a bit of a sedative in there to curb her fight or flight.[break][break]

At the end of her bed, Emma's Slurpuff wilts sadly at the poor condition of her trainer. She's unsure how to help other than to sulk.[break][break]

Emma's breath hitches and it wakes her for a moment as she sits up slightly, a hoarse cough rattling her chest. She's alarmed when she blinks the sleep from her eyes, pulling at the tubes in her nose because they tickle.

Gavin starts slightly as Emma's breath hitches, snapping his head away from the television and toward the sound. He expects this time to be like the last, but the racking cough that follows has roused the wolf from her slumber.[break][break]

"Hey, hey, careful..."[break][break]

His voice is soft but firm as he reaches to gently grasp her wrists with his good hand, an attempt to stop her from ripping the tubes out of her nose. He had no idea what consequences such an action would have, and he didn't care to find out.[break][break]

"You're in the hospital, Em. Those tubes are helping you breathe, right now."[break][break]

He doesn't let go until he's satisfied that she won't botch her treatment, then threading his fingers through hers. While they still felt cold against his own warmth, she was at least no longer shaking.

It takes her a second to adjust, to take in her surroundings. The grogginess is terrifying, like a weight is on her chest and her mind. She can't think clearly, all she knows is that her chest hurts and she's not home.[break][break]

Home.[break][break]

A voice speaks softly to her but her ears are ringing with panic, muted by the sound of her rapid, rattling breath.[break][break]

Hands find hers and she flinches at the touch but unable to pull away. Her stiffness fades, however, when Gavin pulls her hands from her face and she recognizes the man.[break][break]

Home.[break][break]

He threads his fingers through hers and the motion is so natural she feels the panic fade away. If she were capable of such raw emotion, she might have sobbed. It's possible that tears linger behind her eyes, overwhelming emotion working hard to tear down her walls.[break][break]

"Gavin."[break][break]

She's breathless, her voice is but a strained whisper. The purple bruises around her neck are dark and painful, telling a tale of struggle and desperation. It hurts even to swallow.

She is wild with panic, a cornered animal desperate to flee, and Gavin can only hold out until anxiety is replaced by a spark of recognition in her eyes. His relief is dizzying, overwhelming.[break][break]

His name upon her lips, barely a whisper, would normally be enough to make him shiver. Now, he squeezes her hand and offers what little comfort he can from his position at her bedside.[break][break]

"Hey, you."[break][break]

It's fond, teasing, but not devoid of the concern he feels. Her bruises have turned dark and angry and her breathing sounds more labored without the steadiness of sleep. The last thing she needs is a reminder of how bad things are.[break][break]

"They're keeping you overnight, but I've arranged to stay." He states it as if it hadn't been an argument that had put a lot of strain on an already tired mind. His lip quirks. "Wouldn't want to abandon you to their nagging."

He squeezes her hands and she forces herself to fall back in her bed. It groans against her weight, uncomfortable and stiff. She's stiff even as she clings to his hands, her fingers still interlaced. Her shaking resumes slightly, only as a result of nerves and fear rather than weakness.[break][break]

"Hey."[break][break]

It's all she can really muster. Her mouth is dry and her throat is so sore that it brings her to tears. Weakness is a side she never shows, and she can't help but show it now. She's been through worse, but she's suffered it in silence and in private. Sheltered in the dark and away from prying eyes. But Gavin's eyes are prying now, as are every nurse that passes by their room.[break][break]

Confusion and raw panic fills her expression at his statement. The warmth in her face pales at the thought of staying here.[break][break]

"I want to go home."

Fear is not something that either of them are comfortable putting on display. It's for this reason that he provides comfort rather than judgement, his grip on her hand acting as the anchor to safety.[break][break]

There is something so incredibly vulnerable in her statement that twists in his heart, and his expression contorts with empathy. Hospitals were one of his least favourite places to be; he'd been relieved to know that he didn't have to spend the night laid up in bed with nurses fussing over him, but Emma hadn't been so lucky. Pneumonia was no joke.[break][break]

"I know." He's powerless to do anything about it. "But it's better for your health, love."[break][break]

He's done his best to care for her in the past when she's stumbled home with various injuries, but this wasn't something he could treat. He knew basic first aid, but he was no doctor. He couldn't have helped her to breathe, or provided antibiotics.[break][break]

"I'll stay with you, though, I promise."[break][break]

He scoots the chair closer to the hospital bed, providing whatever warmth and closeness he could.

It takes all of her concentration to focus on his hands in hers, in the comfort he's desperate to give. Perhaps she's numb or her fear is restricting her ability to see reason because his efforts are nearly in vain.[break][break]

Her eyes dart around the room, looking for exits, escapes. They linger on the window next to her, fully aware that it's likely locked. [break][break]

Hospitals were dangerous. They asked questions. The scars that riddle her body are horrific in nature - some of them at least. Hospitals kept tabs on things like that, directed concerns to police. The last thing she needed was to be questioned.[break][break]

But Gavin's love brings her back, grounds her. She finds his eyes again and the raw emotion she presents him softens just slightly.[break][break]

And he promises her he will stay and she feels the warm damp slip down the length of her cheek. She's crying.[break][break]

Emma trembles with a silent sob as he scoots closer, she rests her forehead in the hollow of his neck, desperate for comfort. Something foreign to her.
