He took a step forward, gritting his teeth yet again.

"I ain't fighting cause the league wants me too." He said. "I do it to save lives— even yours. It's that simple."

Allies? Enemies? He didn't care. He was here to be a doctor, not a soldier. Even if nobody thanked him, even if it bit him in the ass— and even if he had to punch out his patients before treatment.

"Yeah... That's a hoennian alright." Doug said with a sigh, dropping his chin atop his palm as he scratched at his cheek.

He seemed more or less used to it— though whether it was his friends professing their intent to help Hoenn no matter what, or promising not to get in trouble, wasn't quite clear.

He gave Yuina a tired, warm smile.

"... Alright." He said simply, shrugging. "No matter what, you're your own person, Yuina. You make your own choices."

He suddenly leaned forward, pointing a finger to her nose with his eyes squinting.

"And I get to tell you I think it's a bad idea." He huffed, poking her nose before reclining back on his seat, throwing a leg over the other as he crossed his arms, huffing. "But if this what you're doing, then I'll help ya."

He had trained plenty of soldiers. Heck, he had even tutored (kinda) Hideo Kino into Gym Leader level. Sure, the kid was a genius already, but he felt confident in taking some credit, so...

"I'm an old hand at Drill sergeant'ing, so..." He winked at Yuina. "Best be ready, Higashi. After this, I'm putting yer ass through bootcamp."

Before it got cold... well, wasn't that a vague deadline.

Still, he grinned.

"I'll make it." He said, holding up his hand to her as Isaac picked her up, his pinkie extended towards her. "Pinkie promise."

He turned his gaze over to Isaac, nodding at him slowly. He was trusting him with her safety.

Given how many times people had failed Eris, he was somewhat apprehensive... but Isaac seemed as close, if not closer than him, to Eris.

He could trust him. Hopefully.

The kick rocked Doug's face, the feeling of the knife biting onto something almost missed as his brain did black flips inside his skull, a tooth flying out of his mouth and landing on the sand.

It didn't last, the young soldier's focus snapping back into place like machinework, his eyes aglow as he threw down the knife towards the other's supporting foot.

"No reasons to disagree?" He said, his voice more impassioned, stumbling forward towards the other on the unsure footing of the sand, taking a swing at his face. "Killing people for nothing? Not a reason? Killing your friends because they can't deal with being rockets anymore? Still not a reason?

He was getting heated, and not just because of the harsh sunlight.

"You'll die either way?! What the fuck does that even mean!" He trying to push the other youth to the sand. "You think you're being cool, talking like you're some kinda sociopath? I know you aren't, asshole!"

He was so done with this man's nonsense. He was gonna get his actual thoughts even if he had to beat them out of him!

"Let me beat some self-preservation in ya, see if I fix your moral compass while at it! Grit YOUR teeth!" Swing!

He froze, eyes slightly wide.

How perceptive.

"... Yeah." He said simply, his gaze moving away from her eyes to hover over her shoulder. "We can't protect the people we love from everything. We can only hope that if something does happen, we can be of help."

He supposed he could've made an attempt to keep Hideo Kino and Eris Halla and others at home, use his influence to limit where they could go and what they could do... for their own safety.

But he couldn't bring himself to be that sort of paternalistic 'guardian'. It didn't align with his... ideals. And well—

"Wanting to protect your loved ones, but also wanting them to not hate you... Honestly. Protecting others in Hoenn is hard, haha." He said with a sigh, scratching at his cheek.

He smiled warmly as Eris reached for the juice box eagerly. Thank god, bribe successful.

Doug swallowed back some thankful prayers.

He rolled his gaze over to Isaac as he spoke next, swallowing down another sigh of relief— he couldn't really afford to leave yet, so if Isaac was willing to escort her home... Two birds, one juice box.

"Nah." Doug said as he rose, patting off the dirt from his knees.

