Skyler cut off the engine and let the boat drift for a few moments before throwing out the sea anchor. There was only ocean as far as the eye could see, with no islets or sand banks to interrupt the enormous expanse of water around her small boat.

Although being out on the sea usually made her ecstatic, at the moment there was a frown of concentration on her face and she held herself as if waiting for something bad to happen. There was a brief instance in which the image of being sucked into a whirlpool came to the front of her mind, but she quickly veered away from those thoughts.

'I'm never going to be be caught off guard again.' She loved the sea in all its terrible beauty and she'd always accepted its dangers as well as its wonders.

But she'd been careless. And it had nearly cost her deeply.

The blonde looked at the waves and called out Sirena, her Lapras. The Pokémon let out a questioning whistle, her eyes looking ever so slightly worried at Skyler's heavy expression.

"We're going to get ourselves more diving partners," she told the Pokémon, already combing the waves with her eyes.

looping an arm around the lapras' neck, alexander holds on and takes a deep breath, preparing for the dive. it only takes a second for joki to plunge into the water, fully submerging them before diving down. they swim for seconds that stretches to minutes before coming up for air.

"we are almost at two minutes. so close."

peering up from his watch, alexander notices a boat right next to them, along with a trainer and her lapras. he gives them a friendly wave.

"hello! i did not mean to intrude."

Skyler was watching the waves with sharp focus when the water right next to the boat parted ways to reveal another Lapras with a trainer on its back.

The blonde couldn't help the small jump at the sudden arrival, instinct making her take a few steps back and close her hand around a sharp metallic object.

Once she fully realized that she wasn't in any danger, she forced her hand to relax and to let go of the harpoon she kept in her boat, just in case. The waters had been infested with pirates lately, and one could never be too careful.

"Hello," she tentatively replied, giving the curious man atop the Lapras a faint smile. "That's okay, I just wasn't expecting anyone to be here," she looked around, a confused expression taking over her face, "... in the middle of the ocean."

Sirena, however, seemed delighted by the company of the other Lapras, and loudly called out to him. Unfortunately, she didn't have much time to make conversation as Skyler spotted a fish-like Pokémon breaking through the waves. "Sirena, there!" She called out, catching the water type's attention.

An ICE BEAM made its way to the Arrokuda and Skyler didn't waste any time before throwing the Pokéball, afraid the Pokémon would disappear amongst the waves.

[attr="class","stone i"]the harpoon she drops goes unnoticed, as alexander is too focused on the confusion on her face. ah! right. he's in the middle of the ocean, shirtless, boatless, on a lapras. he rubs the back of his neck, chuckling as he explains.

"it is definitely a bit odd, i agree. we were just out training." he looks down at his watch for a moment. "i am trying to improve how long i can hold my breath for. almost two minutes, by the way!"

joki is patient to respond to the other lapras. he waits for the encounter to end before saying hello, dipping his head slightly as he bows. a whiscash passes by, and joki tries his best to impress with a similar ICE BEAM. alexander throws a pokeball at it.

"how about you? what brings you out here?"

The man looked almost bashful as he realized how weird it must seem to appear out of nowhere in the middle of the ocean. Skyler herself was somewhat stunned by the whole situation. What were the chances, really?

Skyler's hesitation thawed out a bit at the guy's mention of being training to hold his breath, shoved to the side by a bubbling enthusiasm.

Eyes bright and the shadow of a smile lingering over her lips, Skyler focused her attention on the man, almost leaning forward. "Two minutes? That's actually pretty good! Have you tried any breathing exercises?"

In the meanwhile, Sirena moved forward to croon playfully at the other Lapras - even while keeping an eye out for wild pokémon.

"Me? I'm looking for water pokémon." The reply was immediate and kind of curt. Skyler didn't want to think too much about the reason that had led her to this moment. The image of a whirlpool flashed briefly in her mind and Skyler couldn't help flinching.

Perhaps in an attempt to change the topic of the conversation, Skyler moved forward and extended her hand in the guy's direction. "Skyler Dross, professional diver - and treasure hunter."

not to mention the added pressure of water resistance when they move through the water. there are just a plethora of additional factors to consider when diving that he wasn't prepared for. but that's okay. it's what training is for, after all.

alexander reaches a hand out, drifting forward with joki. "alexander stone. super lovely to meet you." an unfezant caws in the sky, passing over them without much trouble.

"do you have any tips for holding your breath longer?"

The name doesn't ring a bell in Skyler's head and she shakes Alexander's hand enthusiastically as he drifts closer to the boat. "Nice to meet you, Alexander."

It's a clear and sunny day, and the waters are calm around them, so Skyler decides to sit on the edge of her boat, legs dangling out above the water. She leans forward and rests her elbows on her legs.

"It's easier to start training holding your breath when you're not moving and then go from there." That was how she'd started, some years ago. She continues. "When you're moving you tense your muscles and that uses up more oxygen in your body. The best trick I learned is to relax - your body and your mind. Sounds a bit weird, but there you go."

An overhead caw has Skyler peering up at the sky. The bright blue sky goes on uninterruped save for a couple of clouds- wait. Skyler squints her eyes at a moving shape that she'd taken for a cloud, but really is a... Swablu?

"Sirena, up there," Skyler points up at the sky and the Lapras is quick to direct an ICE BEAM at the bird Pokémon. The sailor already has a pokéball in hand in case the ice beam hits, and will throw it as soon as the pokémon starts to fall.

[attr="class","stone i"]alexander shifts and lowers to sit on joki's shell, careful to avoid blunt knobs. "likewise, skyler." he stretches his legs out, allowing them to graze against the surface of the water. he takes what she says into consideration, humming his thoughts.

"we will have to come up with a more efficient way to dive, i suppose. right now i have to...cling on for dear life." he laughs, gaze drifting up to the swablu right as an ice beam strikes it out of the air. "good hit."

joki watches on curiously, not at all bothered by the commotion. "what's your personal best?"

Skyler looks up to the sky, a pensive expression falling over her face. "I mean, you could always try holding your breath in a swimming pool first. But since you already have some experience in the ocean..." She hums, thinking to herself. "Just try to dive in a safe place without having to hold onto your pokémon. Preferably," she teases, grinning playfully, "not in the middle of the ocean."

This is, Skyler decides as she dips her toe in the ocean, turning out to be quite nice. She should try and strike up conversations with random guys in the middle of the ocean more often.

"My personal best? I haven't done free diving in some time, but it's close to four minutes."

The blonde thinks she sees something bobbing in the water close to them, but doesn't pay it any attention, too focused on the conversation with Alexander.

"Are you training holding your breath for anything in particular?"

he takes her words into consideration, genuinely appreciative of them. it's always nice to get advice from someone with experience. it makes it seem a bit easier and more achievable, in a way. before he can respond, his attention drifts to something breaking out of the water.

the samurott is not hostile, not by any means, but joki sees it as an opportunity to flex and sends an ICE BEAM over its way. the attack finds connection, and before the samurott can react, another ICE BEAM hits it, followed by a pokeball.

"no reason in particular. i figured i might need the ability to hold my breath well in the future, so why not prepare for it now?" he shrugs. "we can never be too prepared nowadays, especially after recent events."
