Once again, a thunderous roar came barreling up the chasm, thrumming through them briefly.

"—maybe it's the guy making all that racket." He finished dryly, turning his gaze down into the dark depths of the hole below.

"... That's not gonna work, ya know?" He said after a moment, suddenly. "The setting an example thing."

Examples had been aplenty, after all. Good ones, bad ones, mediocre ones, ideal ones.

"Maybe the problem ain't just the folk in the seats." He said, shaking his head and rolling his eyes before reaching for a net ball.

"Should we go further down?"

"'Fraid I can't say." He said, winking at her.

Unfortunately for Andrea, he wasn't distracted enough for that question.

"Patient confidentiality. You understand." Hopefully, because he wasn't all that interested in explaining medical ethics to the young dragon to be.

Still... he cocked his head, looking at Andrea curiously.

"What's gotcha so curious?" He didn't suspect her, but all these questions about avatars could've been seen as suspicious by more unhinged members of the league.

An evening with Yuina Higashi

What had once been a comfortable coolness had turned into a rather chilly cold in the time they had been asleep, what with the AC being left to run unattended for several hours— which only made the sheer warmth radiating from the medic all the more apparent.

And, likewise, the warmth radiating from Yuina herself.

"Hngmm." Thrummed past Doug's lips and into Yuina's neck as the youth hugged her a little more firmly, her warmth pushing away the chill of the AC— and making the bumps and hills of his body a bit more clear to the museum curator.

The soldier part of the doctor's job was a lot easier to feel than it was to see in his conservative uniforms, when one was this close.

And that, too, likely went both ways...

"Hnngh...Hnnn...hm...?" Eventually, the soldier had to realize that his pillow was a little too warm, smelled too nice, and was a little too pleasant to hold to actually be a pillow.

As his eyes fluttered open however, the look he gave the woman did not feel any less vacant.

"Huh..." He uttered, giving her a slow frog blink before smiling dopily. "Oh. This dream again... nice."

He pulled her back into another hug, humming.

May as well indulge.

He froze when the girl reeled back from his hand, eyes growing wide ever so briefly.

The reaction was... familiar, in a sense. Once again, Lucia was reminding him all too much of other kids he knew.

"D'aw, ya don't gotta apologize." He said after a moment, waving his hands before himself. She looked so sad... gods, she looked like she needed a hug. "I shouldn't have surprised ya."

But he knew better now. For now.

So instead... distract!

He made a show of looking around.

"Did'cha know, Lucy? This chasm is actually new. It didn't use to be 'ere." He revealed (he hoped it was a reveal, anyway) to the girl, leaning a bit close as if whispering little known secrets. "A lot of pokemon here are super rare and not found anywhere but Hoenn... but they're also super dangerous. Try to avoid them unless you're with a reaaally strong friend... Like me!"

He knew from experience that telling the kids not to do something just assured that they most definitely would... but telling them they could with a reasonable conditional would at least slow them down.

Speaking of strong, though...

"Well..." He grinned at her, winking as he casually reached into his bag... producing a case.

It opened.

"I already did my gym challenge." He said, winking. "So if ya got any questions, ya know who to ask!"

He grinned.

"Not to brag or anything, but I'm pretty good at buildings teams."

With Eris Halla.

Eris does not respond, which is never good with her, but he doesn't have a time to try and fix things, what with the hectic ass dance he's forced to perform to stay alive.

He simply sits the girl in the cradle of his elbow and shmoves for dear life.

Fortunately, Reiner seemed to catch on to their problem rather quickly— and my, if he didn't possess quite the succinct solution to it.

Between the myriad of rocks and the indisciminate discharge of high voltage, their paradox woes were soon twitching on the floor. Some knocked out, others paralyzed.

Doug really didn't care one way or another—

"Nice going, Reiner, Sandy!" He boomed, throwing up a thumbs up— before hopping over a paradox and sprinting, grabbing Sandy with his other hand on the way out. "Now let's go!"

It was time to go get the fudge out of dodge. The mist was beginning to recede and disappear... but he wasn't sticking around to see if any other paradoxes came.

He only stopped running after several hundred meters of sprinting, when his legs and lungs summarily decided to remind him of his limitations.

It was like that he came to a slow rest against a rocky wall, chest rising with his pants as he gave Eris and Reiner a slow look.

"You... guys okay?" He asked, giving them the Doctor look before grinning. "Hooo... Great job out there, you two. Couldn't have done it without'cha."

His eyes softened somewhat, his hand twitching as he slowly pulled it away from her cute nose.

He had almost cradled her cheek there... Good thing he caught himself before the intrusive thoughts won.

