Picking Through The End

The song was no funeral dirge, no elegy of loss, no chorus of angels; it was energetic, upbeat. It was unexpected…and yet, can anyone truly say that wouldn't be what's waiting for them when their final moments have come? That it won't be what awaits them at the end?

"You have handled the song well," the Endsinger said. "I was correct to judge you as worthy. I will leave you to your duty, and I wish you good fortune on your search."

With that, the Explorer would feel the connection to the Endsinger cut, its voice gone from their mind. They were free to leave, on to their next point of interest: a region where a distress signal had been sent from some time ago.

Once their ship arrived, they would find the source of the distress signal - or what remained of it.

An entire space fleet, with ships far grander in size than the Explorer's - all drifting lifelessly through cold space, shredded apart from a grand battle. Not far off was a planet, one covered by what was once a grand civilization - but as the Explorer's scans would reveal, not a single living soul was on this planet, nor among the ship graveyard.

There was no-one to communicate with here…but perhaps some information could be gleaned through the wreckage, data logs that could further elucidate what happened here.

Though the Explorer would have to be careful: a ship graveyard could be just as perilous as a living fleet.

"It's fine if Charles is in the room with us. Just, he won't be joining you in the dream itself."

To the rest, Hideo nodded along. "That's a pretty noble goal to have! I imagine you got a lot on your plate, being a princess and an ambassador. The story you chose is a good test of how you behave with power."

They'd soon reach the room, a Pokemon opening the door psychically for them. The room itself was well-furnished, with a nice chair for Hideo to sit upon and a comfy couch for the challenger. A pair of Musharna sat upon both seats, and a number of Psychic and Fairy Pokemon were scattered about, watching Hideo and Elise as they entered.

There was more than enough space for the shard Calyrex to sit, if he so desired. He was also free to wait outside if so desired.

(And wherever the Clayrex waited, the "Ralts" would wait as well).

Hideo went to his own seat, the one with a book resting upon it; there was little in terms of illustrations on the book, the words A Monster In The Woods its most striking feature - apart from the braille lettering one could run their fingers along. He swept it up, taking a seat with the same motion.

The Musharna above him descended onto the armrest of his chair.

"You can take a seat on the couch," Hideo said, the Musharna upon it willing to move as needed. "You'll want to make yourself comfortable, 'cause this'll take some time."

Once Elise was seated, Hideo would begin. "All you'll need to do is close your eyes, and give it a moment. Just focus on my words, and let them do their work."

His Pokemon went to work, the Musharnas letting out some Dream Mist as they would Hypnotize Elise into a peaceful slumber.

"You'll find yourself in the middle of a dark, foreboding forest…"

"Now open your eyes…"

The transition was instantaneous, Elise now standing within a dark forest. The trees covered the sky, and yet an eerie light illuminated the woods, with no clear indication where the light came from.

Hideo's voice could be heard around her, spoken from above, yet clear, as if it were coming from her own head.

A long time ago, when men still fought with blades and bows, there was a forest that few ever dared venture into - and none returned to tell of what they found within.

And so, people made their own answer: there must be something in these woods. Something that tears apart any who enters the woods, something that none have laid eyes upon. Something that, one day, may leave, and spread its hunting grounds.

There's A Monster In The Woods

And yet…one person had chosen to enter these woods, of their own free will. They had entered despite knowing the risks…or perhaps, because of them.

For they were far more capable than the average person.

Elise Calcifet may choose one Pokemon they possess. Elise Calcifet will be able to function as if they were this Pokemon, and is instinctually aware of how to use all its attacks/abilities. They still are human in form, but they may choose to possess minor physical traits (fur, coloration, claws, etc.) appropriate to the chosen Pokemon.

But just who were they - and why had they chosen to enter the woods of their own volition?

The Next Destination?

The cosmos was a grand thing indeed - but perhaps the Explorer's host could shed light on prospective planets.

"Oh, I could think of one you might like!"

Fortunately for the Explorer, he could help them there.