His troops could've used some the fighting force, specially from an avatar and a terror tot; he wasn't about to put friends or others at direct risk for more manpower, though.

"We got it handled over here; Could you see Eris home?" He asked of the blonde, smiling at both. "I'll swing by once things are over. Promise."

With Hideo Kino.

Doug swallowed a sigh, watching Hideo get caught up to speed by his pokemon with a heavy conscience.

He hadn't realized that messing with memories would be such a sticking point for him. Now he knew, at least.

"'Course you can stay, man." He scoffed, ruffling his hair. "I'll be the last guy to kick ya back into a battlefield."

His gaze followed Uxie as it made its exit, wondering what its game was until it was completely out of sight. Was it just trying to help Hideo...?

He turned his gaze over to Hideo, his gaze and brow softening as he spoke.

"... Oran or Leppa Juice?" He asked after a moment, smiling as he reached into his bag before producing a pair of juice boxes.

Eris Halla preferred Leppa. Where did Hideo fall?

SEA

Doug & Kouji Matsubara

Blood tained the sands crimson as Doug caught the slash with his forearm, flinching as it dug into his flesh before pausing at the bone, grinding against it.

"To be fair..." Doug said, his face set in a pained grimace. "You assholes followed me here. Hnghraah!"

With a shout, he shoved back his arm against the other's face, his foot rising in an attempt to front kick him away.

Doug couldn't really compete with Kouji's years of combat training— he had only become a soldier at 16, and knife fighting hadn't been his preferred style anyway.

He could, however, afford to approach it with more confidence and recklessness than any sane, reasonable human being would ever dare.

"And I would rather be in an emergency room, but we're doing this instead." Doug said as he took a guiding stab at Kouji, the blade flying towards the youth's right eye— in hopes he would dodge left and straight into Doug's low, sweeping kick to his ankles.

It was weird, having what sounded like an actual heart to heart with what really was another kid holding a knife. No, that wasn't really right.

They both remembered. They were old men in kids' bodies, if anything.

"But is it a good reason to be here?" He asked the other. "Is an old memory and a history good enough to kill whoever they tell you to, whenever they tell you, whether you agree with the reason or not?"

Whatever the result of his exchange was with Kouji, he didn't press for advantages, pausing simply to stare at the knife in his hand.

"Ya ain't wrong— I know exactly how it ends." He said, before raising the knife. "All the more reason to fight and win."

No more children like him. No more death for the sake of someone's ambitions. He would not suffer it, he would not allow it. Not as long as he drew breath.

The expression on Yuina's face when she saw her Charizard filled him with both warmth and relief. The other medics had called for him before things got out of hand, and he was truly glad for it. He would be sure to forward them gifts once they made it back home.

Grabbing a chair, he dragged it over to Yuina's bedside before dropping down upon it, smiling at her.

"You don't have to." He said. "Just... Do your best to recover. Oh, and try to avoid these messes!"

It didn't matter how many times Eris Halla, Hideo Kino (and now even Isaac Merlo) continued to ignore him, he would chastise and whine until someone listened.

He reclined back on his seat, arms crossed as he winked at Yuina.

"Do at least half of that, we'll call it even. 'Kay?"

His brow creased slightly, worried despite knowing better. She was past the point of danger— just a little disoriented. He didn't need to worry.

... Just in case, though.

"Yeaup, me." He said as poured some water into a cup before approaching yet again, offering it to Yuina. "Drink up."

She had an iv, but still— they could get through the dehydration faster.

He didn't question her on her words– not yet. He did wanna know who was responsible, but her recovery and peace of mind was priority.

"I dunno who 'he' is, but nobody followed ya here." He said, smiling as he turned his gaze over to Yuina's charizard in a nearby cot. "Your charizard must've gone above and beyond to help ya escape."

Luckily for Yuina and Rasza, a magic surgeon man had been staffed at HQ when they rolled up. They would both be fine.

Whoever did this, however, would not.
