From a small ranch just outside of Verdanturf, Pokemon have been going missing for weeks. The rancher has brought people in to help, but no evidence has been found. They've started to think the man's trying to pull some kind of fraud, and help has dried up.[break][break]

Gavin and Marcel aren't here to help.[break][break]

Instead, Gavin leads his friend away from the main city roads — currently packed with people due to a public barbecue — and off to a worn trail that cuts through the farmland. They can't afford to be caught up in the celebration.[break][break]

"I come this way all the time." Dry grasses crunch underfoot, a product of the frequent heat waves the region has endured. "Good way to stay out of sight, and the guy that owns the place rarely seems to come out this far."[break][break]

Sheep graze lazily in the fields, seemingly indifferent to the human presence.

"it's pretty nice," he says. even the yellowed grass had its charm--when it wasn't getting in his shoes, at least.

soon enough, the topic returns to work. "they've been doing well--" the organisers of the fighting ring had been bragging, or so his contacts had said "--so we should probably increase the fee." violence had been selling particularly well as of late, and keeping the law away cost time. as much as marcel disagreed with such blood sports, even he couldn't argue with the money.

Unlike Marcel, Gavin is all for bloodsports.[break][break]

"I've seen it myself." There's still a dark bruise along his jawline from a particularly good punch. It didn't do for the grunts to underestimate him, however; Gavin could give as good as he got. "What would you recommend?"[break][break]

If Marcel answers, however, Gavin doesn't hear the words.[break][break]

The air shimmers above the farmer's fields like a mirage in the desert. It's a strange enough sight that Gavin stops in his tracks, dead grass snapping beneath his boot. The sound that follows is bizarre, unlike anything he's ever heard.[break][break]

A BEEHEEYEM appears over the field, pulling a Dubwool toward it with PSYCHIC energy, and Gavin blinks.[break][break]

"What the fuck."

any further attempts at commenting are cut off by a cry from his sylveon. marcel turns towards his pokemon to find it at eye level, floating above ground. "shit." he grabs his sylveon. "throw up a light screen."

as the LIGHT SCREEN envelopes them, he feels the PYSCHIC pull of the beheeyem weakening.

This had gotten weird, fast.[break][break]

Gavin grasps for the first pokeball he can get his fingers around, forgetting about the Rotom in his phone that might've been better suited to fight off a psychic foe. It turns out to belong to his Omastar, the former fossil appearing on the field immobile.[break][break]

It certainly wouldn't have been his first choice, but he'd adapt.[break][break]

The light screen from Marcel's Sylveon dampens the alien energy rippling across the field, granting Gavin clear enough thought to issue a command of his own: "Soak it!"[break][break]

Assuming the psychic-type is smart enough to anticipate specifically worded attacks, he improvises. Thankfully, Omastar catches on, releasing a powerful HYDRO PUMP that blasts like a cannon from inside its shell.

"copycat," he murmurs low enough for only his sylveon--and perhaps gavin--to hear, "bring it down."

the sylveon's eyes begin to glow as it focuses its attention on the psychic-type. drawing on a power identical to its opponent's, it latches on with PSYCHIC, attempting to draw the wild pokemon towards it. unfortunately for them, the beheeyem's more resistant to the attack than they had been.

"hey," he addresses gavin, "think you could weaken it a bit?"

Marcel thinks quick, sharp, attempts to turn the creature's own power against it. Though it fails, Gavin can see the ingenuity in the plan.[break][break]

To his friend's question, he offers a silent nod, finally remembering the existence of his phone as it buzzes in his pocket. The text message that he'd received goes unanswered. Instead, Gavin calls the Rotom from the device and squares off against Beeheeyem.[break][break]

The ghost-type was created in part by Gavin himself.[break][break]

"Paralyze it, then bring it down."[break][break]

Rotom crackles with energy before a THUNDERWAVE ripples across the field, catching the alien Pokemon in its tracks. It follows up by placing a powerful HEX upon its foe, draining its life force.[break][break]

"Go for it."

[attr="class","marcelThread"]the beheeyem's slow descent quickens significantly with the help of gavin's rotom. after a few moments with HEX in effect, marcel's sylveon is able to slam the beheeyem into the ground using its momentum and gravity against it. the pokemon struggles pathetically.

marcel glances around warily. "think there are any more of them?" he asks as he makes to continue across the field, making it clear he'd rather get a move on before the question's answered for him.

There is calm in the aftermath, Rotom slipping back into the comfort of Gavin's phone as he returns his Omastar and watches the Beeheeyem struggle against Sylveon's grip. Unbeknownst to them, they'd just done an old farmer one hell of a favour.[break][break]

He scans the air above the fields, searching for the telltale shimmering that had betrayed the alien's presence. Seeing none, he shakes his head.[break][break]

"Not now, at least. This summer's been bloody mental. First the heat, now this..."[break][break]

Around a friend as close as Marcel, Gavin doesn't hesitate to let his Galarian roots show.