"I remember this one world I visited that looked really nice! It had water and all that other stuff people need to live! And it's big enough for a lotta people to live on! There was a guy there, but he said he was waiting until his time came, so I don't think he's gonna stop you from visiting there or anything."

The Little Prince spoke with enthusiasm, with no heed to the implication of those words.

"It should be a great place for kids to grow up on! I'm sure everyone there can find a rose just like mine. Or like yours."

What that "rose" could be would vary from person to person - but whatever it was, would be important to them.

The Explorer would soon receive a notification from their Spaceship; enough time had passed for it to fully charge; they were free to leave if they wanted.

Even if it'd only felt like they were here for less than an hour.

"Anything else you wanna know? I'm glad to help any other way I can!"

The Frozen Throne

Just as Hideo expected, the Psychic attacked fail to do anything against the Galarian Zigzagoon. It was a mistake the Indeedee only realized after the attack finished - and by then, it was too late for it to correct its mistake.

The Gunk Shot flew towards the Indeedee in a fabulous arc. Snowflakes parted out of its way, providing no (illusory) resistance as it landed straight on the Indeedee's face, exploding in a mess of gunk. The Indeedee went down like a toppled snowman, and just as the two Pokemon before it, its body was covered in ice.

The shattering that followed signaled the end of their battle. "The snow claims its final victim," Hideo said, a smile on his face. "And the throne awaits its Ruler…at least, it would if it were real." The Illusion around them dissipated, bringing them back to reality.

A Royal Audience

The Puffed-out Imposter could do little but solemnly nod at the Lost One's answer. "An acceptable response. One can't always know true thoughts and desires of the one they seek. The true Thunderbringer may prove more ferocious a foe than I."

"Or perhaps, more cooperative. One wouldn't know until the time comes."

Slowly, the Imposter sank into its pile of Puffs. Close observation might clue in that the Imposter was shrinking, and the details on its body became indistinct, blurrier. But it would fully disappear into the Puffs before any major change became apparent.

"Now go on ahead, Lost One. Find your way to the gateway out of this world - and do not look back."

The path to the castle was clear. It would merely be up to the Lost One to follow it.

The castle was a magnificent blue structure, grand in scale and design. It looked as if it were all made of ice, yet it was no cooler or warmer than the outside. The way to the throne room was a simple one, with the inside of the castle more of an imitation of a castle than a real one; close observation would reveal the side rooms as either empty or near-empty, if there were even a space behind the doors.

While they were free to take their time, it would only be a matter of time until they found their way to the throne room. The throne itself looked as cold as the rest of the castle, in spite of the flowers adorning the room.

And sitting atop that icy throne was a familiar figure: the one the Lost One had met when they first entered the forest.

Yet, she looked different now: she bore a mixture of exhaustion and scorn, slouching on her throne as she glared at the Lost One and their Fairy.

It was just the three of them in this room now - and a low hum that reverberated through the room, coming from behind the throne.

"The Fae Kingdom is a strange place, is it not?" she asked, the frustration in her voice clear. "Filled with strange creatures, fulfilling the strange purposes they were given, and content with just that, with no other care in the world. It's what I thought when I first found myself trapped in this world - and I still do."

"Tell me: what do you think of this kingdom? Is it not the kind of place you would want to leave, with whatever opportunity presents to you?"

Welcome

Hideo was used to having high-profile challengers; Gym Leaders, ex-Elite Four members, even the Champion. The Galarian Ambassador was a whole other tier in his mind, so he would make sure to do his best.

(Which wasn't to say he didn't try for his other challengers).

He was quick to go meet her once his Pokemon informed him of her arrival. Quite a few of his Pokemon notified him; a lot of the ones staffing the Gym took a chance to take a look at the Pokemon accompanying her, for even a shard of Calyrex was an impressive sight.

But today wasn't about admiring Legendary Pokemon - she was here to do his non-traditional challenge, and he'd treat her like any other challenger.

