On command, the fire type expels a stream of flames to keep the ice at bay. It’s an uphill battle and not one Fernando can win against a Legendary Avatar. But he doesn’t need to ‘win’. As long as he has a chance to see the extent of Lar’s powers he’ll come out ahead. It’d be nice if the Ranger could learn to control it as well but at the point in time every victory is a small baby step toward success.

“Bend it. Compel it to move to your whim. Make it stray an inch and then push harder.”

Despite his instructions, they aren’t making any progress. At least not anything noticeable from his point of view. But that’s fine. He hadn’t expected as much. Being able to see first hand just how freely Lar’s can summon ice sparks an idea and one he intends to utilize should the situation arise. For now, he’ll have to substitute for Stormy Silph seeing as no one else is qualified to handle a freshly anointed avatar.

“No. I had it and Tapu Fini handled since the beginning. Don’t try to compare yourself to others, Anderson. Every person is different, every Pokemon special. Focus on your own performance.”

An array of icicles trail too close for comfort. Unable to handle them, Fernando’s Charizard is joined by his Pyroar and together they’re able to defend against the unrelenting stream of ice.

“I’m also mentally stronger than you. Focus on your mental.”

Fernando has very little insight onto Lar’s psyche. There’s no telling whether or not the comment is meant for himself or Silph. Fernando assumes the latter, considering their situation, and watches as the FLAMETHROWER start to progress as the ice ends half way.

That’s enough distance for them to safely continue as the ice starts to reel back. Neither Pokemon pushes much further, satisfied with the safety net of their personal space. “Do you feel it reclining? Remember that feeling. Feed into it.”

His eyes narrow.

“Control it.”

Fernando’s fire Pokemon are able to keep Lars at bay. Once the ice reclines past a certain spot their flames also halt. The objective has always been to establish a zone of safety between them, nothing more, nothing less.

“Tapu Fini speaks to me when it needs to and vice versa.”
