After the shocking murder of Telgar's Weyrwoman Delsine of gold Fiazath, and the ensuing imprisonment of the only goldrider remaining "for her own safety," Telgar Weyr at last has a new Weyrwoman, placing the young and passionate Salera and her mutation gold at the head of Telgar Weyr's leadership. They are embarking on a "grand experiment" - flooding the Sands with women to see if women can Impress browns and even bronzes in addition to green, blue, and gold.

Meanwhile, the tiny Ista Weyr slowly withers away, harried by rogue dragonriders. The loss of their most recent gold egg and the revelation that dragonriders are attacking their tithe-ships hangs heavy over the Weyr, and investigations are ongoing, as protection details are dispatched to guard tithe-trains and tithe-ships, stretching the small Weyr to its limits. What will break first?