"Haah. But then, what will happen when I'm not?" He wondered, leaning his head to one side briefly before reaching around her to grab her weighty bag, hoisting it over his shoulder.

"Guess I'll just have to stick around ya more often." He said, holding out his hand to her and grinning. "Hope ya won't mind the company, cadet."

RESEARCH STATION

He had been ready to debate on something like this for what felt like forever. Unfortunately, Isaac hadn't given him what he had prepared for.

And he couldn't well argue against something he agreed with.

"... Urgh." He groaned, rubbing his temples while giving the former blonde a withering look, taking in his rather naked body language and feeling bad for even thinking he would give him what he expected.

It was a reminder of how little he actually knew the other. He had seen deeper into the man than any other person in Hoenn, but what did they actually know about each other?

He was probably registered as 'mad unlicensed doctor Eris ocassionally hangs with' in the other's head.

He rose from his seat, sighing.

His expectations had been entirely off base... but then again— it went both ways.

"I get it. Now stop thinking. You're gonna psyque yerself out before we even get out there." He huffed, hands on his hips as he marched up to the man, palming his shoulder. "Still, I feel like I should be offended. I haven't killed a damn thing in the past 40 years; I ain't planning to break my hotstreak on a buncha random grunts."

He turned around and hoisted up his gasoline.

"Let's just say I've got my ways of knowing stuff. Hell— You've met all 18 of them."

Attaching the gasoline to his bag, Doug turned towards the door, humming.

"Still, didn't know you had been in those situations too. We're a lot more alike than you'd think." He mused. "I stopped fearing it after that night, though."

Doug turned his gaze over to the man.

"Tell me, Captain Morales— what does the amnesty program entail?" He asked suddenly, answering a question with another.

"Think we all do." Doug admitted, feeling none of the shame others might.

The fact so many did was an indictment of the league as it stood. It did not generate enough confidence for even its highest ranking members to be fully forthcoming amongst themselves.

"Changes need to happen, and soon." Doug said simply, shaking his head with a sigh.

The line of thought, however, did not last— Thomas suddenly began whispering and cursing to himself.

And though it took him a moment, Doug did recognize what it was.

He reached out to grab the man's shoulder— before shrugging to himself and slapping the man's back. SPIRIT!

"Let's get outta'ere." He said simply, gesturing with his neck to a path leading deeper into the chasm and grinning.

The fear pangs were strong, debilitating, and struck people at random... but they didn't last long, if one didn't linger.

He turned his gaze back to Lyunne, lip curling slightly at her words.

"Take this from a physician— if what used to be painless hurts now. Stop." He said, turning his gaze over to Freya. "Be it walking for someone with a bad knee, or flyin' for a pokemon with a bad wing."

He sighed, scratching at the back of his head... before grinning her way confidently.

"Luckily for ya, this physician's also a magic man." He said, turning back to Lyunne and crouching before him, winking. "Whatever damage's accumulated won't matter once I get started. Lucky you, big guy."

He rose back to his feet again.

"I'm free whenever the league ain't deployin' me, so... when do you wanna do this?"

When the strange cry came, Doug did not even blink.

"I ain't heard nothin'." Doug said simply, not even missing a step.

He had wandered these lonely hills for long enough to have heard those cries a thousand times, and each and every time he had found nothing. Nothing came from paying them any mind... so he didn't.

"Damn, talk 'boutta fall from grace." He said with a grin, thinking about his favorite delivery-person— Locke Jamison.

Okay, fine, he was thinking of angelo vestri too.

"But I guess yer still an active ranger, if yer here?" He said, before folding his hands behind his head. "Well, good on ya, man. Lotta folk would've bounced after that. Glad ya stuck 'round with us despite everythin'."

"What a grouch!" Doug scoffed, lips pursed. "we should teach it a lesson if we see it again."

All Pokemon had a certain level of intelligence— and morality. It should know better than to chase kids... Then again, she was still alive somehow, mercifully.

"Thanks— us doctor's really like patients like ya." He said with a smile, before examining her wound.

No apparent damage; at least, none that could be spotted at a glance. The best course of action would've been to take her back to a hospital for a quick exam...

Or.

"Garo." Doug intoned— before releasing an Orbeetle from a net ball. "Scan her wounds— inside an out."

As the pokemon went to do that, Doug turned his gaze back to Lucia, before reaching over to ruffle her hair.

"I'm peachy, love. I've got the best job in the world." He said, winking. "I saw your rankings, too! Not too shabby at all! You're doing way better than I was at your age."

He leaned his head onto his fist, head cocked as he asked while smiling.

"Ya thinkin' of takin' on the gym challenge, Lucy?"
