Fernando’s Charizard doesn’t need another remind to keep their perimeter alive. Bundled up flames erupt from the dragon’s muzzle, licking at the ice wall in an attempt to break through. They have no intention of reaching Lars but eating away at the expansive ice wall gives them breathing room. The added heat also adds some comfort as they endure Shoal Cave’s frigid atmosphere.

“How’s it feel? You might not be able to stop it entirely but you should be able to limit your output.”

MISTY TERRAIN starts to spread out from his jacket as if to demonstrate. It floods out in an abundance at first but it all tapers off when he tightens his fist. “You don’t have to force it out either. The basis of control is to find your natural state of being and slowly putting pressure onto it.”

“It’s still bleeding out,” he called from the other side of the rapidly-forming frozen arc that had him at its center. Sure, the deity wasn’t going to appear right away in front of someone else—not so soon especially after Lars had faced the legendary bird without any hostility.

Quite frankly, he was at the mercy of Articuno’s capricious whims, but the way the deity of ice manifested its power through him was literally bleeding out of him.

Like, there was a way to stopper it, but at the moment he just let the other do what it wanted—and this was the expected result.

“Did you tire out your own… power before bringing it under control, like mine?” he asked through the wall of ice. For some reason there was a pink, seeping fog coming from the direction of the Councilman. If he hazarded a good guess, that was one of the strange ‘aspects’ of the other man’s ‘avatar state’, so to speak.

“By that I mean—did you let it overtake you for a while,” he corrected a few moments afterward as more ice formed in front of the wall, sharp spikes spreading out in all directions. He was still at the center of it all—like there was a considerable radius where he wasn’t directly affected, but…

This was still so confusing to him!

On command, the fire type expels a stream of flames to keep the ice at bay. It’s an uphill battle and not one Fernando can win against a Legendary Avatar. But he doesn’t need to ‘win’. As long as he has a chance to see the extent of Lar’s powers he’ll come out ahead. It’d be nice if the Ranger could learn to control it as well but at the point in time every victory is a small baby step toward success.

“Bend it. Compel it to move to your whim. Make it stray an inch and then push harder.”

Despite his instructions, they aren’t making any progress. At least not anything noticeable from his point of view. But that’s fine. He hadn’t expected as much. Being able to see first hand just how freely Lar’s can summon ice sparks an idea and one he intends to utilize should the situation arise. For now, he’ll have to substitute for Stormy Silph seeing as no one else is qualified to handle a freshly anointed avatar.

“No. I had it and Tapu Fini handled since the beginning. Don’t try to compare yourself to others, Anderson. Every person is different, every Pokemon special. Focus on your own performance.”

An array of icicles trail too close for comfort. Unable to handle them, Fernando’s Charizard is joined by his Pyroar and together they’re able to defend against the unrelenting stream of ice.

“I’m also mentally stronger than you. Focus on your mental.”

Making the frigid coldness that now run through his veins run free wasn’t even hard to do—as it literally bled out of him every single waking moment. Fuck, that very first time he’d woken up the morning after his entire room was coated in a light layer of frost.

Surprisingly it had missed the few electronics he’d kept in the room. Was it some kind of irony that it happened that way?

Or was it something else entirely? Either way—

“Ah, shit,” he muttered, looking up from where he stood and seeing the ice growing thicker. The first burst of flame made him backtrack a little, the second one? Nope, he wasn’t going to have that touch him!

The ice that had almost touched the councilman recoiled a little—even if it was just very slightly—before returning back to its bleeding way of spreading out again.

“I don’t like fire,” he continued; more to himself than to the other. “Get that away from me!”

The ice was shying back slowly, slowly, very slowly…

Fernando has very little insight onto Lar’s psyche. There’s no telling whether or not the comment is meant for himself or Silph. Fernando assumes the latter, considering their situation, and watches as the FLAMETHROWER start to progress as the ice ends half way.

That’s enough distance for them to safely continue as the ice starts to reel back. Neither Pokemon pushes much further, satisfied with the safety net of their personal space. “Do you feel it reclining? Remember that feeling. Feed into it.”

His eyes narrow.

“Control it.”

Reining this in was much harder than it looked. Hell, it was much harder especially when his mind wasn’t exactly in complete control of this shit yet!

The cold energy was still bleeding out, however the equally-hot flames were forcing the ice to recoil backward ever so slightly. Slowly, surely, the ice inched away from the flames. Ice never did get along with fire, after all.

It had something to do with some scientific mumbo-jumbo, something he didn’t think or care to know about at that moment because the heat that was licking at the very edges of the cold ice that he was trying to rein in was starting to get to him, and it was fucking uncomfortable!

“Does your own—does your Legendary communicate with you verbally, or telepathically at least?” he asked a few moments later, remembering something that had been bothering him.

Fernando’s fire Pokemon are able to keep Lars at bay. Once the ice reclines past a certain spot their flames also halt. The objective has always been to establish a zone of safety between them, nothing more, nothing less.

“Tapu Fini speaks to me when it needs to and vice versa.”
