Casso-Casso tutted beside them. Their Smeargle had insisted on going inside the museum, despite the steep price of entry, and sneaking in amidst the midday crowd had been troublesome. Now, however, the spotted dog just seemed embarrassed to be around their plebian trainer.

If only he’d fallen into the hands of a higher-minded individual. Artists are truly born to suffer…

Locke suddenly tugged Casso-Casso into his lap, oblivious to his Pokémon’s soulful musings. He brought the museum’s brochure close to his face, hiding from the small group of employees that had appeared from behind a closed-off area nearby.

“everyone's going up front to see the curator.”


“really? i heard she's a total babe.”


“i heard she left ever since the league lost her shipment last year.”


He lowered the pamphlet only after the chattering voices had completely faded away, chancing a quick glance over his shoulder to make sure the group was truly gone before turning to stare back at the collection of velvet ropes and paper barriers they’d come from.

Locke inspected his newest treasure against the midday sun.

It didn’t look like much; a bright, golden seed only a little bigger than a grain of rice. One of his clients however, an older florist in Oldale, had gleefully informed him of its rarity. He’d briefly considered selling it, but quickly decided that wouldn’t really be keeping in line with the flower’s meaning:

So planting it had seemed the next best option. While there were plenty of community gardens to choose from, they settled instead for the privacy of a small clearing along Route 117. Doro-Doro huffed beneath them, informing Locke in her own language that it was still much too cold for taste.

”Sorry buddy, but I need your help for…” Their reassuring words drifted at the end.

”Th-Thank you!” While their opponent wasn’t down yet, ’s interference at least gave Locke time to get out of the ranger’s way and join the other civilians. Though not before giving him one last bit of aid.

They scrambled to their feet and returned De-De to the safety of her Pokéball, pulling out a new capsule to replace the ice-type with something a little more helpful to the other man. ”Nim-Nim!” They called out to their Castform before the red light had even faded away. ”Rain Dance! On the double!”

The cloud Pokémon’s form shifted as he complied, suddenly taking on the appearance of a small water droplet while dark storm clouds rolled in overhead. There, Locke thought as the first drops of rain began to fall, that ought to slow things down a little. Satisfied in having done what little he could, he whistled for his Pokémon to join him as he turned tail and bolted towards where the rest of the townsfolk were being gathered.

Or, that was his plan, until he spotted a familiar mask fleeing the scene.

"He's the one responsible! I saw him start it!"


Locke froze, one hand instinctively reaching for his side. He glanced around nervously. Nobody seemed to be following the man yet. Should he…? Too late, his feet were already shifting direction, moving quickly to catch up to masked man, stomach churning as the town’s cemetery came into view.

What exactly he’d do when he got there, was a problem for future Locke apparently.

- Thanks for saving him.
- Decides they'd only be in the way if they tried to battle, but still summons their Castform to set up a Rain Dance (1/5) over the town before they run away to join the other civilians.
- He stops when he recognizes 's mask a little ways away, though, and-hearing that he's the one behind the fire-changes direction to follow him to the graveyard.

Locke was pretty sure was allergic to silence, but decided against voicing that opinion to a stranger.

Not that he had any time to, as the clock chose that moment to announce the end of their date. ”Oh, I’m sorry! We hardly even talked about you,” he said with genuine disappointment. It definitely wasn’t like him to monopolize a conversation like that. He must’ve seemed like such a chatterbox!

”Here, I’ll give you my number! I, uh, might actually have some questions of my own to ask you later…” They were feeling a bit bad using as their legendary encyclopedia all the time anyway.

”I’ve seen ‘em! Watched Lugia and Yvetal duke it out over a tree like the one in Sootopolis, but smaller. Saw Kyogre straight up eat a woman-she turned out fine, got married ‘n stuff.” Locke listed just a few of his recent encounters in the region, keeping track on his fingers as he talked. ”I hitched a ride on Virizion once.”

He decided to leave out his more…personal encounters with Shinnoh’s Lake Trio, and was all too happy to return to his little adventure in the Tree of Life.

”I actually did it in the middle of the day, believe it or not. Just Teleported right past the entrance with my Natu,” he said with a self-satisfied grin. It’d been nerve-wracking in the moment, but pulling one over on Rocket like that felt good, even months later.

They shook their head as they retreated back to their seat. “But like I said, it was pretty soon after it showed up, so there were lots of folks crowding around and not enough guards to keep an eye on everybody.” Especially not on random mailmen poking their noses where they shouldn’t. ”Nowadays there’s guards all over the place, and they’ve got a whole rotation worked out ‘n everything, so I wouldn’t recommend it now.”

Locke titled their head back as they thought of , however. ”I did run into a friend of mine in there, though. I don’t actually know how he got in, come to think of it.”