"Thank you for coming, Ms. Calcifet," he said, raising a hand to greet her. The "Ralts" on his shoulder helped guide him to her, though its attention seemed squarely on the Shard Calyrex. "I've already got the room set up for your non-traditional challenge. I'll lead you to the room, if you'll follow me. Your Pokemon there can join us too, though uh, he's not exactly gonna be joining you in there."

With that said, Hideo would lead her towards the challenge room - though it wouldn't be a quiet walk. "So I like to ask all my challengers this: what made you decide to go with There's A Monster In The Woods for today's challenge?"

The "Ralts" on his shoulder wasn't doing its job, still focused on the Calyrex shard. Hideo's other Pokemon picked up the slack, seamlessly keep him oriented so he didn't veer off track.

Hideo hadn't asked for help - but he wouldn't refuse it being given to him freely.

The first voice, Lucia Aldrete 's, he didn't recognize. Even up close, where it was easier to hear past the mask, he didn't know who it was, though she sounded young - younger than him. "Thanks," Hideo said, just as he heard Genevieve Cromwell 's voice speaking to him, encouraging to keep a cool head. "Don't worry; I'm used to this kinda stuff."

He just stuck with his work, even when it sounded like the Okidogi beat someone (Shred Zeppelin ) to near-death. He kept working until he was told the job was done.

And then he found out what would become of people trying to smuggle shards. He didn't know if it was simply them getting caught from unsubtlety, or the guards here had some supernatural sense, but he'd made the right call holding off.

It was the consequence of being caught that really sent a chill down Hideo's spine; he could recognize the sound of a Pokeball being smashed (thanks, Melmetal), but that meaty bit added to it told him what his eyes couldn't; those were people's Pokemon getting smashed.

Each *crunch* had Hideo grip his shoulder tighter. Had the consequence for disobedience merely been getting hurt, then he'd take a risk at some point. But with his Pokemons' lives on the line?

He couldn't risk their lives. He wouldn't let himself be responsible for any more of their deaths.

He'd play these games for now, until he could get his team back. Then free as many people and Pokemon as he could.

Then he'd burn this place down.

Presented with their next choice, Hideo could immediately recognize what they were dealing with. It was something to get his mind off the potential deaths of his Pokemon. "The Prisoner's Dilemma," he said. "I…know about this one. Best outcome is if we both choose to Trust. The consequences for Forsaking are so much worse."

Both Forsaking would be a far worse punishment, and one side Forsaking while the other Trusted sounded like a slightly less worse punishment for the Trusting side. The punishment for double-Trust was explicitly survivable; no-one had to die.

And he would not let himself be responsible for more deaths. "I'm saying Trust."

Though it sounded like the girl that helped him earlier wasn't taking the choice very well. He walked over to her, following the sound of her crying, and reaching out to put a hand on her shoulder. "We gotta stay strong for them," he told her. "We'll get them free. We just need to get through this, alright?"

The Endsinger quietly listened as the Explorer shared their tale, of a civilization once grand, destroyed by losing what helped them grow.

"Such loss can be difficult to recover from. It truly does sound as if their civilization has ended, even if small vestiges remain, surviving for what they see as nothing."

"And yet, the end of one story, means that another can begin. They may never regain the life they once had, but a new civilization can begin anew from the ashes."

The Endsinger took a deep breath.

Its voice would only sound in the Explorer's head.

Forever Responsible For Your Rose

The Little Prince nodded along as the Explorer shared their "Rose".

"That was the ship you were near when I found you, right?" the Little Prince asked. "It did look pretty nice! I don't need something like that to travel across the stars, but it'd be nice to fly around in a house."

"I'm glad to hear I'm not the only one to have something like a rose! Even if what you got isn't exactly a rose." A spaceship certainly did more than a rose could, and needed more care than a rose. "I've seen other ships before. Some bigger, some smaller, some grander, some simpler. But what's important is that that ship is yours. Just like how this rose is mine."

The Little Prince looked over at his rose.

"And it's the time we spend on our rose that makes it so important. The time we spend caring for it, looking at it, being with it. It's the time we waste on it that makes it different from everything else just like it."

