The panicked call came just as Locke narrowly avoided another wave of fire from the wild Blaziken. It bounced from foot to foot, making its next Blaze Kick all the harder to predict. De-De leapt up to meet it, Countering the blow with a swing of her tail and sending the fire-type stumbling back even as she frantically patted out the flames that sprouted on contact.

Of course a quick overnight delivery like this would turn deadly. It was just that kind of month.

It was always that kind of month in Hoenn.

The Blaziken regained its stance soon enough, but De-De didn’t give it a chance to strike first. The Delibird took in a deep breath and released it as a cloud of ice-cold air towards her opponent. It was unfazed, however, cutting through the Freeze-Dry with another Blaze Kick and knocking the penguin back into her trainer’s arms, sending them both tumbling to the ground as the other Pokémon slowly approached.

Oh god it just had to the one they couldn’t pronounce.

”Well alright, maybe let’s start with these Pokémon called the Lake Trio? I dunno what lake they’re from, somewhere in Sinnoh I think? But they’re here now for some reason, handing out these,” another wave of his charm. ”To seemingly random people? I got mine after seeing the yellow one with the helmet head. And then it made me forget all about it.

Um, what else…My friend Eris got here’s from Mesprit-it’s pink like yours-and it made it so she couldn’t talk about her charm either. Del Mar didn’t have a charm, or at least, he didn’t show me or Eris one. Oh!” He snapped his fingers with the revelation. ”But Eris did say something about Azelf giving out words instead, so she probably knows more about it than me.”

Then Locke became visibly crestfallen. ”Though, it’s not like we’re gonna be able to ask her, once this conversation’s done…”

With all of the cargo loaded, it was time to move out, though Locke struggled to pick out the dive leader amidst the collection of masked faces.

”Er-I think that’s all the stuff, if we’re all ready,” they ended up saying to the closest person, who was already floating in the water just below the dock with his Pokémon. Even half-submerged and fully decked-out in scuba gear, he had a young build about him similar to their own, and Locke felt a bit of relief that they weren’t the only greenhorn present as they slipped into the ocean next to one of Mer-Mer’s massive fins.

It suddenly struck Locke that there was something noticeably missing from this scene.

”Eris,” he started as he gently pulled them apart, though, ever-seeking physical contact these days, still keeping one hand on her arm. ”Did nobody come up here with you?”

Maybe she’d wanted to be alone. Maybe she hadn’t wanted to explain the situation to whoever was taking care of her (an image flashed in Locke’s mind; a petite, dark-haired man carrying a bruised and battered girl on his back, deep below the earth). They hadn’t told their family, after all, about any of the countless terrifying scenarios they’d been forced through as of late. Even though, contradictorily, they would’ve given anything for their mother’s hand in theirs right now.

Locke couldn’t imagine Eris not wanting the same.

He needed it out.

Locke reached for his head to do just that. To claw his way inside and rip the pain from behind his eyes. But something-someone-had reached him first, wiping the blood (Oh. He’s bleeding.) from his face and leaving him to paw uselessly at the foreign hand between him and the thing inside his brain.

Relief would them anyway, as a new layer of dampness replaced the old; a cool relief from the warmth of their own blood. For a moment, they mistook the Life Dew from rain, until enough of the spots faded from their vision to let them see the Lapras behind.

It looked like La-La. That’s nice. Maybe they’ll go fishing later.

Locke was conscious enough now to flinch at the Hatterene, a species they typically avoided, but the tension eased away as the witch’s Healing Pulse helped them find their breath again.

”This region…is going to kill me…”

Eris Halla ’s speculation about a charm in Fortree triggered another memory in Locke. ”Oh, that’s where I met the red-haired guy! Sénon!”

Say less, non-fat. God he was gonna remember that every time now wasn’t he?

”He had a charm like yours, and I saw a ‘T’ on it too.” He frowned, trying to recall the rest of his and Sénon Game ’s conversation. ”But he said he saw an ‘I’ on his, and ‘G’ on mine.”

Ugh, all these letters were making his head spin.

