This place made his skin crawl, but he hid it behind a stone wall: so many soldiers and military. If Killian weren't sure the League had nothing on him, he'd cancel the challenge almost immediately.

His opponent, John, introduced himself and cleared the battlefield. Given Killian's research and all the bug-types he saw on the way here, he's expecting to face one. It's why he's chosen Haxrous over one of his many Psychic-type Pokemon. When the Dragonite descends from the sky, he's more than a little surprised.

Tongue rubbing against the back of his teeth, the admin smiled and nodded for Alduin to step forward. "How polite, I've got a feeling we'll need it." The first move was significant, and Killian opted for an aggressive one.

Two sharp whistles pierced the air in rapid succession. Haxrous narrowed his eyes, ebony scales shuddering in anticipation before it charged. Deep navy blue energy erupted around his claws. He lept, body spinning like a corkscrew that whipped the energy around him in immaculate fashion.

Headed down at an angle, Dragon Claw attempted to pierce Dragonite between the wings and pin it to the ground.

"Noted." he replied with a nod. "I'll keep those companies in mind." stepping away from the bag, Killian stretched his arms.

"Welp - that's it for me today. I've got another meeting to run off to. Thanks for the tips, Theo." the admin spun on his heels and headed for the door.

"Maybe I'll stop by and view all those fish sometime soon."

Time to make some phone calls.

"Well, yeah. Didn't I just say you were going in the same direction as me? Honestly," Killian shrugged his shoulders and sighed, "if I meant you harm, I'd have done something before you noticed me." The temptation to do so was strong at the time.

"Razz, gotcha - I've got it memorized." an awkward chuckle fluttered free from Killian's lungs. His hand slipped into his pocket as he laughed, disturbing the rest of the Espeon on his shoulder. She mewed and lifted an eyelid to shoot him a glare but went back to her nap afterward.

"But say, now that I'm out in the open and everything, mind helping me look for that Pokemon?" stupid, Killian should be heading in the opposite direction right now. But the need to know what Razz was up to kept him rooted in place.

"It's called Hatterene. Heard of it? They give off powerful headaches to stop people from getting close."

"A favor." Killian answered with a smile. "To be redeemed later. That work for you?"

"I wasn't picturing a jungle exactly, but if that's what you wanted to do." he shrugged at the second half of her question. "It can be. But I doubt you're doing anything wild at home on your own."

His sister had lived a relatively sheltered life, it seemed. Whether by choice or circumstance, Killian can't say for sure, but it affected her.

The answer to his question isn't what he'd expected, but it's not all that shocking. "I used to be like." the comforting words are followed by a reassuring look. "Love was never something I thought I'd have after my mother passed." from pleasant conversation to painful memories. Killian's once bright smile flattened to a calm line.

In an act of trust given only to Lex, Killian offered Lis a piece of his heart. A sliver of the wounded man underneath layers of apathy. "I was sure I'd be loveless forever." and his smile returned, smaller than before, but no less as brotherly.

"Turns out, I was just waiting on the right person to melt the ice." Killian's quick to add, "But even if you can't, or there isn't someone like that out there for you. There's nothing wrong with being alone."

"There's strength to be had in that too."

Explore the world - leave Hoenn and never look back. Killian doubted he'd be able to convince her to do that. Fuck, he couldn't even get himself to go.

Killian can't help but perk up at the mention of Alexandra Briarwood. An involuntary smile tugged at the corner of his lips. "Love is too simple a word." like the shallow end of a pool, it barely encompassed how deeply he felt for her.

"Lex is amazing. She's witty with the perfect amount of sass. Not afraid to tell me when I'm in over my head or put me in check. A real firecracker. Always there for me when I need her to be, whether I like it or not. "

The breath in his lungs, the wind beneath his wings - his north star. She's all that and so much more.

There's a pause as his eyes drift to the ceiling.

"And she's strong, more than I think she realizes." You didn't endure the things that Lex had and not come out the other end stronger for it. "I wished she'd see that." still smiling, he looked down to meet Lis's eye.

"What about you, Lis? Ever been in love before?"

There's no way Mars can know about his dealing with Fernando. Killian knows this, but the nagging voice of paranoia still blew its nasty breath into his ear.

"Kill him."

What a horrid thought from a phantom only FERNANDO SILPH can seal.

"They all are." he replied dryly. But the one he wanted could top them all. Deoxys. Just thinking its name sent static down the admin's spine. His fingers tightened around the glass of whiskey. Like the creature he's hunting, diamond blues drift off into space.

"Lucky? That's a fucking understatement. Between Kyogre and our mystery space bender, it's a miracle that everyone made it out of alive."

Killian sighed.

"Do you believe in fate, Mars?"

Killian distanced himself from the stoneless plot of land. Wet grass crunched underfoot, and he exhaled. A wispy trail of breath visible in the air left his lips.

He'd shared a lot today. Killian whispered the stories of his life to the aether. Whether or not they reach his mother, he's not sure, but on the off chance they will, he speaks them. She'd always liked to hear him talk of his day. If Arceus were kind, the deity would allow her to listen.

"I've got to go."

Silent, he turned and lowered his head. "I'll see you next year." Killian headed back down the cracked cobblestone road. Hesitating to leave only for a moment as he reached the iron gate, he looked over his shoulder and frowned.

"Maybe."

And then he stepped out into the mist.