Perhaps the rose would not last long - but it was something important to him. Even if that time ended with nothing, the time he spent was important.

"And we're forever responsible for our rose."

The Little Prince looked back to the Explorer, who'd asked him a peculiar question.

"Oh, you're looking for a planet? There's lots of planets out there that I've been to! Was there a certain kind of planet you were looking for?"

What You Gonna Do?

The expression on the creature's unnatural face never changed, an empty smile on its face.

"Apology is unnecessary," it said. "Your reaction was no different than the ones that rest over there. If anything, that you haven't already attacked me speaks well, and that I needn't put you to sleep as I did with them."

It tilted its head as the Inquisitor questioned them.

"An assailant…I cannot say I've seen an assailant pass by here. But there has been a child that passed through here some time ago. It seemed scared and tired, so I pointed it towards a place where it could find shelter. I believe I felt the faint energy of psychic power around it, and it could find help at that shelter."

There was a complete lack of concern in its voice, its tone as unchanging as its face.

"The ones that rest here now, said they were hunting down a monster. They asked the same questions you have, and they bore weapons just as you do."

The creature bent towards the Inquisitor, its face growing close.

"What do you intend to do with this 'assailant', if you find it?"

"Dunno. Only did this one once before, and we fixed it."

Rather, Eris Halla fixed it, with a little help from Uxie. Hideo had just sat around chatting with her as she worked. He didn't know nearly enough about technology to fix that kind of stuff.

And maybe destroying the device would have a much different outcome.

Though no outcome would get him out of the questioning he faced now.

"I…the League didn't fail me. I just, I didn't know what would happen if word got out that I had Uxie…if it got leaked to some group like Rocket."

Which wasn't a lie; that was the implication he got from John Sullivan 's warning. And Alexei Ivanov already brought up one traitor during the reveal. Heck, it didn't even take a traitor to say the wrong thing to the wrong person.

"I wasn't in a great spot if word reached the wrong people. I was traveling the region on my own for a while, when Uxie first joined me."

"And I didn't know if the League itself would've forced me to join up with AQUA if they knew I had Uxie sooner, or if I did it before I was a Gym Leader."

Taking a moment to catch his breath (as best he could), Hideo listened to his cellmate's explanations. "Right, the cannibals." He'd heard enough stories about them eating people to know the ones that invaded Hoenn were not to be trusted. "I heard Rocket is working with them, so this could be a Rocket thing too."

And he could still remember that weird vision in RKS of him being captured and interrogated by Rocket…though this situation didn't really feel all that similar.

He took in a deep breath - a bit of clarity reaching his mind. "You're right. We gotta know what we're dealing with first before we try anything."

And they were just about to receive a lesson; what he could only assume was their captor walked out from an elevator, the Megalopolans guarding them serving as its mouthpiece. "...we're the weakling ward?" Hideo muttered, his quiet words dripping with disgust.

He wasn't weak. He knew he wasn't weak.

Hideo took notice to the metal tray clanked in front of him, and he was hesitant to find out what was on that tray - and it sounded like someone else was as well.

And while Hideo couldn't see the consequences of open defiance, he could hear every sickening crack, every devastating crunch it would bring.

Reluctantly, he dug into his plate, the mochi being surprisingly tasty - and it allayed the hunger he'd been suppressing in his frantic search. What other option did he have?

Just work, do as he's told, and find a way out. Play the part of an ideal prisoner while he looked for whatever openings he could, just nod when they talk down to him and call him weak.

It's a life he's lived before.

(Though home life hadn't carried the risk of getting beaten to death for disobedience)

Hideo didn't fully realize what the chain around his neck attaching to the cell bars meant until he reached out to them, realizing the bars were gone - or rather, they were now part of the chain. He tugged on the chain, assessing how far the leash went. A good distance, but probably nowhere near far enough to escape this place.

As if he even knew the way out - or what was awaiting them outside of here.