But leave it to priam conrad to set things straight again. ”That’s a good point!” Locke agreed. ”The world can’t end twice, right?”

Locke opened their mouth to ask, but all that came out was a chocked gasp as the pop-pop-popping crescendoed in their ears.

We’ll deliver any package through rain, sleet, or wormhole!

That stupid stupid tagline.

”Gogogogogo-” Locke urged Shika-Shika through the woods, his frantic order ending in a screech as they avoided yet another explosion of lightning. It was nearly impossible to see in the unnatural darkness hanging over them, leaving him to rely on his Stantler to guide through whatever fresh hell had descended on Hoenn today.

Three more Pokémon suddenly appeared in their path; a Rhydon, a Steelix, and what looked like some kind of orange Decidueye. The trio immediately turned in their direction with clear malice in their eyes. Though Locke tried to steer Shika-Shika to the side, the Stantler ignored him, charging at the other Pokémon head-on.

And then Shika-Shika began to change.

His fur turned white and grew out rapidly, and his antlers nearly doubled in size. Psychic energy hummed around the new Pokémon, forming a shield around the pair as they bashed through the line of aggressors. In record time, both trainer and mount tore through the forest and out the other side, dirty and covered head-to-toe in foliage, but unharmed.

Well, physically, at least.

Locke watched angelo vestri and skyler dross fly off with a mix of exasperation and mild jealousy, the itch to explore the impossible jungle below almost managing to overcome his lingering anxiety. Eris Halla seemed to be settling down somewhat, if at least on a surface-level. Still, it wouldn’t do to abandon her after a scare like that, so he kept himself firmly planted next to the girl while his Eevee tried and failed to hurry the break along.

The sound of crumbling stone nearby made Locke flinch, but when they turned towards the source all they could see was an empty space where several members of their party had been and…bubbles? ”H-Hey! Don’t get too close!” The cry was mainly directed towards Hideo Kino as the boy approached, but it might as well have been a general warning to the small group of gawkers beginning to huddle around the hole.

Locke was feeling a little more relaxed after the success of the first date of the night.

He took the small window of time between partners to accept one of the glasses of water being passed around, taking small sips between quick glances at his phone to make sure Toshiaki Macallan’s number was actually there.

It was only a short time after that Koro-Koro bumped into the side of their head, forcing his trainer’s attention to the person approaching the other chair. This new date looked significantly more intimidating than the last, and about as far from Locke’s usual type as it got.

”O-oh! Hello! I’m Locke,” they greeted with an outstretched palm. Then, aware of the time limit and remembering how quickly their last partner had broken the ice, they asked, ”Um, so, what do you do for a living?”

So this section really was made up entirely of shiny Pokémon! And this one was so cute. He was pretty sure his grandparents had sent him pictures of something like this from Alola. What was it called? Stuffing?

They pulled out their Rotom phone, lining up the camera to take a few photos of their own. Through the lens they watched the little cub turn towards them with a curious look, teeter onto its hind legs-

And charge.

Locke fell back with a yelp, dropping their phone to the ground in their panicked attempt to get away. The device crackled and sparked where it lay, Roto-Roto’s face appearing on the screen briefly to give their trainer a look of open disgust. Then, just as the wild bear was about to pass over it, the phone exploded with electrical Discharge until the cub was left twitching in the grass, thoroughly knocked out.

They still tossed a Pokéball at it though. Just in case.

The alarm cut through the conversation as they started to ask more about the other man’s track and field days. Their partner didn’t seem to mind, however, which might’ve discouraged Locke any other day.

Except Toshiaki was holding out his phone with his number freely displayed in front of them, promising what very much sounded like a future date.

Koro-Koro gaped with delight somewhere above their head.

Locke fumbled to retrieve his own phone, just this once a little grateful he no longer had his outdated Pokénav to embarrass him. He punched in the digits with a little more force than necessary, making the Rotom inside buzz with irritation until he was finished.

”S-See ya,” he echoed as Toshiaki departed for the next table, somehow feeling like he’d just run a marathon himself despite having done nothing but sit for the past...god, five minutes?!

…Yeah, this was definitely a bad idea.