Mochi properly masticated, Hideo made his way out, taking in as many full-breaths as he could before the mask once more covered his mouth. He didn't know what awaited him in the middle, but he could hear the other prisoners heading towards there. He tried to listen for any other voices, but between how many voices there were and the quality of their voices (thanks, masks), he couldn't tell if there was anyone else he knew here.

He could only hope someone would recognize him by chance, and tell him who they were.

Soon, their job was presented: break crystals.

Straightforward…if they were given any tools to work with. But Hideo already had an idea; he'd probe around for any rocks that he could pick up, grabbing one and using it to smash the larger rocks.

The next part, actually collecting the shards afterwards…that was the harder part. Hideo had to carefully probe around with his hands, trying to find every bit he broke off - but careful enough to not pierce his hands on a stray piece.

And just as he collected a handful of shards, a large, furry hand came from below, smacking his hands up, sending his collected shards everywhere. He could hear the dog laughing as he covered his head, trying to protect himself from the falling shards - and any other attacks the dog would make.

Fortunately, he got out with just a few scrapes on his hand, the dog walking off to antagonize someone else - someone it sounded like got a punch to the chest.

Quietly, Hideo once more searched for the shards. He didn't want to ask for help - doing so would make him look weak, and he had a feeling the dog would be the first one to answer his pleas.

The thought crossed his mind to try and smuggle some shards in his mouth to use later - but first, he needed to see if they'd be searched or inspected after their work.

Uxie gave Hideo a quick rundown on Eris's condition; she wasn't badly hurt physically - though Hideo could tell physical harm wasn't the problem here.

He knelt down beside her, reaching out to hug her close. To offer her some amount of comfort in a conflict neither could do much about.

But those heavy footsteps reminded him only one of the dragons had been felled. Uxie floated close to Hideo, its closed gaze on Reshiram.

"Had there been any other path, we would have taken it," the Reshiram said, its wings spreading wide. "I leave his remains in your care; they hardly belong with a kinslayer such as I."

With that, the Reshiram took the skies, leaving naught but a black stone for the two.

The Little Rose

The Little Prince eagerly nodded as the Explorer questioned if this was his home, then tilted his head when they spoke their disappointment. "It may not have much, but it's my home. I wouldn't say it sucks."

"And I speak just like anyone else speaks!" There would be no elaboration beyond that.

He led the Explorer to his home. The path there was sparse, only a few plants dotting the surface. The Explorer's Spaceship's assessment had been accurate, with no other being on this planet but the two of them.

And soon, they'd reached the destination.

It was a modest house, with a table sitting outside. A pair of chairs sat around the table, and upon the table itself sat a clay pot. And in that pot, sat a single, red rose.

"Here we are!" the Little Prince exclaimed, approaching the rose. "This here's a rose that I dug up a while ago. I thought it was pretty, and I've been caring for it since."

"It's not the only rose in the universe. It's not even the only rose on this world. But this rose is special to me, 'cause it's my rose."

The Little Prince looked over to the Explorer, curiosity glinting in his eyes.

"Do you have something like that? Like my rose? Someone that's common, but special to you?"

The first time his cellmate spoke, Hideo attributed it to just background noise, someone from a different cell saying something indistinct. He continued his search, moving around anything he could, trying to feel out for any Pokeballs.

It was only when he heard the voice again that he realized it was coming from behind him. It took a moment for him to process he wasn't alone here, coming from a voice he didn't recognize. Even when it gave him a name, he didn't know who it was - he didn't know many Rangers.

"Hideo Kino, Littleroot Gym Leader." His words were quick, strained; it wasn't easy to breathe in this mask, and he was pushing himself searching every nook and cranny of this cell. He'd even check the same spots he'd checked before, in case what he was looking for suddenly popped in like he was looking through a refrigerator.

It'd take a few moments before he'd go another route.

"Hey, you see any Pokeballs in here? Or any Pokemon?" Maybe someone with functioning eyes would have a better chance at finding something in this place.

Maybe he could even get some context here.

"And you got any idea where we are?"
